Michael Ausiello at TV Guide is reporting a big scoop: NCIS star Mark Harmon is threatening to walk off the hit CBS show.
Citing inside sources, Ausiello says that Harmon has always been fed up with producer Donald Bellisario's (Magnum, P.I., JAG, Quantum Leap) "chaotic management style" and wants off the show. The source also says that Harmon is one of the nicest guys on television and that he's in the right on this one. The dispute is described as "a big standoff."
So I'll ask you readers the same thing that Ausiello asks his readers: can NCIS survive without Mark Harmon, or is he the main reason to watch the show?

Gibbs is the driving force in the show. All the characters and all the interplay between them makes this my favorite show. If you focus on just one character per episode learning some background about them is always interesting, but if you take anyone of them out of the mix permenately, it would destroy the dynamic that makes the show so interesting to watch. As mentioned by a previous writer, when Gibbs was in Mexico it was hard to watch the show, though I was impressed with how much Tony grew & that some of his "unknown" abilities came through when he took over briefly, Gibbs is still the man who needs to be in the driver's seat.

Mark Harmon as Gibbs is the focal point of the show and NCIS without Gibbs just won't work. That being said, Bellasario deserves a lot of credit for creating and sustaining the high quality storytelling that drives NCIS as well as Quantum Leap and J.A.G. in years past. Getting rid of Bellasario would be as disastrous as losing Harmon. They must find a way to coexist.
The idea of David James Elliot returning to play Rabb again in a reconstituted NCIS has its appeal, especially since the core audience of NCIS were all J.A.G. aficionados
but there would have to be some herculean writing to create a plausible reason for a J.A.G. officer to be placed in charge of an NCIS team. With the way J.A.G. ended and considering the amount of time passed since the show ended, it is possible that Harm is already in NCIS and working his way up. I guess it could work.
And legions of fans would be very happy!

I would watch.... and I think they could pull it off too. Yes it would not be the same NCIS that we know today, but I think it could be done.
Not that I want Gibbs to go anywhere. A previous poster had it right when he called Gibbs "The cool dad".

I think the show needs to keep Mark Harmon and get rid of the other guy. I like Mark Harmon. He is the glue to the team. If he goes, I will not watch the show again. The one they need to get rid of is the director. I just can't stand her character.

What do you all mean? He is the life of the show it's the only reason why I watch it. And donnozo dont make a good team leader! I agree with all the people that say that they should cancel the show instead of going on without him.

If Mark Harmon leaves the show, I will no longer watch.
Viewers do not watch programs because of who the producer is - we watch because of the cast. The producer should settle the matter with Mark Harmon - and leave his ego out of the picture. If the producer cannot see the disaster that lies ahead if he lets this show be destroyed, he has no business being a producer.

I would definitely stop watching NCIS if Mark were to quit. While I enjoy the other characters very much, the show would not be as good without Gibbs.

Mark Harmon is NCIS. The only way it could go on past one more season without him would be to replace him with a character with the same appeal and dynamics or a stronger character- perhaps Jack Bower from 24! Although that might be a little too tense. Now, of course you could replace it with an all new Army version of NCIS called - CID! or whatever they call NCIS over there.

I can see the sense in given actors last minute scripts to keep story lines under wraps. What I don't understand is why so many "managers" (in whatever form they come!) feel that without their micro management everything will fall to pieces ("micro" often translates into "messy"). Looking at the cast, most of the actors (not all) are very good at their craft and they could make a production run smoothly IN SPITE of people like Bellisario. Yes, he has come up with some great entertainment, but he needs to know when to back off, as well as understand that relationship suffer when one party has to work for 16 hours each day! I fully support Harmon and hope that NCIS will have a long future ahead of it with Leroy Jethro Gibbs at the helm.

I love NCIS but it won't be the same without Harmon, so i'd rather have it canceled.
I think that Harmon and Donald Bellisario should try to get something to work. If they can't I guess that's it. It either goes on without Harmon or the sh0ow is canceled

Well, the show is not made up simply of Gibbs, but he is a big part. I can imagine the show without him, but they would have to make up for his absence. Either Tony would have to shape up and take the mantle, or they would need another SAC.
The storyline is deteroriating lately though. To have an investigating team leader supervising three people to step in as acting director of NCIS... Jeeez, what next? The Commandant of the Marine Corps will go on leave, and the sergeant of the guard of will stand in for him, or what?

My son got me to watch NCIS and I would really be upset if Mark Harmon quit the show. He adds a lot of humor and compassion to the show. I am so glad that I have Season 1,2 and 3. If he does quit I can see it going down hill and finally getting cancelled.

OH NO!!! Please don't let him leave the show!! He's the glue that keeps it together!! The cast is GREAT as it IS.....everyone is perfect in their characters.....It's going to win awards for them all.....I just bought the DVD's of Seasons 1,2 & 3 so I could see the ones I may have missed while I was in the hospital.....I treasure them....I love the show so much....and Mark reminnds me so much of my dearly departed soulmate it's like he was here watching with me still.. I hope Mark doesn't leave , but I know he's got a nice family who needs him, too...so change the shooting schedule to accomodate the whole team and Mark!! (so he can be home with his wife and boys } I hope evrything works out for all of the actors.....especially Mark and the crew.

I still remember when Mark Harmon played an Animal Control in the episode 905-WILD on EMERGENCY, in regards to a small pigmy goat. He's a great actor and for him to walk off the NCIS series, would be detremental. As far as I can see, much of the main actors, count on his encouragment. God knows I would. May he find a way to resolve this and peace to him and the rest of the crew. Enough said!

After watching the final episode of the season, here in UK last week, I was devastated when Gibbs "retired" to Mexico !!! PLEASE tell me that he will be returning in another series. I think I would still watch NCIS as I like the rest of the cast but without Mark Harmon, I would be less interested. As far as I am concerned, he MAKES the show.
