(S06E33) Tonight was the big night they've been talking about all season - Idol Gives Back. Over the course of the night, Idol tried its best to keep us entertained, inspired, and educated. Some of it worked, some of it didn't. Telethons are like that. Not every bit can be a gem. But it's all for a good cause, right? So, obviously we can't complain too loudly.
My overall impression was that it seemed way longer than two hours. And I'm not just saying that to be snarky. They seriously threw in way more than I can even begin to recap. I'd be here all night if I tried to get it all in this post. So, I'm just going to stick to the highlights, and you can tell me the things that stood out for you.
The first thing I noticed was that the judges were all dressed up tonight. This was a fancy affair, after all. Simon and Randy had jackets on for a change. And Paula, well, she had her cleavage on display.
Ryan got the drama rolling early, by telling us "We are putting on the biggest American Idol show ever" and "we have the most shocking result in Idol history." We also learned that 70 million votes were cast last night, and News Corp kicked in their $5 million donation.
What could be so shocking about tonight's results? That's the first thing Ellen Degeneres wanted to know too. Just who went home tonight?
After teasing us throughout the broadcast, it finally came down to just two who weren't safe. Chris vs. Jordin. Wait, how could that be? I nearly screamed (only I can't scream because I have laryngitis) when I heard Ryan tell Chris he was safe. What?? How could Jordin (my top pick) be going home? Ryan quickly told us that wait, Jordin was safe too, because they just couldn't let anyone go on "charity night."
This reprieve bought everyone another chance to sing next week. And Ryan assured us that last night's votes still count. Next week, the votes will be combined from the two weeks, and the BOTTOM TWO will go home. Whew! For a moment, I thought Ryan was going to tell us they were EXTENDING the season by another week.
So, are you glad nobody went home? My kids felt kind of cheated. They didn't appreciate being led on all night and then being tricked. I would usually be mad at Idol for the lame switcheroo, but I was just so relieved to hear Jordin was safe, I forgave them.
Other than the results being non-results, the rest of the show went pretty much as expected. There weren't any big surprises. Somehow the mystery duet spoiler was all over the internet so I knew Celine would be singing with Elvis Presley. I usually don't like cheesy gimmicks like this, but IT was the King. I love Elvis. Who cares if he's been dead for 30 years, he's still my American Idol. And he still out-performed Celine and every other living person out there.
Entertaining and inspirational moments that stood out for me:
- Josh Groban backed by African Children's Choir singing, "You Raise Me Up," just seemed real sincere and fitting for the evening. I found it uplifting.
- Jack Black performing "Kiss From a Rose" was one of the better comedic moments of the night. Like Elvis, I love Jack Black. He could do his crazy singing bits all night and I would find it entertaining. And how great was it when the judges critiqued him? Randy says, "it wasn't happening man, but maybe stretchy pants may have helped." Paula says, "The School of Rock called - they want their diploma back," Simon says, "You want the real truth? You were better than Sanjaya." But forget the judges, Seal LOVED it. And I did too.
- I also loved The Simpsons bit. How great was it to see Simon audition for Homer, Lisa, and Marge? Homer told him to "lose the accent, Mary Poppins, this is *American* Idol." Then Simon was shown the exit -- a trap door in the floor that led to a den of lions. Bart said, "The lions haven't eaten this well since Dunkelman." Classic. Gotta love Dunkelman jokes.
