(S03E20) This show is generally just depressing enough that it doesn't bother me. Not in this episode. Watch out, because everything and everyone gave you a reason to reach for a Kleenex box. That isn't a bad thing. In the case of Grey's Anatomy, it's probably safe to argue that something is being done right if everyone across America has a little urge to sniffle. All that being said... man, is it good TV or what?
So here we go... George came back! He left, but he came back! Everyone knows what I'm talking about. Back up first though. The moment I think we all sort of felt was inevitable finally occurred. Izzie's daughter (she's only got one that we know of, and she gave it up for adoption eleven years ago) has turned up in a Seattle Grace bed and the poor girl is sick. Leukemia. Her name is Hannah, and while she currently has no desire to see her bio-mom, she'd love a big helping of her bone marrow. Kleenex moment number one. (Sidebar on that... despite the sweet demeanor of the parents, isn't is possible that they never actually "asked" Hannah to see her real mother and they instead said they just found a donor? I can see a couple of adoptive parents not wanting their child to meet the real deal.)
So George sits with Izzie through the surgery, brings her back to her room, helps dress her, and initially says he's going get an orderly to give Izzie a push around the hospital in her wheelchair. I think this was partly due to the fact that he had been blowing off his "wife" all day, but more so a reaction to the night he spent with Izzie. Lots of pent up guilt. So he left. But then he came back and I'm going to assume everyone is split on that. I'm personally not a huge Gizzie fan, but for those that are, there's your Kleenex moment number two.
Next up we had the ongoing saga that is Alex's relationship with Jane Doe/Ava and for once, I finally felt horrible for her. Is that how it really works when you have amnesia and major facial reconstructive surgery? I hope not. Your picture just gets plastered on the news and anyone who may have been missing someone that slightly bares your resemblance can come claim you. Obvious question? Why was no blood test done to test the father's paternity? Instead, "did your daughter have her tonsils removed" is plenty of verification. What a horrible way to get someones hopes up. Kleenex moment number three.
Moving on to Meredith "I'm barely in my own show" Grey. She had a pseudo-sob moment when it came to connecting with her step-mother, but the real Kleenex moment for her occurred when she called Derek, he didn't pick up, and she had no reason to know why. From Shepherd's place, how much does that suck? Your Harvey Wallbanger drinking boss says you're being passed on a promotion you deserve because of who you fell in love with. Ouch. My only thing against this little set-up is that it would appear to be something that can last the rest of the season and thus gives us the groundwork for why Mer and Der won't be making sweet, sweet love in-between seasons. He's totally going to hold this against her in some strange, twisted way and I'm not sure I like the idea of that.
More thoughts:
-
Cristina is freaking me out. The whole gung-ho about marriage story she got here kind of makes her a little scary. Which isn't good, since she was a little scary to begin with.
-
Weber trying to hit on women is gold. Priceless stuff.
-
There was just about no Addison in this episode which is probably a good thing since after next week's installment, we're going to get almost two full hours of her.
-
Was it just me, or did Callie look terrible in this episode? I know she was supposed to have been working for something like two days straight, but c'mon! From her to Izzie who looks like a million bucks. And she just had a bunch of bone marrow sucked out! It's like we're being led to root for Gizzie because the actual wife is dumpy looking.
-
I want Mark Sloane to be my wingman.
So there you have it. Another glorious, angst ridden episode has come to a close and I think it's worth a 4 out of 7 on our scale. As I mentioned earlier, I really want to know what the deal with Hannah's adoptive parents is. I think they're far more conniving than they're letting on and because Izzie is so sweet, it might not cross her mind. Other than that, I think I feel OK about how things are. Well... except Gizzie. Oh right, and Alex's eerie relationship with Jane Doe. Oh, and... nevermind, I'll stop.

She's attractive, sassy, successful, independent and rich. So why the hell are we supposed to believe that Callie would need to chase around snivelling-whiner-emotionalwreck-nothot-dramaking George? Especially after he disses her time and time again. Every other relationship (even Gizzie) kinda makes sense except this one.
And by the way, its just this kind of discussion that is making this show harder and harder to watch. What was once a fun, smart, medical drama is now so completely a soupy "i'll do anything to get that man" daytime soap.
call it... "Greys of our Lives"

The biggest criticism I have of the "Mer and Der" plotline is that in the real world, I would think that Shepherd could easily sue Weber and the hospital once Weber admitted that the sole reason for not promoting Shepherd is some lame promise made to Meredith's now-dead mom. Not to mention tha if Meredith's happiness is the underlying motivation, Weber would know that Derek won't be happy, and therefore won't make Meredith happy, if his ambition is frustrated and he has good reason to blame and resent Meredith's place in his life as the cause.

