As I posted earlier today, Simon caused quite a stir on last night's American Idol when he was caught rolling his eyes in response to Chris Richardson's heartfelt mention of the Virginia Tech tragedy. Many of us have been speculating about both Chris' sincerity, and Simon's seeming insensitivity. But whatever Simon's intention while rolling his eye (and I doubted all along that it was intentionally disrespectful), he knows it didn't look good. And that's why today Simon is explaining his actions. In his defense, Simon claims he was talking to Paula about Chris and his nasally singing, so he didn't even hear Chris make the V-Tech comments. Simon apparently rolled his eyes in response to what he was saying to Paula, rather than what Chris said.
Unfortunately for Simon, that's not how it looked to those of us watching at home.
Simon addressed the misunderstanding, saying "I did want to clear this one up because, you know, this is a very very sensitive subject. The irony is that we did want to try and set the right tone on the show. And then something like this happens, and it just starts fanning the flames."
Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe also defended Simon, stating, "This is a sad time for everyone, so it is especially disheartening that a quick camera cutaway could have been misinterpreted."
Of course, this could all have been avoided if Simon just quit chatting with Paula so much and paid closer attention during his own show.

Why should he give a damn about VT? Honestly, what is it with Americans thinking that the pain of one small group must be shared by the rest of the world?

Of course he wasn't rolling his eyes at the VT comment! He was rolling his eyes at the fact Chris sung badly, came up with a worst excuse and Paula seemed to agree with Chris and his lame excuses. This isn't spin, what is spin is what the people who have it out for Simon and the show are reading into it.

It seemed quite strange for people to even assume that it was disrespectful, I think people just wake up in the morning wanting to start a new thing or two.

To # 2 bgdc:
It is called compassion. Based on your comment, it seems like you are lacking any. I don't think Americans need to share any pain with the rest of the world. But any decent person would feel compassion for those people affecting by the tragedy in VT. I can't help but wonder how you reacted to September 11th. You should be ashamed.

We watched the show last night, and did not take Simon's gesture to be anything other then what it was meant. Our hometown guy, Chris sang terribly. Simon was conversing with Paula about CR's nasally tone. And Chris, I don't know any singers who sing nasally on purpose, but hey, I could be wrong so please don't scream at me.
America please keep being compassionate.
Peace, from VA

More proof political correctness is ruining America. Let's pretend Simon Cowell *was* rolling his eyes at the VT tribute. What's wrong with that? He's his own man, of free will, and if he just wants AI to be about ENTERTAINMENT, why can't he have (and express) that opinion by rolling his eyes?
Frankly, I was happy to watch AI last night and see very little of anything but SINGING and ENTERTAINMENT -- you know, the premise of the show? :)

I agree that Simon was talking to Paula at the time Chris referred to the VPI tradegy, which is close to my heart as a native southwest Virginian. What I don't get is how anyone could think that Sanjaya should be an American Idiol--he definately can't sing. The weird hair do's and other stupid things look like a cover up for his inability to sing. I think there needs to be a better way to select the best when people are making a joke of something this important to a young person's future.

What should I be ashamed of?! Thirty people are dead, sad? Yes, but this is American Idol.
Maybe you should reread, or learn how to read. My comment had NOTHNIG to do with VT and everything to deal with Simon rolling his eyes at the lameness that was Chris last night.
I hope Chris goes home just to prove that his singing sucked and his "it's the way I sing" (what Simon was rolling his eyes at) was bullshit.

Opps... I got so used to defending myself i wans't paining attention. :)
Anyways it was American Idol, not the news. We watch TV to excape from the real world.
That said no one is forcing the rest of the world to be sad, they are reporting on it though. I think the rest of the world cares just so they can bitch we have guns and they don't. Anyways unless Simon says something tonight on the topic this is the last I have to say.

