Animation news: an early DVD review, Woody Woodpecker, Bobby's World and more

woody woodpeckerHey kids, I've gathered up some cool animation news. Here's what's a-goin' on:

First, the second season of Ed, Edd n Eddy will be released on DVD April 24. The set doesn't include much in the way of extras, save for a behind-the-scenes segment with show creator Danny Antonucci and a "How to Draw Ed" segment. The younger kids this cartoon is geared toward probably won't care much about extras though, they'll just be happy with the thirteen full episodes.

I must admit I had only a passing familiarity with this show when I watched the DVD, but what stands out for me besides the gross gags and clever slapstick is how each episode is a kind of tribute to using one's imagination to create your own kind of fun. The kids in Ed, Edd n Eddy don't play with store-bought toys, they create entire worlds out of the old junk they find around the neighborhood. My thirteen year old self would have loved this show, and my thirty year old self appreciates the reminder of how cool it was to be led by your own wild imagination.

Speaking of my thirteen year old self, he was thrilled to find full episodes of Bobby's World online. I think these have been available for awhile, but if you didn't know, now you do.

In other DVD news, look for the release of The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection on July 24. The set will include seventy-five theatrical shorts featuring Walter Lantz's hyperactive woodpecker, not to mention Chilly Willy, Andy Panda and Oswald Rabbit. Jerry over at Cartoon Brew has more information.

Also in old cartoon character news, Felix the Cat Productions is suing the makers of the Kit Kat Clock for copyright violation. It's not quite clear why the company has decided to go after the clock company, other than the fact that the kitschy item has been gaining new popularity, and perhaps outshining the old cartoon cat.

Oh yeah, don't forget that Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters is out now. Jay Montgomery, who created some backgrounds for the movie, left me a nice comment on an earlier post. You can see his work here.

Finally, our parent company AOL has a funny new online animated series centering on a happy-go-lucky puppet and a cranky robot called Slammo and Sloshie. The duo review TV shows, but mostly they just cause chaos.