Yes, it's contrived and soap-ish, but I can't get enough!!
1) I totally thought that Alex was going in for a DNA cheek-swab when he asked Faceless to open her mouth. They're doctors! They're going to rely on the presence (or absence) of tonsils?
2) I'd be pissed and not sleeping, too, if my husband was skulking around with Izzie. However, I would look like the rich Latino goddess that Callie is, no matter how awful I felt or how little sleep I had gotten. Duh! Rule #1 - always look hotter!
3) Derek is totally going to hold this against Meredith, but no matter what, I don't see the Chief changing his mind. They've broken up and gotten back together too much to trust him and give him the position even if he breaks it off with her. Not that there's anything wrong with that - I think that Bailey was right when she said that what they did was nothing if they didn't have anyone to share it with. However, she's pretty much the most enlightened one on the show, is she not?
Good TV. I'm so glad it's back!

I actually hated almost everything about this episode. Two world renowned cardiologists bickering like children during a heart procedure. The chief acknowledging that he'll let his personal life (re: promises to Ellis) get in the way of making the proper choice for his replacement. George cheated on his wife and its supposed to turn into a big romantic thing when really Callie doesn't deserve to get screwed over like she's about to be. Everybody having to lie to everybody else to protect Izzie's privacy, and then George showing no regard for it at all, including his "make me" comment that should have been met with security dragging him away. Meredith being a royal bitch to her replacement mommy. Derek even contemplating that Meredith complicates his career path. And then the adoptive parents who basically said "We demand your bone marrow, you're obligated to do it and you get nothing in return. You don't get to share your daughter's life, we won't even let you see her, just give it to us and then we'll disappear again." I agree that you do anything you can to save your kid, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.

No, I don't agree that it's good tv at all, especially compared to how this show was in its prime i.e. Season 1.
There is too much being crammed into each episode and the writers aren't developing the characters any more. Just throwing stuff at them and seeing if it will stick. Christina is one character that they've taken the time to develop, Alex is another. Burke has become one note, Bailey and the actual teaching of the interns has completely disappeared! That was one of the best aspects of the show. Now you could take the crap that's going on and put it in any setting and it would make no difference.

Last season I was such an Izzie fan with the whole Denny storyline, but this season I just cannot stand the character and George is a close second. All this is very disappointing since George was really my favorite of the whole group. Here's what "Gizzie" boils down to: George marries a great gal in Callie who thinks he's the perfect guy, they fight and George has a drunken affair with Izzie (who treats his wife like complete garbage), and now we're supposed to accept this as some romantic payoff? When did adultery become romantic? All these sands-through-the-hourglass-moments are making this show more and more difficult to watch.

I thought this episode was mostly terrible. I don't know, maybe this show just isn't for me anymore. I honestly can't tell if it's because the quality is down or if I could only handle 3 seasons of this stuff.
Meredith AND Shepard were completely ridiculous this week. At least we got some good stuff with Alex...

Was Hannah immaculately conceived? Doesn't Izzie at least know his name, so the adoptive parents can track him down and see if he or anyone in his family is a donor match? Or was Izzie just a total slut in high school, and has no clue?

THEY NEED TO HIRE NEW WRITERS BEFORE THEY LOOSE THEIR AUDIENCE!
When things become overly complicated or when it seems that not one character can have actual happiness, I think that the risk of loosing the audience becomes very real. We need to feel like the struggle results in the reward!

I LOVED the moment George "came back" to Izzie. Now George needs to own up to the mistake he made in marrying Callie. People get married for all kinds of reasons, not all of them good. George married Callie because she was there and loved him and his Dad died, but George does NOT love Callie. At least not in the "forever and ever, can't live without you, best friends" kind of way. I think he likes Callie, but "likes" doesn't cut it in marriage.
TR (George) and Katherine (Izzie) are best friends on and off the smal screen and their "chemistry" shows. What a GREAT "hook up!" I hope though that George gets honest for his sake, Callie's sake and Izzie's sake. Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy.
As for "The chief," he doesn't need "man whore lessons from Mark.

Grieving process! One of the top ten rule of grieving. Do not make life altering decisions.
Callie tricked George into marrying her because he was in huge pain. Give me a break. There are also many times when Callie acts like the high and mighty Doctor, who considers Husband George to be beneath her.
I never saw it coming, but know that Izzie loves George. (Husband and friends are saying GO GEORGE)
When Denny died Shonda said she had plans for Izzies life. Looking as if those plans just might include George in a big way. Seriously? Seriously!

Gizzie sucks! We are supposed to believe that after one night of drunken sex that George and Izzie are in love. Whatever! Callie is way too good for George and she needs to leave his ass and get a better guy. I used to love Izzie and George as friends, but now I hate them both.
