Oprah is changing up her scheduled programming today in order to interview members of the Rutgers women's basketball team. The women were the subject of a racial and sexist slur by radio host Don Imus recently. On his show, Imus inexplicably called them "nappy-headed hos" after they lost the NCAA women's championship game. As a result, he was suspended by CBS Radio and has been fired by MSNBC.Today, coach Vivian Stringer and ten players will appear on Oprah via satellite. It's only the second time they have spoken out in response to Imus' April 4th comments. Yesterday, the coach and several players said they found Imus' comments to be hurtful and insensitive.
Does Imus also deserve a live-via-satellite interview with Oprah?

If Rutgers Women get to appear on Oprah so should Don Imus! This is beyond ridiculous and has been blown way out of proportion! Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are the RACISTS, not Don Imus! He has done so much good for men and women of all different races for years and now loses his television broadcast of his show and potentially his radio show for one stupid comment that he apolgizes and was genuinely sorry about? This makes no sense and as Jason Whitlock on AOL Sports said Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson have done nothing good for Black America and if you want to single out the problem here it is Black Men who call Black Women these names and the Rap Music Industry, but do they get subjected to the WITCH HUNT they are ensuing on Don Imus, answer NO! If Imus was a Black Man nobody would even make an issue about the comments!

And next week, the Duke LaCrosse team will appear on Oprah so they too can discuss how their lives have been changed by race issues. Right?
Right?

To say that the Rutgers women and Imus have to split time on Oprah like presidential candidates is beyond ridiculcous. Take Sharpton, Oprah, Jackson, and all the rest out of the equation. Think about it from the perspective of the Rutgers women; they are students. They aren't people like Imus with a public voice, they aren't politicians, they aren't professionals getting paid millions of dollars to be in the spotlight. They are 19 year old girls going to college and playing basketball. They are regular civilians in every sense of the word. Imus doesn't need face time on Oprah, he has a daily radio show. These young women do not. They do not have a public outlet where they can be heard. They need opportunities like this to level the playing field and to let themselves be heard as much as he does. Stop thinking about this in terms of white and black. Think about it in terms of a public figure attacking a group of very private young women who did nothing to provoke it. They deserve a chance to talk about it. Al Sharpton was not on the show, Sharon. But these girls were. If you had watched, you would have seen very real people who were hurt.

Tom WP,
Who's Sharon?
I would have thought more of these women if they had risen above the stupid comments and simply ignored them. Don't meet in the mud.
Does anyone truly believe Don Imus is a racist? I feel he is an equal opportunity offender. He gets paid, (or got paid) to spout off. I regret, for his sake, that now, all the good he has done in the past will be forgotten.

I guess this shows that there are certain groups that you can offend in the name of free speech and other groups that badmouthing will get you canned.

Racist! Maybe he was out of line, and obnoxious, stupid or whatever else you want to call him. No I wouldn't want anyone saying this about my daughter. He should listen to other CBS affiliated radio stations and whenever he hears a rap song with those words keep track and sue CBS and NBC for discrimination. That's right how can he, he's white so he can't be discriminated against.
When I was younger there used to be a rhyme"sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me" I guess that was before lawyers started telling people they can make them rich. I figure they can call me anything they want. As long as I know that it isn't me, they can kiss off.
I saw the rutger girls and I didn't see any nappy headed hoes on the team. I saw some students playing a game and doing really well for a team that wasn't expected to get as far as they did.
By the way, I didn't even know Rutgers played women basketball untill Imus put them in the spotlight. I bet if you check the genre of music and their cd's they have some with the same words.
No it wasn't politically correct.
He had no reason to direct it towards these young ladies. But I still don't think he should have been fired. Maybe he should have used some of his fund raising abilities to get the message out that this is improper and hurtful to people.
I bet not one of these girls on that team look in the mirror and say that he was correct, and they feel like Nappy headed hoe's.
I would think they look in the mirror and see intelligent students and excellent ball players.
Congrats Rutgers team.
Imus sorry bout your luck
Everybody else give it a rest and quit making such a big deal about this crap. But I guess if the media couldn't sensationalize this kind of things they wouldn't be able to bring us the news that they want to shove down our throats so we can forget the real issues of hatred and all the people getting killed because they walked on someones turf. I know in Philly all they say is number 108, 109, and 110 were recorded last night no one caught yet. Maybe if these "newsmakers" get out and watch these areas they could catch some of these shooters. Do a story on the politicians and judges that keeping letting these people go so they can kill again. But that would be biting the hands that feed them "STOCKHOLDERS"

Oh please Max. Were you just born yesterday? Black people have been discriminated against and have been treated unfairly in this country for CENTURIES. Black people have been raped, tortured, beaten, murdered, and hung to death, solely because of the color of their skin, and this has been done towards black people, not for a couple of decades, but for CENTURIES.
And you still don't get why African-Americans would make such a big deal out of a white man saying such a racist and offensive comment on the radio?

