Alec Baldwin apologizes to the public and to his daughter on The View today for poor parenting. As Bob mentioned, he also tells the audience that he has asked to be released from his 30 Rock contract because he does not want to bring bad press to the show. (NBC has thankfully rejected that request)He has been making headlines all week after a really nasty voicemail message he left for his daughter was somehow leaked to the entertainment media-types. Baldwin is currently in a bitter custody battle over his 12-year old daughter, Ireland, with his ex-wife, Kim Basinger. Baldwin blames Basinger for leaking the audio, she denies it. She also released a statement saying that she hopes Baldwin gets control of his anger.
I wonder... is Alec's career really as damaged as he seems to think it is? Are people going to stop watching 30 Rock or suddenly dislike his 30 Rock character because he left a mean voicemail for his daughter? Am I the only one who thinks he's overreacting by attempting to resign from the show?

I really don't care, but then again it's a light news week.
No mass killings, no Bush f*ck-ups, no Don Imus, no Anna Nicole news, so the MSM has to focus on something.

I could really care less about his personal life. Seriously, aren't we at war? Who cares about this?

For all we know, he could have been right about his daughter. Not that he should have said it to her like that but still. I'm not sure what point I'm making. Basically, I want my 30 Rock.

Actually, I'm kind of interested. Mainly interested in the dynamics of divorce and the impact on children. I'm not emotionally invested in either of them but it does seem Alec has a hot temper and Kim B. seems to be willing to fight to keep her child from him. Maybe she is a witch or maybe there is some legitimate concern. Either way, I think this LONG battle is interesting. Not because of who is battling (that only brings attention) but because of so many parents who are involved in custody disputes and the unbelievable things parents are willing to do...often at the expense of children.

I wish more parents would stand up to their children, instead of giving into everything they want.

Rediculous that any one cares at all. Every parent has yelled at their kid like that.

Not only do I not care, I’m mad that anyone else DOES care.
I’m sure he said some rude things to her (I only listened to part of the clip played on TV yesterday), but who really cares.
Maybe he is a jerk, maybe he isn’t. Maybe he made a mistake, or maybe he gave her a taste of her own medicine.
I can’t pass judgement. I’ve certainly done worse. And besides who knows the context.

I never heard what instigated Baldwin's rant against his daughter.
I have been a stepmother for 12 years to a very ungrateful child. Her biological mother played games with my husband, treating him like dirt, and stealing from us financially. She taught her 18 year old daughter these very skills.
My husband never "went off" on his daughter, but I feel he treated her way too sweetly and never reprimanded her for poor behavior. Now, he and his biological wife have a spoiled brat on their hands who thinks the world owes her a living.
I can see Baldwin's frustration in each syllable. I feel for him.

If anything, I think this will bring more attention to 30 Rock, and not in a bad way.

You're not going to see advertisers pulling their sponsorship until Alec leaves the show. A week from now, we'll be back to guessing Nicole Ritchie's weight (my entry: 67 lbs). 30 Rock's finale is tonight, and come next season, no one's going to mention Alec's daughter and 30 Rock in the same breath anymore.

For those that heard the entire tape, it was pretty damaging. Enough so that a Los Angeles family court judge revoked his visitation until they can have a hearing. I've always believed that Baldwin had an anger control issue, and the tape is very threatening and completely inappropriate to direct at an 11 year old. If he wishes to leave the show and focus on his family, I think thats probably a good thing and its selfish for those out there who just care about their TV show to try to convince him otherwise. Where else in the world would we be giving advice to someone to spend more time at work and less time on their family?

Here's my question: if Kim Basinger didn't leak the voice mail message, who did? The daughter herself?

If his daughter has her phone turned off at a time when it had been previously arranged for him to call her, it seem pretty deliberate, or at least thoughtless, on the part of someone with access to the phone; so his frustration is understandable, and he has a legitimate right to scold her, although apparently opinions differ as to whether he was unhealthily abusive. Likewise, if the call was leaked, it had to be done by someone with access to the phone or the daughter's voicemail, which logically would be someone in Basinger's entourage. If she is not lying, then someone with access to the cell provider's computers where messages are stored has been monitoring numbers related to celebrities for dirt, and there needs to be an investigation.
Damaging the show based on this incident seems a fairly thin pretext for him to ask for him to be released from his contract, so it seems likely he was already unhappy with the show for some other reason. It will be interesting to see if his disgruntlement manifests in other ways.

Poor Alec! His Ex IS manipulating the whole thing for her own benefit..furthering the divide between the family. I am ashamed to admit that I, as a mother, yelled WAY worse at my teenaged, snotty, daughter. Good thing no one taped it! She is grown now and turned back into the lovely human being that we started with. Alec is known for his temper, but in his defense...anyone who withstands having a spoiled teenage daughter deserves a medal.

I refuse to listen to the tape because I don't care! America's obsession with what celebrities do is sickening!
The guy is a great actor and I don't expect anything else from him...

I would just like to agree with everyone's comments. With all of the stupid crap that celebrities pull, it is ridiculous that this is getting so much coverage. I know my parents said some pretty harsh things to me when i was a teenage girl and you know what, I deserved every word of it and I'm greatful for it and I have a wonderful relationship with them now.
He really really should not leave 30 Rock! It is one of the few shows I actually make sure I watch every week. The show definitly would not work as well without him. Don't Leave!!!

I think whatever tape is released only captures a small part of who Alec Baldwin really is. And honestly, I think it reflects badly not on Baldwin but on whoever leaked the tape. As for 30 Rock, I dont think it should have any bearing. If an actor is good enough like Baldwin it just shouldn't matter because he's too professional to let it affect his preformance, which is ultimately the only thing I really care about.

My GOD!
30 years ago, my partens got everything Red Foreman always promised Eric when he did someting room: his foot up his son's ass. And that wasn't a joke, that was a euphemism for actually taking off the belt and teaching his son "a lesson". And people thought that that was ok.
Now a father who has to live at the other side of the country to work and who only has very limited visitation rights and only get's a couple of phonecalls each week at the given time dials the number he expects his daughter to be reachable under (a CELL phone mind you, something you can carry anywhere) and then is angry because he's playing with his emotions.
Why do you think he got that angry? Do you think he really doesn't care at all about his daughter and that he just wants what's his because he "owns" her?
Thinking of all this makes me sick. Divorce can be a very ugly thing and I can't believe that this is actually news. That's what the cours and child services are for, to deal with this kind of stuff and not US, the public, who could care less because of rude words from a father to his daughter. 30 years ago, he could have actually slapped her around and people would have argued whether that would be ok or not, nowadays some stern words are regarded abuse while the child can say anything, and I mean anything. I witnessed stuff like this first hand. People sometimes just say things to hurt each other and I can't actually believe that this is getting blown up so much. Just because he's on TV people think they own his life. It's sickening.
