ABC has provided Lost fans with another behind-the-scenes video podcast. Michael Giacchino, the composer for Lost, gave ABC a tour of the scoring stage where all of the show's music is recorded. He introduced several members of the the orchestra, who provided samples of familiar background music from various episodes. Giacchino also provided the following details:
-
Unlike most TV shows, Lost's music is created by a live orchestra. Giacchino prefers to work with real musicians than with a synthesizer.
- Giacchino used to receive episode scripts when he composed the music for Alias. With Lost, he prefers to merely watch completed episodes as they arrive, in order to maintain the suspense.
- The Lost orchestra includes four trombone players, a strings section, an extensive group of percussionists, a harpist, and a pianist.
- To compose the music for each Lost episode, Giacchino watches one scene at a time. He only moves on to the next scene after the music for the preceding scene is composed.
- Giacchino will be composing the music for the next Star Trek film.
- The Lost episodes are projected in the studio while the orchestra is recording. Sometimes Giacchino notices the musicians taking a peek at the screen while they are playing, in order to preview upcoming episodes.
Another video podcast will be released in a few weeks. Viewers will get a look at a Lost mixing session with producer Bryan Burk.
