(S06E29) They certainly did cram in a lot of stuff in tonight's episode, didn't they? Wow, my head is still spinning. As much as I complain about the hour-long results show giving us way too much unnecessary filler, I felt they did their best tonight to at least keep the show entertaining. And I appreciate that, even though it may have been a bit too much.Besides, don't they know all we really want is the RESULTS. Enough with the tease. Let us have it! How many of you skipped the festivities, TiVo'd the thing, and then fast forwarded to the very end?
Me, I watched the whole thing. Of course, I had to. It's my job. But whether you watched it all, or zipped to the end, the results were the same. Someone went home tonight -- and it wasn't Sanjaya.
As many expected, Phil, Haley, and Chris were in the bottom three. There was no major upset. LaKisha was not in the bottom, as I predicted she might be. And Chris did not go home, meaning the AOL poll didn't get it right this week. In fact, Chris was sent back to safety by Ryan.
HALEY vs PHIL. Beauty and the Beast. Over 35 million votes were cast, and America chose the bald one over the hot one. It's the end of the road for Haley Scarnato, and the best damn legs on American Idol.
Was I shocked? No. It was bound to happen sooner or later. From what I can tell, Haley just wasn't as popular with the ladies as she was with the guys (hmm, I wonder why).
Phil was all smiles even before he heard the results. He was feeling just so darned "blessed" to be here. I think he was mentally preparing himself to go. And although I'm not a Philly-fan, I like his attitude. He knows he's not going to win, and he knows he's probably going soon. So every week he stays is just a gift. Good for him.
Did America get it right? Well, one by one they all have to go sooner or later. Until we get to the Top 4, does it really make a difference whether Haley goes home before Chris or Phil?
By the way, I really think Haley doesn't deserve any of the nasty names she's been called in our comments. Just because a girl shows some leg, it doesn't make her a wh*re. Why the nastiness, people? Now that she's gone, can we send her off kindly?
Other highlights (for those of you who skipped to the end and missed it):
- Ryan asked the judges their thoughts on Latin night. Randy thought the songs were really tough, but the kids did pretty good. Paula giggled. Simon admitted that he gave Sanjaya a compliment last night.
- The Final 8 performed together, singing "Bailamos" by Enrique Inglesias. I have to say that the worst pairing was that of Haley and Sanjaya. I thought Jordin's vocals stood out in the crowd. As usual, Chris looked and sounded like he was in pain.
- Because we have a lot more time tonight, we got to see some behind-the-scenes with J.Lo and the contestants. Jennifer told the contestants, "If you can make people feel something when you sing, that's the most important thing."
- Jennifer Lopez performed the song "Que Hiciste" completely in Spanish. When she first started singing, I had a flashback to Charo singing on the Love Boat. Hoochie Koochie. I have no idea what Jenn was singing, but she looked really pissed off. See, she knows how to get into a song, and feel the passion. She also looked muy caliente. She is, after all, a movie star with charisma coming out the wazoo. Surprisingly, the ex-Fly Girl didn't do too much dancing.
- After her performance, Ryan chatted with J.Lo in a cloud of smoke left behind by the pyrotechnics. J.Lo said she understands the pressure the contestants are under to "come up here and do what they do each week." She also said that she didn't agree with all the judges' feedback. She apparently comes from the "Paula school of criticism." Jenny-from-the-block believes in accentuating the positive. "Not that we don't need our Simon," she chirped. "Just in doses" Ryan chimed in.
- Hey, just so you know, J.Lo's new CD is in stores now. Doesn't anyone do the show just for the heck of it, and not to promote a CD? Yeah, I didn't think so.
- Eva Longoria and Sharon Osbourne were in audience.
- Idol Challenge: Which American Idol finalist performed with Meatloaf during last year's finale? Yamin, McPhee, or Taylor Hacks?
- Ryan was taped at the Farmer's Market getting feedback on last night's show. Blah blah blah. Wow, this was an obvious time filler. Ryan's actually pretty good at interacting with people, but the segment truly wasn't necessary, unless you're trying to kill time.
- Akon was back for a performance without Gwen Stefani. He sang "Don't Matter." Apparently, he's big with the kids. Okay, I admit it, I like him too. I still can't get the "Woo Hoos/Wee Hoos" out of my head since he performed with Gwen. I bet he'll be selling a lot of digital downloads tomorrow. And ain't that what this show is about? Exposure, Exposure, Exposure.
- The Ford music video featured the song, "Happy Together" and a morphing concept that was cutting edge in 1991 when Michael Jackson used it in his Black or White video, but now is just dated. And do we really want to see Sanjaya morph into Doolittle? Creepy.
- Idol Gives Back: The money keeps rolling in. News Corporation (the very generic-sounding parent company of FOX) pledged $5 million. Ryan tells us the event will have comedy, insight into Simon's heart, and Celine Dion (sounds like a neat idea for a sitcom on FOX).
- In video of Simon in Africa, one of the kids hands Simon a drawing. It's rather odd, because the kid drew Simon with boobies. "Even in Africa, they think you need a bra," Ryan says, causing Simon to turn red. Did Ryan just mock Simon's man-boobs in front of 28 million people? Oh, snap!
- The Idol editors spliced together some footage from the auditions, so that it appears as if Tony Bennett is trying out for Idol. The cranky Simon tells him, "You are probably the worst we've had today." Tony was sporting his bright yellow Realtor jacket in the segment. It was a cute clip, but hard to explain here.
Next Week: Martina McBride and Country Music -- Sanjaya in a cowboy hat! I can't wait.

