(S01E01/S01E02) To be honest, I was sold on this one long before we finally got a look at what the Drive team has been working on all this time. I count myself as a Tim Minear fan, so his involvement was enough to get me interested. Add in a cast including Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Melanie Lynskey (Two And A Half Men), Kevin Alejandro (Sleeper Cell), Kristin Lehman (Tilt), Dylan Baker (The Book Of Daniel), and Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow), and you really have something.
So it all sounded great on paper, how did it play out? Even setting aside my penchant for Minear stuff, I thought this was some pretty good television. Right from the start the show established a look, and a pace, that draws you in to this strange new world. The quick vignettes introducing us to Alex, Wendy, and Winston were a nice way to get a bunch of exposition out there in an intriguing way. The "Google Earth" style transitions were very slick as well.
It's worth noting the appearance of Richard Brooks (Law & Order) as the detective that interviewed Alex. His was one of a very nice string of guest spots that gave the premiere a nice boost. He also has a little history with Minear, having played Jubal Early on Firefly. He shares that Minear connection with Beth Grant (Jericho). She was Pat, the waitress that encouraged Wendy to eliminate Ivy. She also had a guest spot on Wonderfalls.
Patrick Fischler (Nash Bridges) is another Minear alum, having appeared on Angel. I always think of him as Pepe though. Paul Ben-Victor (The Invisible Man), as the truck driver, was another welcome surprise. The idea that anyone in any scene could be working for the sponsors of the race is interesting. I'm not sure whether we will see some of these same players show up again, or continue getting a steady stream of mysterious strangers. But that's for the coming weeks, for now let's look at these two episodes.
I especially liked how Alex missed orientation. Aside from just being a funny scene, "Mr. Tully, the PowerPoint is put away..." it also put Alex in exactly the same spot as all of us. He has no idea what is going on, and neither do we. That wasn't the best Alex moment of the night though. That one would be when Corinna asked, "I guess the real question is, who are you?" It's not a death defying car chase, or a wrench to the face, but it does put a pin in just what it is that will keep me coming back for more of this one. I want to know what's up with Alex. He's not just a gardener.
It's a tricky bit of business doing a show like this. You have to set up an intriguing mystery in order to gain the interest of the audience, but solving that mystery risks losing their interest. The trick is in balancing the small mysteries that can be solved with the big ones that take more time. That's something that I thought they got right here.
I suspect that the mystery about what is so special about Alex that someone went to all this trouble is going to be one that takes a while. In the meantime though, we found out about Corinna's parents and her history with the race, Winston's father, and John's terminal illness. They also set up a couple more mysteries that offer potential. I'm really curious to learn more about Wendy's husband Richard, seeing just how Sam ended up with Cindy Williams (Laverne & Shirley), and what is up with Ellie (Mircea Monroe) and deleting the phone messages.
The big reveal that Corinna was the little girl from the race 27 years ago wasn't really much of a surprise. The 27 years, and the fact that it was a blond girl were some really big clues. It was still a very good scene, as it reinforced the mystery surrounding Alex. The fact that Allan couldn't do anything to Alex says a lot about where they both stand. That can't be the last we'll see of Allan either. You don't just get to hit a guy in the face repeatedly, with a wrench and a shovel no less, and have him go away. I look forward to his return.
On the other hand, the video of Kathryn with the truck driver did surprise me. When he mentioned having something in the back for Alex I thought he was going to have Karina tied up back there. When that didn't pan out I dismissed it as cryptic language for the sake of mood. My mistake. It made for a very creepy reveal. Ben-Victor just looked menacing on the phone.
So, overall, some pretty good story to kick this whole thing off. And that's just part of the equation. There was also a lot of really great stunt work. The Alex/Allan, Winston/John, and Alex/Winston car race/chase scenes were all very well done. As was the crash scene with Karina's parents. Along with the driving and crashing it is all edited together very nicely. As cool as all of it was though, it's also the source of my one complaint for the premiere. Those exciting car races are a breeding ground for continuity errors. Watch the bumper on Alex's truck during the scene with Allan, or his headlight and Winston's taillight in their scene.
All things considered, great action, a nice opening to the story, and a fantastic slate of guest stars. It was even better than I thought it would be. I'm giving it a 6, out of 7. Episode three is Monday night, which will be the regular slot for the show. At least until Fox moves it to Friday... and cancels it... and we have to revolt all over again.

I was going to watch this, but after getting into Black Donnellys and Andy Barker, I can't handle getting into another show that will probably not make it to next year. I wish they had premiered this about a month ago.

That show had to set a record for the most times one person got knocked unconscious. Wow that guy took a beating.

