(S06E28) So who exactly thought a Latin-themed night was a good idea for American Idol? I fully expected tonight's performances to be painful. However, I really didn't expect Sanjaya to sing in Spanish and give one of the better performances of the night. Unbelievable. Just when you think Idol has no more surprises left, you witness something truly shocking. Jennifer Lopez, looking rather svelte, took time out from her busy schedule to mentor the finalists and help them find the passion in the Latin-themed music. Unfortunately, not many of them truly found their inner Latin beat. J.Lo excitedly gushed that she watches American Idol at home, and she does have her favorites. Yeah, so we've heard.
The cast of Drive, and Mickey Dolenz are in the house to watch our Top 8 fight to keep their spots in the competition. And before the hour is up, we'll learn that LaKisha tried out for Idol to make a better life for her daughter, and Jordin loves 80s music. We'll also hear a story about a cow named Simon.
The night starts off with the heavy hitters batting first.
1. MELINDA -- She sings "Sway." J.Lo tells her to go out on stage with the intention that she's the sexiest, sultriest thing around. Mindy Doo admits that will be a challenge, because she is "so not sexy." Her dress is much more flattering this week, making her look longer and leaner in her midsection. But her hair? Is that one of the bad wigs from Dreamgirls? Randy says another "solid performance." He liked it. Paula calls it "very sultry, very smooth" and a "subtle" performance. Simon says "it had to happen -- I didn't like it." He found it very "cabaret, lazy, and wooden." He thinks she's better than that. Melinda is happy because Simon wanted something bad to say about her and he got the chance. I agree, it wasn't her best, and certainly wasn't sultry.
2. LaKISHA -- She sings Gloria Estefan's "Conga", and J.Lo helps her pronounce it with Latin-flavor. And rather than give Kiki singing tips (It's not like she's going to listen anyway), Jennifer gives her some dancing tips. LaKisha comes out with overflowing cleavage that is starting to distract from the singing, especially since she's moving around tonight. The band sounds really good, but LaKisha just isn't feeling the music. She looks uncomfortable. Randy loves that Kiki was having a good time, and made it her own. He calls it "hot." Paula says LaKisha looks lovely, but she didn't feel it as much as Randy. Paula thinks it was a "safe" performance. Simon actually agrees with Paula. He says even though LaKisha was having fun, he isn't sure how much fun the people at home had (not much, Simon). Plus, he didn't think the dancing was very good.
3. CHRIS -- He sings "Smooth" by Santana. Again, J. Lo helps with the Spanish pronunciation. I have never wanted to turn down the sound, as much as I do listening to Chris murder one of my favorite songs. Poor Rob Thomas. Randy thinks he did a really good job, and calls it "really cool." Randy likes the runs at the end. Paula calls it a "hot, hot performance." She thinks Chris is sexy. Simon says it wasn't the best vocal he's ever heard, but he preferred the performance to the first two. I disagree with the judges completely. I cannot stand those whiny and annoying vocal runs. That was painful. And the guy sings like he's in pain too. Honestly, he's a lot cuter with the sound turned down.
4. HALEY -- She sings "Turn the Beat Around." J.Lo brings Blake in the room to give Haley a beat. J.Lo says Haley's going to have to "throw the song at people" if she wants to win this week. But we know, and Haley knows, what her real assets are, which is why she comes out wearing the shortest shorts possible. She also looks a little like Jennifer Lopez tonight. And yes, she's having fun with the song, but what's with all the weird faces? Randy calls it "really karaoke." Paula says it is a fun song, and she "had fun up there." Simon thinks Haley is smart to wear the least amount of clothes possible. That's all she can do, he says, and "have fun." He also felt the vocals were rushed. I don't love Haley, but the judges do seem to be a bit harsh with her.
5. PHIL -- He sings Santana's "Maria, Maria." Jenny tells him to think of somebody while singing the song. Then she claims he gave her "goose pimples." Ew. The good news is, we don't have to look at Phil's shiny bald head. The bad news is that we have to look at the dorky hat. As usual, his voice is inconsistent -- good in some places, cracking in others. Randy agrees with Jennifer that Phil didn't quite connect with the passion of the song. Paula thinks it was a good vocal. Simon found no originality, and calls it "a bit lifeless" and "flat." Simon says there is "nothing to get positive or excited about." Phil takes his lumps, and tells Simon that his daughter has a stuffed cow that she named Simon Cow. Okay, that's kind of cute.
6. JORDIN -- She sings Gloria Estefan's "The Rhythm is Gonna Get You." J.Lo says Jordin's voice is so sweet, and reminds her of Michael Jackson. Jennifer shows her how to move her body to the rhythm of the song. I'm disappointed because I really thought Jordin was going to pick a Selena song. Randy says she has the "Yo Factor on blast." Paula loves that she is "authentic" and "adorable." Simon feels the same he's felt all night -- it was only an okay performance. He's frustrated tonight. I hear you, Simon. But what did you expect on Latin-themed night? If only you had let Perla, the Shakira-clone, through during Hollywood Week.
7. BLAKE -- He sings "I Need to Know" by Mr. J.Lo (Marc Anthony). Jenny tries to get Blake into the passion of the song. Is it just the Latin music or is it hot in here? Blake is sweating up a storm on stage. When I close my eyes, I like what I hear. But when I look in Blake's eyes, I can't find any emotion. Randy thinks it's the "best song choice of the night." He calls it a "hot performance." Paula says, "it captured the essence of who you are." Simon calls it "the best performance so far." Does he mean tonight or ever? Because it was the best tonight, but not ever. Still, Blake is going to sail on through after tonight's performance.
8. SANJAYA -- He chooses a Spanish song, "Besame Mucho," and J.Lo says she loves him. She tells him to not to rush the ending. She thinks it's a good song choice for Sanji, and Jenn believes that Simon might be impressed. Sanjaya sits on the stool, sporting some subdued curls, and facial hair. He looks a little less feminine, and even more like that dude in Nacho Libre. And I agree with Jenny-from-the-block. The song works for Sanjaya. Randy calls him one of the smartest contestants he has ever met. Randy says, "that was actually really good." Paula calls it "smooth" and "very, very nice." Simon snarks that he couldn't understand a word of it, Sanjaya sang like a fourteen year-old, and "I'm going to hate myself for this -- it wasn't horrible."
So we did have some surprises tonight. Our powerhouse ladies didn't do so well with the Latin beat. And Sanjaya finally found a song he could sink his teeth into.
Who's Going Home? Haley and Phil are definitely in the bottom three. I'd personally like to see Chris join them or even go home (but he has his many fans). I also think there could be a surprise tomorrow. I think LaKisha might be in the bottom three for the first time. Melinda, Jordin, Blake, and Sanjaya, are most likely safe.
Tomorrow: Live Results Show #8 and Jennifer Lopez takes the stage.
Plus, tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Idol Gives Back event.