you know what's funny about this? Haley is the best one to be a successful pop icon. She isn't the most talented but she's clearly the hottest and she can sing well enough to get by. Think about it. Britney and Christina weren't the most talented singers out there but they got pretty popular shaking their moneymakers.

I thought JLO sucked big time! She was horrible-She looked pissed off and contispated. I won der if she even knows what the words mean since she does not speak spanish fluently. Of course she was promoting her CD-that's the only reason why she was there. Like she would care about American Idol. And she was giving advice? So long Haley-hopefully Jordin will win.

Darn. . .I was kinda hoping that Sanjaya just might actually get voted off tonight. Sanjaya's gone a long way and I just realized that he might actually go far on this competition. I don't want to say how far because I just refuse to think about it. I remember the days when all thought he'd be voted off on the spot. Good ole days. When will Sanjaya put us out of our misery?!?!?!? and i think Simon's comment was needed to put Haley in check. At least she knows what we think when she struts her stuff on stage. Too bad she got voted off before she could change our minds about her and right before the artist she wanted to work with most. Haley was the last lady that didn't embody the whole diva status. that leaves the diva votes to be divided between the 3 of them, which could cause some trouble. Hopefully Blake will just win this whole thing with Jordin as runner-up.

It was time for Hot Pants to go. But Sanjaya should have been gone weeks ago. It is getting a little scary to think he may cause someone like Jordin, Blake or Melinda to be shown the door first. More great results recap at http://dontgetmestarted-lindasharp.typepad.com/

Are you really saying Christina Aguilera is not that talented? I'm no fan of modern pop, but seriously eh?

SANJAYA WILL WIN!! and that may not be a bad thing, as long as BLAKE comes in second!!
this will give blake the integrity needed to survive post-american idol.
i like blake the best, but if he won, he'd be turned into a pop-machine which would suck!

I'm from Chile and we are 3 weeks behind, so I catch up by reading this column. I can see, just by reading a few lines, that the writer of this article does not like a particulat contestant, and I believe that a reporter should not let their personal feelings interfere with their work. I don't like how the writer describes some of the contestants in a very offensive way. I hope in the future the writer can be more open minded about their comments.
Thank you, and please forgive my English. I'm still learning.

