(Update 4/12/07 5:00 PM: CBS Radio has also fired Don Imus. Details are here.)Just heard a statement read on tonight's NBC Nightly News that MSNBC has decided to stop simulcasting Don Imus' WFAN radio show, Imus in the Morning, starting immediately. They had previously announced that they were going along with CBS Radio's two-week suspension of the talk show host, but after re-evaluating what they called an "ongoing review process" and conducting "many conversations with our own employees," NBC News decided to end the simulcast permanently. The entire press statement is after the jump.
This isn't completely unexpected, given the moral outrage over Imus' comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team. Of course, the big question is this: will CBS Radio also swing the ax? It's entirely possible, if only to keep themselves from looking bad compared to their NBC counterparts. Since I've never been a big Imus fan, I won't exactly be sad to see him go. But I still wonder if the punishment fits the crime. What do you folks think? Let me know in the comments.
NBC News statement:
"Effective immediately, MSNBC will no longer simulcast the "Imus in the Morning" radio program. This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees. What matters to us most is that the men and women of NBC Universal have confidence in the values we have set for this company. This is the only decision that makes that possible. Once again, we apologize to the women of the Rutgers basketball team and to our viewers. We deeply regret the pain this incident has caused."

Not really suprised here, corporate America has about as much backbone as a jellyfish. But I suppose the final nail was the corporate sponsers backing out.
I hate to say it, but the I-Man should pull a Stern and go on Sirius or XM, charge a few bucks a month, and then not have to worry what our incredibly PC society has to say about him.
I think he was dead wrong to say what he did, but gees let him try to make ammends.

I not a big fan either............ but.
Why is it OK for blacks to use these phrases daily in their conversations, TV shows, and music.
Ho this, Nappy that, Nigga, etc etc, etc. Black culture wears these words out.
But let a white man say it, HATE CRIME, RACIST, FIRE HIM, BURN HIS HOME!!!!!!!!!
Sicking double standards, and more of "whitey owes us" attitude. OK for us but not you, Honkey!!!
Freedom of speech?? Not for white people.

It's overkill for sure. Imus is not a news show....he's a shock jock pure and simple.
However, having said that, Imus has offended for years and done it with impunity.
He has been able to hide his venom under the cloak of humor, but everyone's luck runs out after a while.
His number was up.........pure and simple.
Time for him to hang it up and concentrate on his good works.
I'ts probably for the best.

Over the past several days, all I've heard from Imus is how he is such a good man and does good things for people. He is now saying what was said was horrible statement. Perhaps he has the ability to bring in funds for worthy causes but a good man does not degrade others. His creditability of being a good man is lessoned by stating that Imus In the Morning is comedy thereby implying the statement was comical. Taking an about- face that is the result of outside pressures does not necessarily mean repentance.

I think IMUS had the most intelligent interviews in the Morning. I'm going to boycott NBC and the sponsors that so quickly pulled their adds. Yeah, it was stupid, but look at all the other more offensive crap on this network.

Give the man a break! And will someone please fire Al Sharpton!
Agreed the comments were un-called for but let's step out of our glass houses for a minute and remember all the stupid things we've all said and done.

He was definitely wrong to say what he did BUT he has apologized. Rosie O'donnell NEVER apologizes for anything she says and I don't see anyone complaining except maybe Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Rosie says terrible things about our president, compared Christians to Islamic terrorists, etc. but she continues to be able to run her mouth, so somebody please tell me the difference. I thought we were a country of free speech. Is it only free for Rosie and/or minorities? There is a terrible double standard here and this man will probably lose his job completely before the week is over. It really just makes me mad! Again, it was a stupid thing to say BUT these are grown women not little kids that were being pushed around and picked on. The man made one little stupid comment that I think has been completely blown out of proportion. There are terrible things going on in our world that people aren't blinking an eye about, but this thing is being talked about almost as much as the whole Anna Nicole Smith saga. I just wish our country and the media would get their priorities in order.......

I think MSNBC took the cowardly way out.Whatever happened to freedom of speech?I deplore his statement, but felt a two-weeks suspension was probably enough. What a difference a couple of decades make-I remember Jesse Jackson's statement about "Hymietown"'s barely getting an apology from him to the Jewish people offended by that remark. We are politically correcting ourselves out of existence;catering to one group of people usually is a slippery slope. What about no censorship?I did not listen to Imus, but who is next?

