Aqua Teen movie will screen in Boston

aqua teenIf you live in the Boston area and were afraid you might miss out on the premiere of Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, you can rest easy. Despite Mayor Thomas M. Menino asking theaters not to screen the movie after the publicity stunt turned "bomb" scare that resulted in Turner paying two million in damages to the city, and the resignation of the head of Cartoon Network, local theaters have decided to go ahead and show the movie anyway.

Neither the Mayor's office nor local authorities have commented on the theaters' decision to screen the movie, and as the article reads, a complete ban would probably just result in more publicity for the film, which wasn't what Menino was looking for. It sounds to me like Menino made a request, the theaters denied it, and Aqua Teen fans will get to see their movie. Menino had every right to ask, as he did, that the film not be screened, and in turn, the theaters have the right to show whatever movie they want.

In the aftermath of this Boston kerfuffle, what will be most interesting is the box office totals after the movie premieres. I can't see this movie getting huge returns, not because it's bad (I haven't seen it, how would I know?), but because it's the kind of cult phenomenon whose fanbase is a mile wide, but an inch deep.
