Lost character flashbacks: Part nine

Yunjin KimABC has posted another set of Lost flashback videos. This week, we revisit the back stories of Sun and Jin, Hurley, Kate, and Charlie. We are almost through all the major characters' flashbacks, and I hope that more of the supporting characters' back stories will be shown soon.

The fourth Sun and Jin video examines the couple's married life. After the wedding, Jin promises Sun that they will get a real honeymoon someday. Mr. Paik promotes Jin to a position as his "special assistant," asking him to send a message to the Secretary for Environmental Safety. When Jin arrives at the Secretary's home, the man is clearly terrified of him. Jin merely relays Paik's verbal message, and the Secretary is so relieved he gives Jin his daughter's puppy. Jin gives the dog to Sun, who is upset about Jin's busy work schedule.

Hurley's third flashback focuses on the events of "Everybody Hates Hugo." The infamous lottery numbers are announced, and Hurley gives himself one last normal day. He goes to work at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack, but abruptly quits when Randy confronts him about stealing chicken. His best friend, Johnny, quits as well, and they spend the day together. While listening to Driveshaft at a local music store, Hurley finally asks his longtime crush, Starla, out on a date.

The Kate flashbacks are reaching an end, since this video was set in Australia. Farmer Ray Mullen discovers Kate sleeping in his barn and offers her breakfast. Kate pretends that she is a Canadian named Annie, and accepts a job working on Mullen's farm. After catching Kate trying to leave in the middle of the night, Mullen convinces her to stay until the next morning. Mullen promises to give Kate a ride to the train station.

Charlie's video continues with the events of "Homecoming." In serious withdrawal, a sick Charlie tries to prepare for his first day of work as a copier salesman. At the last minute, he steals the Churchill cigarette case. Charlie still tries to get through the workday, fumbling around during his sales presentation. He eventually, vomits into the copier, and an ambulance is called for him. Later, we learn that the paramedics found the cigarette case and returned it to Lucy. Charlie shows up at Lucy's home, where she asks him why he took the job. He says that he wanted to be respectable and show that he could take care of her. Before closing the door, Lucy tells Charlie that he will never take care of anyone.

The flashback videos will be available every week until the Lost season finale in May. Check back each week for another set of recaps!
