In an interview with Popgurls.com, Heroes producer Bryan Fuller discloses that, yes, the character of Zach on the show was indeed gay and they were going to follow the story through, but then negotiations with the actor's (Thomas Dekker) management got "ugly."
Fuller says that Zach was going to come out on the show and actually help Claire "come out" about her superpower, but then reps for Dekker said that they didn't want to make the character gay because it might hurt his chances of getting the role of John Connor in the new series The Sarah Connor Chronicles. So they took out a line that would have said that Zach was gay and never really got into it again, though in everyone's mind the character was still gay. Fuller, gay himself, says that he was hurt and insulted by the entire "debacle."
They had whole episodes revolving around Zach planned, but then his reps pulled him from the show completely.

It would be nice to only blame his management for this. But an actor, even a young one, has the ultimate say. If his management was doing something he disagreed with, it's his call, not theirs. So I have to blame Dekker himself for this.
Also, I read the popgurls interview, and if Fuller and Kring really meant all that crap about wanting to be inclusive and how a gay character was a necessary part of that, they can prove it by adding one for real next season. And give him some powers, too (be brave & make it a "him"--TV lesbians are too interesting to straight guys to count as a real statement of diversity). Otherwise, it's all just lip service.

Scott, I can agree to an extent about Dekker having a say, but I'm more willing to give him a pass given his age. I can't imagine being that young and going up against the people who are supposed to have my best interest at heart.

Glad to know now who to blame. He's gay and he didn't want to be gay on TV? What bullshit is that? He's "insulted", bullshit, he should have said "I'm doing this, if you don't like it too bad" to his manager, he didn't, he's an asshole and I'm insultted by him.

David - The producer, Fuller, is gay, and was insulted. Nowhere does it say that the actor, Dekker, is gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Sadly this sort of thing used to be all too common - actors not wanting to play characters who were Gay out of fear that it would hurt their chances to get their work. The worst part was that they were often right. I can't imagine however that this is the case today.

Oh thanks jDub I got the names mixxed up. Still the whole thing makes me sick. I can't wait until The Sarah Connor Chronicles fails and the actor is out of work.

Thanks for pointing that out, jDub, because like David I read it to say the actor was gay, and then I was confused. Now, not so much.
Personally, I'm sick of the whole gay/straight thing. I don't care who you have sex with, I don't want to talk to you about it unless you're a close personal friend. And since that's the only difference between the two, I see no need to toss it around all the time.

I think it would only be fitting if the character John Connor was made gay in the new show.

Um, I don't think there's a gay character on Lost.
Bryan Fuller is the coolest TV producer out there, "Company Man" was one of the best TV episodes of the season...it almost justified the lost of Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me...I'm really looking forward to his new show.

I am happy the kid (or kid's management) took no crap and maybe them change it. There needs to be less crap going on about being gay...any kind of tv show should be focusing on the point of the show and not of someone's sexual preference or their race unless the show is about something like that (will and grace and queer eye are two I can think of).

I won't waste my time watching the SARA CONNER CHRONICLES, as a gay man, I won't waste my time on people who think gay is a problem.

So CaliberSRT4 gay characters can only appear in shows specifically about gay people? Otherwise they gotta be straight cause that's like, ya know... normal...
The idea of mutants or people with special abilities, sometimes advantageous (self-healing) sometimes not (radioactivity), is that they function as a metaphor for being an outsider. This became the operative idea behind the X-Men (a Heroes antecedent). People should not simply be accepted for their difference. Their difference should be celebrated as it contributes to the richness of the world.

I hate gay charaters if they are only there to make it seem like the creators aren't assholes. On Heros there was a whole storyline planned out with the cheerleader and him coming out.
And it's really dumb to go off a hugely popular show for a show that will be on Fox and not get more than a season.

The same thing happened with Fuller on 'Dead Like Me' with George's Dad. The executives removed a sub-plot about him having a gay affair that was heavily hinted early on.

I watched Dead Like Me several times now, I have never picked up that. Of course I like the way it turned out anyways. I think if he turned out gay that would mess up the show's feelings.

It's a shame Dekker felt that way, but hey it's the reality of Showbiz, people can get typecast. But he needs to realize that every role he takes he risk the chance of being typedcast by that character.
It happens to everyone, i've seen Patrick Stewart in a dozen movies and yet to me he is still Capt. Picard. It happens, it's a risk you take when you sign on for the role.

But he was gonig to be the "gay charater" on a season of Heros. Picard was a charater that last 15 years. There is a difference.

I just think that any kind of "difference" issue should be left out because that takes away the main point of the show. It's like making Wolverine a chick or something...people would be talking about why they did that instead of actually getting the show across...same thing with making a character gay, I just think there would be more talk/concentration on that instead of the actual show. And I am sorry to say that if they ever did put a gay character in, I will stop watching it.