This is ridiculous. Oprah having a big love-in with the players as if they have gone through some huge trauma. Truth be told, if the media hadn't blown this whole thing out of proportion, it's doubtful they would have ever known what Imus said about them.

Where are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton's apologies for the Duke players? No one seems to remember the hatred those two RACIST were spewing when that story broke.
They have nothing but hatred for white people. People probably do not remember Jesse Jackson makeing derogatory comments about Jews? No group of people have suffered as much as they have. Where was their apology?
I suppose it's okay for black comedians to call white people crackers or honkeys? Next time I will demand that Chris Rock be fired from his studio.
So this is now a one mistake society?

Wow I guess this confirms that a lot of white men really don't get it. Do none of you even know your own history? - or do you even care?
Hearing that comment Imus made takes a woman all the way back to slavery. Black women who were slaves were forced by white men to feel like "ho's," like trash, and lesser than human. Those white slave owners raped black women almost every single day of their lives, chained them, and treated them as if they were animals.
When Imus called those college educated black women "nappy headed hoes" he made them feel lesser than human like the way slaves used to feel about themselves. Those slave owners called black women "niggers" and a million of other things as well, just to make them feel like they were nothing. That comment "nappy headed ho's" reaffirms what certain white men still feel about black women.
So in case some of you white men don't get why that comment would offend black women, now you know.

No, Tia, I don't get it. Imus didn't rape, torture, or beat anybody. He did his job. He stepped over the line. He appologized. His firing won't make up for centuries of injustices. Move forward. Quit blaming others.

Tia, you are giving this man way too much credit. He "made them feel lesser than human"? You insult a group of strong, intelligent women by assuming a negative comment could drag them back into slavery! Please! Your self-rightousness anger is misdirected. No American alive today owned slaves.

There is a reason why so many black women are upset by what he said. There is a history of racism in this country and when you grow up as a minority in this country, you automatically know you're not presented with all the same opportunities that white people have. There are a lot of black women who fight really hard and go to college and do certain things just to disprove the stereotype of what most white people still think of them today in the 21st century.
So when a white man makes a racist comment like that, black women are reminded of the racism that has affected so many black people during the civil rights movement and in slavery, especially if you're someone who really knows their history and really cares about what has happened to certain people in the past.
And Max I'm not saying that Imus raped anyone, I'm trying to explain why his comment really hit a nerve and I'm trying to explain to people why his comment really really affected people and why what he said is not something that you can just move on from after apologizing. I believe Imus knew exactly what he was saying when he said "nappy headed hos." He's a grown man. He wasn't born in the nineties where the words "ho's, bitches, and sluts" started to become more popular in our everyday culture. I grew up around a lot of black people who say the word "nigga" all the time but I made a choice not to ever use it because I feel like its a slap in the face towards the millions of black people who were called "nigger" everyday by white individuals.
So Imus made a choice - joke or not: he knew he was saying something incredibly racist when he made that comment.

I'm already sick of these whiners. Who cares about Imus anyways? By making a big deal about it, they give HIM the power to matter. Acknowledge that he's a dolt and move on. This hub bub is exactly what is wrong with America today. Peaople are taking these kinds of things WAY to seriously.

I think Don Imus was very wrong in saying what he did, but I do not think he should be fired. Punish yes, fine yes, but not fired. If this is the case than anyone who has the public eye should have to watch what they say so that they do not offend anyone. Music today is so disgusting. The language is so offensive it makes me sick.
Just a few weeks ago in the local papers in NYC (Daily News) they ripped bus drivers apart accusing them of all sorts of things such as molestation, rape and verbal and physical abuse. Well I am insulted and so is my husaband who is a bus driver. He feels that he is walking around with the scarlet letter on his back when he wears his uniform. Maybe he should take some action on this. I think our freedom of speech will be taken away sometime in the future. Again, I do think Don Imus was wrong.