- I liked Carrie Underwood's video in Africa singing "I'll Stand By You" to the kids. I know, it's sappy, and meant to tug at the heartstrings. But sometimes I really am sensitive. Besides, we learned something too. Every 30 seconds a child in South Africa is orphaned by AIDS.
- I chuckled when the guy (Eric McCormack) from Will & Grace said, "If every person that ever voted for Sanjaya gave just one dollar, we could do so much with it."
- I liked that Ellen put her money where her mouth is, and donated $100,000 and asked her rich friends to do the same.
- In Katrina-ravaged Louisiana, many people are still living in a disaster zone or in temporary FEMA parks two years later.
- In an African slum that Ryan and Simon visited, there are 1.2 million people living in a space the size of Central Park. And there are over 50,000 orphans fending for themselves.
- Paula visited the Boys and Girls Club in Hollywood (one of 4000 clubs throughout the country). Paula told a group of kids that she got into dance because her mom worked all the time.
- In the Appalachian mountains in Kentucky, the unemployment rate is more than twice the national average and almost half the adults there didn't finish school. Many of them have trouble reading. Education is crucial for their children's future.
- Back in Africa, Ryan and Simon visited a family of 14 who live in a house the size of a tent. Emily takes care of her three kids and 10 AIDS orphans (three of which are HIV positive). Ryan and Simon also visited several other people who were very sick with AIDS. Back in California, Ellen tells us that $30 can buy ten children the ARA drugs they need.
- Back in Africa again, we meet a man named John, who has gone to 280 funerals. We learn that malaria kills one child every 30 seconds. Ryan visited a clinic where over 300 children arrive with malaria each day. The good news is that malaria is curable and preventable.
- Madonna is in Malawi to tell us that a lot of the kids are HIV positive. "With your money, it's as simple as this, you save a life."
- The contestants performed Quincy Jones' "Time to Care" anthem and Bono's "American Prayer" anthem. Neither blew me away. The group sing-alongs never do. Although I was surprised by how good Phil's voice sounded in the group setting. And the kids all performing in white suits somehow reminded me of "The Brady Six."
- The Ben Stiller running gag wasn't all that funny. Actually, the funniest part of that bit was that he bragged about being in Mystery Men.
- Earth, Wind and Fire were actually pretty cool. They were the most upbeat performers of the evening. Everyone else went with very slow, serious songs. Kelly Clarkson, Annie Lennox were okay, but did kind of bring things down a bit.
- I didn't care for the Ford musical video featuring a "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" or the part tagged on at the end featuring the 36 stars stars lip synching to "Staying Alive." Well, Miss Piggy was cool. But really, this is all we get of Hugh Grant and Keira Knightley? They have been hyping their appearances for weeks -- and this is it?
- Il Divo? At first glance, I thought it was "The Wiggles in suits." Honestly, this is the first time -- and I hope the last time -- I ever watch Il Divo perform. Can you say, "Bathroom break?"
However, I still want to know how much money FOX received in advertising revenue for the night. No matter how much money they raised, or how many people they educated, I still find it questionable that they might make a profit on a fundraising event. I know many of you don't care, and that's fine. At least I know Ken agrees with me.
The evening ended with a taped appearance of Bono telling the contestants that this generation can be the one that ends poverty. He believes music makes the impossible -- possible. And the show ends with the kids singing Bono's anthem.
I hope Bono is right. I too hope this generation will end poverty.
Next Week: Tuesday Night -- The Top 6 perform once again. Wednesday night -- TWO people go home.