Imus has had a crack at everyone he feels like. I hope he feels the heat and gets ousted. He made a comment, nay tirade, about Ann Curry on NBC's TODAY show going on how ugly she was. I like Ann Curry. She's smart, savvy and a good newsperson with guts - jumping from planes for a story, etc. Meanwhile I think Imus of the crater-face should look in the mirror before HE calls anyone ugly. I Mus(t) not give him a pass. He and trash-mouth Stern are cut from the same sludge. As for Sirius, I canceled them when they gave Stern $500 mill to foul the airwaves.... and had the chutzpah to charge me for it !

I am pleased to see Imus lose MSNBC syndication. He has
been allowed to denigrate too many for far too long in far too many outlets. He believes his comments fall into the "joke" or "satire" category...I fail to see the relevance. Don't jokes have punchlines?
I do support the man's right to free speech, but his repeated offenses
continue to display thinly veiled disregard for those that are
different from him racially, sexually or politically. This is NOT
what America is about. I'm glad at least one media network has taken responsibility and shown respect for the airwaves!
I don't think this is about a "whitey owes us" attitude. There are PLENTY of black people out there protesting the continued denigration of females, black females in particular. Sadly it doesn't make major news coverage because the masses at large have Mr. Sanders attitude of exclusion. How would we feel had his nationally syndicated comments been directed at ones we loved and cared for?
We all have the right to free speech...but your right to express yourself ends where anothers right to express and respect themselves begins.
As for black people using the phrases, you're right...they do. Why do they do it? However when others take an opportunity to denigrate a group, should you jump in and help? Kick 'em because someone else did? I think that is the attitude of an opportunistic bully and a coward.
This is a nation of double standards. The constitution that proclaimed all men recipients of inalienable rights...excluded the very people on who's backs the nation was built. Interesting to see the venom spewed when those same contradictions affect a group of people used to benefiting from them.
This is NOT a whitey vs. nigga debate. This is about the ability to use our airwaves to de-humanize and denigrate others. Imus makes money so it's allowed the same way rappers make money (more than Imus!) so they are allowed too. I'm glad to see some of these hate-spewers lose their financing.

I don't think it should be okay for blacks to use the words hoo, nigger, nappy, in their rap music but when a White man uses the same words he losses his job. I think the black are more racist than any one.
Nothing happened to the black girl who acused the Duke Lacross players of rape. Their life was was on hold for a year plus it cost their familys millions of dollars.
Why is this country so submissive to the blacks.

What about all the rap songs, all the comedians both black and white that use the others race to create a joke or get a laugh. Will they be fired, suspended, or dropped from their labels, or programs as well. If it is truly wrong, then it should be wrong for everyone, not just Don Imus. We need more censorship.

Imus took a shot at the back of the mids of the young and impressionable women that struggle as it is to develop a sense of pride in accomplishment. His comments were about as insensitive as the the slave blocks and public hangings.
Think for a moment that your child may have had their moment of glory shadowed by the mouth of that degenerate individual?
Regressive? I think so, and evidently CBS & NBC thinks so as well. He even defiled the name and the character of our Nation's Poet Laureate - Maya Angelo.
How dare this poor sap to take shots at the hearts and souls of people of accomplishment.
Shock radio? How about shock firings? Tolerance is not tolerating this kind of insipid behavior.

Well I am officially done with MSNBC. They are a bunch of spineless cowards. I'm am getting sick and tired of being a second class citizen to minorities. I hear black sportscasters using racially bias commentary daily and nothing is ever done to them. Blacks can say whatever they want and nothing is ever done. As for Al Sharpton, he is worse than garbage. He ruined a mans life with his hatred towards whites and not even an apology. Jesse Jackson, and his illegitimite kids and Hymie town, is no better. They just like to stir up the racial issues. Well believe me, its stirred up, and I am sick of it. See ya MSNBC. I hope your ratings go in the tank.

I think Don was wrong with makeing the statement about the Rutgers girls, but I think he made them without malice. He was saying that they were playing rough basketball and had tattoos, and should not have had to say the other things, but since you here it every day by all the filthy rappers talking about their mommas and their proffession, he was just adding to what is said every day, but since he is White he can not say it without getting fired. So much for free speech.
I give him credit for going on Al Sharptions show and discussing it with him, who is a hypocrite and racist, and trouble maker himself.

Freedom of speech is gone? Why? One crazy old man on the radio made a stupid comment and people were offended. Complaints and protests fired up and the corporations that advertise on the show got nervous and pulled their ads. Without sponsors the show won't bring in money, so MSNBC canceled it. What part of this means free speech is gone? Let's keep this in perspective. Everyone in this country is still free to say any damn thing they want. You just have to be prepared to deal with the consequences if it upsets people.