Overall, the show had a promising start. It had excellent actors, great action sequences, and a fair amount of suspense and mystery. I wonder how they will keep up the premise if the show returns for another season (a new race with new participants?).
However, I did have one small problem... and it is nitpicking, but in a funny way. I know the show is filmed out west... but really... I saw HUGE MOUNTAIN RANGES in the periphery several times during the scenes where the teams are supposedly driving through the Florida Keys and Southern Florida! Yikes! :-)

I decided that any Tim Minnear show gets a free pass from criticism for a few episodes. That's fortunate for this show, because otherwise I'd be laying into it. I don't mind buying into the fantasy that cars could be racing for some unknown illegal and obviously evil organization (like Halliburton or worse, Greenpeace) but I will insist that there's some sort of story with my adventure.
I'm happy that Nathan Fillion has been given something to do, but I'm afraid that hitting the viewers over the head with their emotional baggage is worse than clunking the flash drive chasing guy in the head 15 times in one show.
Otherwise this ends up turning into "The Amazing Race" with guns...

(Look at the picture you posted. Change their clothing and it looks like a scene from Firefly.)
So "they" whoever they are, have a lot going on. They somehow pick all the racers, kidnap people, set up murders (and basically want to kill off racers if the flashback is any indication) and keep an eye on all the racers during the race, and give people the chance to win $32 million. Huh??? (I assume "they" somehow make money off this??)
It's on FOX so they will probably keep it for a while, but really when can this show go? It is Prison Break all over again. Do
we get all new racers next season? Does this race take years?
The show needs to pay for decent music and not use really really bad cover songs.

This show was pretty fun. I enjoyed it very much, which surely means that it is doomed. Ah, well, it should be fun while it lasts.
(Anyone else get immensely happy seeing Jubal Early in the first few scenes. I hope he comes back. That actor rules.)

LOST on wheels.
People thrown into circumstances for mysterious reasons with unknown sponsors/benefactors/evil overlords.
Don't get me wrong. I actually liked it, but just playing in the background while I was surfing the 'Net bored out of my mind.
I don't want to get attached either. Not after shows like Arrested Development, Brimstone, etc. get cancelled and shows like My Wife & Kids, According to Jim and The War At Home stay on making everyone a little bit more stupid. I've resigned myself to knowing that NOTHING good stays on TV any more. It's all recycled reality crap or rehashed family comedy that hearkens back to Family Matters.

Ugh... I thought the show was pretty awful. They are trying to mix a light action show (baywatch style action) with a suspenceful thriller and it just hurts each style by trying to blend it too much .. I'll give it another ep but I'm not hopeful.

Sorry to nitpick... it was a enjoyable show... BUT... I was watching on my DVR.. And I saw one very noticeable glitch.. Did anyone else notice when the pickup truck was racing those two brothers to the lighthouse.... Firt it would have one headlight out... then both working.. then 1 out again. Same for the brothers' car.. Their taillight is out.. then not out... MAKE UP THEIR MINDS!! It is a very noticable thing, and i can't believe no one caught it on the editing room floor. Besides, that... If the light was supposed to be out... Who would race a car like that?? That's one of the biggest things cop stop car's for..
Anyways, I'm done complaining.

I thought the show was great. It had lots of little parts where I laughed, while still having mystery. I hope this one lasts. I cried a little watching Andy Barker on Sat, he didn't even get to say good bye.

I really liked the show, but the intro credit sequence was TERRIBLE. Not only did it look pathetically cheesy, but I expect a show called Drive, which is all about a fast paced race, to have theme music was gets you worked up not puts you to sleep.

I agree with the fellow that said something about the mountain ranges in the background throughout the first two episodes. I grew up in south florida, Driving between jupiter and miami. I know those roads well.
In a large production like this show seems to be, they could have spent some money at least getting some on-site filming.
I mean, comeon. Even a casual watcher of CSI Miami knows the only landscapes in south florida are beach and swamp! (and some pine-forests sprinkled in).
That aside, you can see that the show is being lined up to be Fox's answer for lost. it was fun to watch, an i love nathan fillions style. I could do without the watered down version of Jaime Pressly (Taryn Manning) that Melanie Lynskey was forced to team up with though, she stuck out in the show like a sore thumb.

I got into the show too, and for some of the same reasons. The fast pace is fun but I just wonder if they can keep it up. I like the twists that come with the "helpful" characters and I didn't expect the twist the truck driver.

I thought the cimematography during the driving scenes was fantasic. I heard they developed a "technique" for the driving sequences (where the people weren't driving the cars on the roads filmed) and I have to admit it was pretty convincing. Gonna be hard to keep the cars dent free for continuity tho!

Eh,.. it was good, but it sure isn't Heroes or BSG.
Two things bugged me.
1. Is it really that easy to hit a guy in the head and knock him unconscious? How that guy isn't walking around with a mother of a headache I'll never know.
2. I've never been to Florida. I'm a California kid. But I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that those freeways could never be mistaken for Florida. Those are definitely southern (and maybe central valley) California freeways. Heck,.. I think I even saw a CA road sign that they didn't bother to cover up.
... but it was entertaining nonetheless.