Overall, I was happy with the Idol Gives Back show. Sure, it was long and I didn't care for some of the time-fillers and some of the performances, but I was very affected by the visions of those poor children living in poverty and disease. I think it is wonderful that American Idol was able to use its popularity to help them.
Yeah, I felt a little cheated at the end to find out that no one was going home. However, I figured it out about halfway through, so I was preparing myself. There was no way Jordin was going home!
So, the Idols knew about the "shocker," right?? There's no way Chris would have just smiled to hear he beat out Jordin, unless he's really that full of himself. If he didn't know they were all safe, I would have expected him to go into shock or something. Although poor Jordin's tears looked so sincere... whether she knew or not, I wish Ryan didn't do that to her! Love you Jordin!

I have to say it was hard to watch the show at some points when you are a sensitive person. The hardest parts were watching ryan and simon in Africa and hearing of the woman who died, the little boy who passed and all of those clips. It was a good way to shake up people to do something.
The performances of most of the musical acts were boring at times. And while other people may disagree with me I believe that the best group singing was Bono's anthem.
I was thinking that they all might be safe for the night as soon as they said Phil and Lakisha were safe. But I was expecting them to say they'd be back thursday with the real results so that all of the contestants could enjoy the show with ease.
Poor Jordin, she looked so devastated though. It makes you wonder if they did know all along or not because of her reaction of almost being eliminated. Or if certain ones knew by passing by people and left others in the dark. I really want to know who would have been leaving this week regardless if 2 people are leaving next week or not. Call me selfish LOL.

So if they're combining votes, there's still a decent chance that Jordin is being sent home? It seems that she and Chris, being at the bottom of 70 million votes, have a big hill to climb next week when the voting numbers drop to 30ish million.

It was good to see no one voted off- I guess that was the "shocker"
So, next week two people will go home
These 3 are the bottom 3 next week
1) Lakisha
She started off with her best performance, never lived up to it since, she does "shout"
and cannot take advice from anyone-
2) Phil
Oh , all of a sudden, after his only decent performance, on "Country Night", he says that was his "genre"- too late-
'cause thsi past week, he injected no "country" into his performance!
3) Blake
Yeah, the beat-box thing was cool, but the VOICE is not an "IDOL" voice...
Interesting guy, would be able to do other things, but he is not an AMERICAN IDOL
( made "Imagine" boring, not doing justice to John Lennon's heart and soul)
Jordin is the one to beat!
And Chris is so easy to listen to-
Melinda will always have work, she is a professional singer, very accomplished, but she will not be an Idol...

okay, the contestants CLEARLY knew they weren't going home..they were all smiles the entire time the "elimination" sections were being done. Even when Ryan said that Chris was safe, Jordin had this huge knowing smile. I knew no one was going home from the very beginning of the show, and I was pissed.
Next week will be excruciating though....I can't have them cut two people out in one week, the risk is too high to lose a popular performer because of one of those "bottom 3 scares" that inevitably happens around this point.

Midnight Penguin -
They didn't say Chris and Jordin were the bottom two, they just happened to be called last. i'm pretty sure we can rest easy about Jordin so long as she keeps up the great performances next week.

Didn't expect the shocker about Jordin.....was, like her, in tears, and relieved to find out it was a reprieve until next week. I feel she is going all the way. She has one super set of pipes!

Loved the Simpsons bit and of course Kelly Clarkson. Elvis rocked it hardcore as well.
As for the no one getting ousted, I knew from the beginning when Ryan Seacrest said he would be picking the names of the constestants to tell them their fate IN RANDOM ORDER. The only way for this to work out is if they are one big stinky liars rigging everything or if no one was going home and thus no matter who he picked would be "safe."
Go Jordin!

I think the evening was great to earn money for a good cause, but torture on the idol contestants. I don't see any reason to have them all sit there, "you're safe", one by one. Then to pull the "shocker". The way it was done, was just horrible and so "mean" to Jordin. I know they weren't aware of the situation. She was in tears and they were all loving on her when they knew she was staying and they all were. I think Chris's smile was not one of "joy" because he was "safe" I feel it was an "oh my gosh, can't believe it's me and not Jordin" and "I feel bad"....type of smile.
I know for sure they all better "bring their A-game" next week. Two go home....and then four remain!!!!
Wow....this is getting tough.

I thought the show was pretty moving in spots, but what REALLY ticked me off was seeing how bad things are in Louisianna. I mean, for Christ's sake, can't the government help them get rid of the f**king garbage and tear down those death-trap houses that are condemned. And that trailer park. You have got to be kidding me. Why isn't our government doing something to help these people?? Why do we continue to spend billions of dollars in Iraq while these poor people in New Orleans are being treated like crap. I couldn't believe the slums that they showed over in Africa. But then you see what it's like for our fellow citizens over here and it's just plain despicable. I think that everyone who phoned in for the dime yesterday should call their representatives and raise a stink about this. Then maybe something will get done . . . but I'm not holding my breath.