I am sick to death of hearing how Sanjaya needs to go or he should have been gone weeks ago, and I don't even watch this stupid show.
People get a grip. If you are voted into the top 12 you should be good enough to win the whole show. The judges allowed Sanjaya to make it this far if they thought he sucked he never should have made it to HollyWood but the sad truth is this, most people wouldn't watch if they didn't have someone to make fun of and or be the but of every joke.
I guess it's no fun to see 12 outstanding singers fight for the title of American Idol, they have to throw in some losers just for sport.

hi everyone, i dont think its fair that haley got the boot before sanjaya or phil or for that matter the "powerhouse" singers. yes, melinda and lakisha have great voices but they are not american idol material- why do i feel like i'm the only one thinking that? do u honestly see thousands of kids buying either of their cds? and ur right, haley's recording voice is unbelievable!! if someone handed me a cd of her singing i could swear its some major star singing. the judges were so mean and obnoxious to her-many of the comments were completely uncalled for. lets face the facts-she is sweet, pretty and has a awesome voice and a great body- if any other of the women on that show this year had her body they would be wearing awesome clothes too. simon is a hypocrite on this topic-first she has great legs and he checks her out and then commments on her lack of clothes?? come on that is not cool. i wish her the best of luck and honestly am a tad annoyed with this season already...cant wait to see her on tour and i hope everyones love for her actually gets to her because she deserves to know she has a great voice and did have class while on there. people seem to get intimidated when someone looks so put together and perfect all the time. please lets give her the credit she is due- Haley, you were awesome and i was terribly sad to see u go...keep smiling

Haley clearly isn't the best so it's fine that she goes now. But I do think the judges were a little over the top in continually saying her only value was her appearance (even Paula was doing that). I felt bad for her being insulted like that week after week.
To #1, Britney and many other pop stars are certainly sub-par singers. But you're totally offbase about Christina. Her tremendous voice is well-recognized. Along with Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, she's an incredible singer whose image and antics often get in the way of real talent.

for the record i was about to break my tv so that i dont have to see sanjaya anymore, and blake should get over his ego, even if he is considered "mr. contemparary" and cool- he pisses me off, and rubs me the wrong way- why is he so cocky?? chris seems cool but hes not always in his comfort zone and u can tell. last night was not as hot a show as the AI producers would have liked it to have been. i feel bad for all of them- why in heavens name are they making these poor kids jump through hoops that are not jumpable?? most professional singers wouldve had a hellish time last night- latin is something ur born with, u cant make urself it. anyway the only person who leaves a good taste in my mouth at this point is jordin-she seems sincere and can sing. i think america let a hot one go tonight- out of all of the women she was the most pop star capable plus i will say it again and again- she has a phenomenal recording voice!! i hope some smart record company snaps her up and makes her a huge star. and i agree with liz- whats with all the negativity??? i think some people owe Haley a apology- starting with simon and ending with all the nasty people on various blogs- lets show her the love she deserves-put it this way- shes no longer a threat those still on, so just respect the girl and hand her credit for how she held herself and for how far she came. she seems genuinely nice and i and all her fans wish her the best of luck... cant wait to see u on tour....debbie

It doesn't matter when people go home now. Haley being sent home is not a surprise. Even Sanjaya remaining isn't a surprise any longer.
I do believe that the top 3 contestants should be LaKisha, Jordin and Melinda. I thought LaKisha was going to be the next American Idol, but after seeing her perform week after week I now feel she is a one trick pony. She can only sing one type of music. The same goes for Melinda too. I did not think Melinda's performance of Sway had any Latin feel whatsoever. None of them did for that matter. Although these two have fantastic voices, they only can sing one type of music. Maybe in the coming weeks they will show something different, especially since it is country week next week. But why do I have a feeling one of them will pick Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You, and sing it like Whitney Houston.
For whatever the reason may be, every person of Indian decent in America (of which there are many), or every Nambla member (again of which there are many,) every teeny bopper (of which there are way too many,) or people who follow vote-for-the-worst, Sanjaya will remain week after week. Personally I do not like him at all. I do not see any physical attraction to him whatsoever. I do not think he can sing well either. The one thing that he has going for him is that he is a very good performer. He is very entertaining. A person does not need a good voice to be a good entertainer. There are certainly many people out there who can not sing well but manage to sell millions of cds.
I am begining to think Jordin deserves to win. She has improved week after week, and can sing almost any style of music, and sing it well. But there are still 7 weeks to go. Only time will tell. With Sanjaya making it this far, it only goes to show that anything can happen. I hate to type it, but even Sanjaya can win. God forbid

