Welcome to TV Squad Lists, a feature where each blogger has a chance to list his or her own rundown of things in television that stand out from the rest, both good and bad.
Everywhere I go, young people ask me the same question, "How did you finish that whole sandwich in one sitting?" Then, when we're all done laughing, they ask me how they can become a TV expert like myself. So, as a favor to you aspiring Dukes and Duchesses, here are ten things you need to be a TV Geek.
1. At least one TV over 40 inches
Not all homes are built to accommodate a flat screen or a rear projection TV, if this is the situation in your house ... move.
2. At least one TiVo or Replay TV
I prefer the TiVo and now anyone can get a TiVo absolutely free, so if you don't have one, we're not friends. Nothing personal.
3. At least two VCR's
Even though Digital recorders have changed the way we watch TV, sometimes you need to share your favorites; that's what videotape is for.
4. A videotape filled with episodes of a show that only you enjoy
For me, it's Bosom Buddies. Six hours of Bosom Buddies.
5. A recliner
I don't care if it vibrates, rocks, swivels, or dispenses beer, if it can't hold a decent butt groove, it's worthless.
6. A TV small enough to take anywhere
I have a ten-inch that fits perfectly in the front seat of my car and plugs into my cigarette lighter.
7. 'Total Television' by Alex McNeil
Although, in serious need of an update, this is the best reference guide for television ever written.
8. Digital cable or a satellite.
It really comes down to personal preference, the main thing is that you get every channel possible, whether you watch them or not.
9. Two or more biographies by TV personalities that shouldn't have been written
Among others, I own David Cassidy's, 'C'mon Get Happy' and Adam West's, 'Back to the Batcave' and I've read them both.
10. 'Television's Greatest Hits' CDs by Tee Vee Toons
This seven CD set includes some of the best and worst TV theme songs ever written. There is nothing like driving in your car listening to the theme from Mannix.

I can't get a TiVo for free because I don't live "over there" :-)
Also I don't think you need a VCR anymore because anyone can buy a DVD-Player for 20 bucks at any given electronics store. Everyone should have one by now, really.
But I have two VCRs and two PVRs I have to admit :-) And 2 DVD Players. And a 42" Plasma :-)
Unfortunately I don't watch german TV anymore for it bores me to death and everything is dubbed US-TV anyways so I chose to go directly to the source and hooked up a PC to my TV so I can watch everything from there.

Where do they give away frr Tivos?!
And you aren't a TV geek. Real TV geeks have a DVD Recorder so they don't need a VCR anymore.

real tvgeeks just TiVo the program, pull it off on their home computer using TiVo's Home Media Option. Then they can post it on a website, email it to a friend, or burn it to a CD/DVD.

Ah, but then there's the smaller group who laughs at TiVo and its antiquated ways and instead goes for Windows Media Center. They also burn their TV shows off on DVD, which makes it easier than trying to hand someone a VHS tape with a straight face.
Also a 160gb HDD filled with every episode of Futurama, Arrested Development, Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and Dead Like Me helps make it through the reruns on live tv.
So is there another TV/Tech Geek? TechTV Geek? Oh, wait that's an entirely different sect of TV Geeks.

I'm with you, Haggis. Except I go with MythTV, a Linux solution. Tivo's still have a monthly service fee, right? Otherwise I might pick one up for free just for kicks. I'm part of the smaller subset of TV/Tech geeks who are cheap.

I fail. We've got two HDTVs, two Hd-tivos but that's where it ends. I haven't owned a VCR since 2000. WTF would you do with a VCR?

I've only got three, the recliner, the multiple VCRs, and stacks and stacks of tapes (a dozen tapes of Sci-Fi channel reruns of the X-Files, and, yes, I kept all my Pokemon tapes from when I was a kid), and our family is currently working on getting the digital cable. Less than half of that, but hey, I'm only 16. And spending most of my allowance on box sets and collecting TV Guides has got to count for something, right?

Melissa, what the hell are you doing with VCRs? Do you have cassette tapes and 8 tracks too?

OK, this is the thread where I may be able to get a question answered. OK, geeks:
What is the benefit of TiVo over a DVR from your cable company? My DVR is a dual-tuner, 80 hour machine for $5.00/month and I didn't have to buy anything. I don't care about the "hook to computer/multimedia" stuff. My DVR has (from what I understand) the equivalent of Season Pass.
WAIT - just checked out the free offer on Amazon ($170.00 with a $170.00 rebate and free shipping). It's not a dual tuner. That's a deal-breaker for me. BUT, I'd still like to hear why TiVo is supposed to be better.
Thanks

1. At least one TV over 40 inches - Don't need one, don't want one. a 27" CRT is more than enough. I'd downgrade if I had the money to buy another TV right now.
2. At least one TiVo or Replay TV - We're not friends, then. Again, don't need one, don't want one, don't have one. I haven't seen anything on TV worth recording in years.
3. At least two VCR's - I have one DVD/VHS combo player. It gathers dust faster than any other electronic gadget I've ever owned.
4. A videotape filled with episodes of a show that only you enjoy - I don't watch repeats.
5. A recliner - I bought the biggest damn La-Z-Boy they make. It's the best piece of furniture ever made.
6. A TV small enough to take anywhere - I have a 13" stored in a closet somewhere. I don't need TV anywhere and everywhere.
7. 'Total Television' by Alex McNeil - IMDB is much better.
8. Digital cable or a satellite. - Again, don't need it. Don't want it. Don't have it. TV isn't worth $100 per month or more. The only reason I have cable at all is because I can't have cable internet without it and I don't want DSL. Besides, Discovery and History are still available on basic cable.
9. Two or more biographies by TV personalities that shouldn't have been written - Why? Celebs aren't that interesting.
10. 'Television's Greatest Hits' CDs by Tee Vee Toons - Again, why? TV music sucks.
Why do I come here? Why not? I'm interested in the medium, I just don't go ga-ga over it. I follow one series and after this season, I'm dropping it from my viewing schedual. I'd rather watch Deadliest Catch and Modern Marvels over another sitcom or predictable, boring, drama.

Hi, my name is Kathy and I still own a VCR.
I live in Iowa, my grandchildren live in Michigan, my daughters video camera only records, video tapes.
If i want to watch them when she sends them to me, I need a VCR. I have digital cable, in the living room, and our office. We have a DVD player. When I was laid up in bed, I watched DVD's. Haven't watched them since.
Some of us, just don't have the money to keep up with the latest and greatest :-(