I honestly don't know why Chris is so popular. His voice is nasally, whiny, and is overall unpleasant. Phil has his troubles too (I'm definitely not a fan), but judging on voice alone,.. Phil's voice blows Chris out of the water.
First Sanjaya and now Chris,.. I'll never understand AI's voting public.

good show, cried alot. yeah, I get emotional during footage like that. I tried to hold it in, but yeah cried like a baby. I just get so upset that medicine can't get to Africa. We have lots of big companies making tons of money- if the could just provide medicine for those in need. okay i won't go on. i get angry/emotional
but okay let's skip all the "shocking" talk and the time it wasted. so much time was wasted by them telling the six they were safe that my DVR cut off them singing that last song, because Idol ran over.
loved kelly, annie lennox, carrie underwood and josh groban. the elvis/celine bit was okay. i fast foward the rest of the music acts. Wish Bono had sung-- or did he at the end (and I just don't know because the show ran over)?

To D Collin- my TiVo starts before and ends a bit after so I caught it all and no Bono didn't sing.
Yeah I did my best immitation of "the Sanjaya girl" too boo-hooing my way through lots of cleenex. The conditions that kids are forced to live in for much of the world are quite deplorable and there's no need for it and really not excuse for it.
Liz you left out the funniest part, Ryan reading the cue cards wrong in the beginning (or whatever that was don't know if he was reading it or just trying to talk).
Hey did anybody else think Jack Black has a cool singing voice?
I'd have to say Josh with the kids choir was the best moment. The kids sounded so cute!

I totally agree with Patti. On a night when AI was being charitable to the world, how could they have been so mean to Jordin? I thought it was cruel to put her through that. They could have achieved similar suspense throughout the show but eliminated the cruelty by saying to Chris and Jordin at the same time, "You're both safe." Kudos to Jordin for pulling herself together after what must have been a heart-attack inducing moment.

Not to "pat myself on the back", so to speak, but, how lucky can I be with watching my favorite female performer sing a duet with my all-time favorite male performer and singing one of my all-time favorite songs?? Not to take away from the theme of last nights telecast, but I was "thunderstruck" when they performed together, How they did it???, hey, I don't know, but it gave me the "heebie-jeebies" and "goose bumps" and I don't remember most of the show after that, but the stunt that the producers pulled with letting both Jordin and Chris go through that emotional "torture" and then blow it off with a "just kidding! tee-hee-hee" attitude is unforgiveable! Now did Jordin and Chris actually recieve the lower vote totals or was it a play of the producers for more "sensationalism"? You can't tell me that after her rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" the other night that Jordin ended up in the bottom two when for weeks on end, Sanjaya was never put in that position until the week that he got "whacked"! I'm hoping that the "entertainment" side of last nights show is released on DVD soon because I did find it very entertaining. I think that last nights "bottom two" will, when all is said and done, be the two finalists and Jordin will "blow Chris Richardsons' doors in"!!

I saw the "shocker" coming from a mile away. If Jordin had been voted off, it would have been the last night I watched.
The three "boys" suck -- even Blake. They should send all three of them home next week.

On the Lousianna Comment, You ask why the Government is not doing anything, Why are the residents not doing anything? If there is trash, help clean it up...I know of about 5 folks who have personally gone to those area's and helped rebuild and a majority of the folks they are helping have sat on their butts and acted as if they are owed the help. God helps those who help themselves and those who do are much stronger for the lesson. It is the children who we need to have compassion for, because they are innocent and learn by viewing the actions of those adults around them.
I personally donated money and I hope everybody else did, if only $20 it will still go far. If you did not, you need to search deep and figure out why...
I did not like the way they handled the voting..they should have been upfront about it at the beginning of the show..I do not believe Jordin knew anything about this because of the tears and relief after they said she was safe..I was just so upset thinking that she was headed home.
Jack Black and Ellen really made this show! And of course Elvis..LOL