People are voting for Sanjaya to see if Simon makes good on his promise to quit the show if he wins (and also to ruin the so-called "integrity" of AI). FOX probably doesn't have any quibble with Sanjaya staying on for as long as possible, at least for now -- his persistent presence is probably helping to keep the ratings up.

I'm glad Haley's gone, there are just too many other girls who look, dress, and unfortunately, sing like her trying to make it in the music biz these days. If they're lucky, they get to be a one-hit wonder or tabloid fodder, we've seen them all before, dime a dozen. She was nothing special, she did not stand out, and she got sent home like she should have been weeks ago only because I felt she was the weakest of the female singers, I even thought at times she was worse than Sanjaya and he's definitely not that great, in spite of his better performance the previous night. Now I can only hope that Country Week won't be as bad as Latin Night....

Haley is cute. I personally don't think she needs so much makeup. Her eyes just looked too overdone for both the performance and results shows. She had her moments. If the Don Imus story wasn't all over the news right now, Simon's comment to her could be getting a lot more attention. Curiously, she wore pants Wednesday. Coincidence?

I think it is a disgrace that Sanjaya is still on. If he should win I will not watch american idol again. People are making a farce of the show. Next year idol needs to change things up so this never happens again. The judges need to make the final decisions except the last few shows. All the good singers are being voted off to keep sanjaya in the running, what a mess. End this horrible singer now. This has been the worse season ever.

Well, it's not a surprise that Haley is out ... I'm certainly not crying about it.
But on to other obsevations: did anyone notice that even in the Ford commercial ... er ... music video ... Lakisha doesn't smile? If that girl doesn't start showing some happy face when she's singing, she's going to be voted out sooner rather than later. I have a hard time watching her because she always has such a dour look on her face. She needs to lighten up!

I'm glad Haley is gone, because really, she just can't sing. I just wish she would have thought more of herself than to perform wearing the shortest shorts ever made and a see-through top, and that harsh red lipstick. I know she wanted to continue on the show, but I would have thought more of her if she would have presented herself with a little more dignity, rather than trying the T&A route of staying on. She HAD to know she would never win, so why not preserve what dignity you can and go out with your head held high, instead of turning the show into Steetcorner Idol?

Has anyone good been voted off before Sanjaya?
Not so fast--don't give me "Gina"!
I mean somebody who is really a contender to WIN, not just get to the final 6, 5, 4, etc.
The answer is no, so I'd hardly say that Sanjaya being around is ruining everything.
I do predict he'll go before LaKisha, and that will be a shocker to some, but come on; does anyone expect LaKisha to win? She is a great singer, but like others have mentioned she is a very niche singer and does not have the main stream pop appeal to actually win a content like this.
But as far as being a Blake or a Jordin? I wouldn't hold my breath.
Having him on the show must have Fox ecstatic, because without him it would often be a rather boring show. A lot of people are in it this year who just really aren't that talented.
Jennifer Hudson got voted off early and it was an outrage, but of the remaining contestants this year can you really even see the #2 or #3 contestant getting half as famous as Jennifer?
I wouldn't be surprised if someone at Fox wasn't cutting Howard Stern a check to continue promoting Vote For the Worst.
It won't let him win, but it will keep him in just enough to add some excitement while some of the struggling singers are still in.