STOP! STOP! PLEASE PLEASE STOP! This is such asinine nonsense. This is the millionth post I've seen about this and it has to stop.
What you fail to do is actually state what Simon did wrong. You are so busy rewinding the tape to see when his eyes roll that you fail to even analyze what that means. What is wrong with him rolling his eyes? How can one roll their eyes at a tragedy? You are so busy exciting yourself over the fact that there is a tragedy that has garnered intense media attention and the fact that Simon Cowell rolled his eyes to even think about what was done wrong. He clearly wasn't rolling his eyes AT the tragedy, seeing as that would make no sense, so it was either a) a case of bad timing, or b) he was rolling his eyes at Chris' MENTION of the tragedy. And what is wrong with that?
I challenge the author to explain what was done wrong... and don't simply repeat WHAT Simon did, tell me what it means and why it's so controversial.

It's not enough that Simon shows his insensibility for the VT victims on air, Jeffery Christian, Am Idol report card reviewer callously showed distain for Richardson’s heartfelt comments and made light of the VT tragedy in his review when he wrote “if I weren't stunned at his (Chris Richardson) poor taste…he invoked the following pity-plea '...but I do... I do... my heart and prayers go out to Virginia Tech blah blah blah...' Even Simon rolled his eyes at the audacity of it”
What kind of heartless bastard does this?

Roger, your conclusion that Simon is a heartless bastard doesn't logically follow. Ignoring the facts (namely he has stated he wasn't rolling his eyes at the comment; that his eye rolling was unrelated), he has every right as a free-thinking individual to not want his show (a SINGING and ENTERTAINMENT show) to allude to outside events. TV viewers, like sports fans, watch to get away from the rest of the world (escapism).

It was obvious he was not eye rolling over the V-Tech condolence.
Most of you Idol fans should know that after years of listening to Paula's prattling babble that eye rolling is a reflex action. I know that I needed a new eyeglass prescription from all the eyerolling I do whenever she praises the singers who are terrible.

You want to know who the REAL heartless bastard was last night? Chris Richardson. Why? That guy used the shooting as a shield for his cruddy singing. Instead of people grilling Simon for his eyes rolling (which he has since cleared up), why aren't they panning Chris for his obvious cheap tactic to garner votes?
Roger, the guy you quoted had it right.

Yo, BGDC (2), I'll bet dollars to donuts that your not American. Probably Canadian. Am I right? Your insensitive remarks are exactly the kind of crap so many Canadians like to spew whenever America suffers tragedy. One Canadian Green Party candidate wrote after 9/11 that he thought it was "beautiful" when the second WTC tower collapsed.
Hey buster, AI isn't aimed at "the rest of the world" as you seem to think. It's an AMERICAN show, aimed at an American audience, much of which was grieving last night. So BUTT the hell out!

I agree with you that bgdc's comments were way out of line, but two wrongs don't make a right. Please don't generalize about a few bad apples in Canada and mistakenly slander the whole country. I recall an American extremist who described the Oklahoma City bombing as "beautiful" as well. Warped minds cross all national boundaries. And please don't forget that Canadians are fighting and dying in Afghanistan too. Their numbers are smaller but their lives are just as precious.
To bgdc: whether you're Canadian or not, you should be ashamed of yourself for being so insensitive. People of all nations should feel outrage and sympathy in response to what happened at VT. Please do the right thing and apologize.

Yeah, Sonny, you have some soldiers in Afghanisatan, and most of your Canadian political parties want to pull them out ASAP. Be honest. You know what I'm saying is true, anti-Americanism runs amok in Canada.
If, as you say, some American nutcase calls murdering Americans "beautiful", well, that really enrages me. But when foreigners say it, like your Canadian Green Party guy, well, excuse me, but I have every right to be just as pissed.
You are right about one thing, though. BGDC should be ashamed of himself, and apologize.

Simon WAS NOT disrespecting Virginia Tech. The tape they showed tonight says it all -- he was busy talking to Paula, had no idea what nasal twang was saying at the time. So lay off Simon-haters, you're all wt this time.
And Randy (18) is right.