At least it wasn't just me not impressed with Chris Richardson's performance. And, I thought Sanjaya did well. Shoot me now and put me out of my misery.
In my own blog, I likened the night to Billy Crystal's "white man's overbite" in 'When Harry Met Sally.'

Never ever do Latin night again! It was horrible! Could be the worst night this season.
Melinda was normally good.
Lakisha was blah and the fact Phala didn't agree with "Da Dog" and with Simon scared me to death!
Chris was worse than Sanjaya normaly is.
Haley is a whore, I hope she gets a STD covered boot up her ass.
Phil was surprisingly good, not great but better than others tonight.
Jordan was blah.
Blake was fun, but I'm biased.
Sanjaya... singing in Spanish... damn... just damn... And sadly because all the others were so bad he could be near the top this week because of his singning! *I feel sick.*
Blah week, Jo-Lo is a bad singer, bad actor, and bad dancer, huge mistake. I'm pissed that Bones isn't on because they need to make the results show longer. That's BS.

I've always thought that Dean Martin did the best version of Besame Mucho I'd ever be likely to hear.
And tonight, after hearing Sanjy's take? Dino's title is safe.

Actually Chris R wasn't 1/2 bad. Only time I've ever had something nice to say about the guys. Of course I just loved Haley's performance. She is a natural performer. I had to turn it off after Haley though. I am always afraid of what will come next (read that to mean Sanjaya)

I dont know what idol show you guys watched but I think Chris was pretty good and haley and phil sucked. The three power houses are just that they do the same thing everyweek especially ms.dolittle i have yet to see her sing something different. It is always a long winding story she is telling. Sanjaya is the surprise he actually sang and sang ok, and in spanish. Blake definatly was the winner of the night.

This night definitely didn't wow me. Actually none of the contestants wowed me.
Melinda and LaKisha did well.
Chris R. did not do that song justice.
Haley did her normal "no pants" thing.
Jordin sang okay, but that song did nothing for her.
Blake did the best of the night.
Phil still creeps me out, and he shouts a lot.
Sanjaya grew some facial hair.
Overall a bad night. Meh.

Haley sucked and so did Phil. Hopefully one of these will be leaving. I would rather watch Sanjaya for a couple more weeks than one of these two. I am trying not to like Blake for some reason, but after the show I had to send in a couple of votes for him. His performance was the best, and I REALLY hated that it was. I want Melinda to be the best every week!! She was still second, and (sorry to those who hate him) Sanjaya gave the third best performance of the night! Those are the three that received votes from me!! I voted based on performance. Hopefully Chris will be in the bottom three because his singing is always terrible. I am guessing that Phil will be the one to leave tomorrow night.

Worst night so far -- I didn't vote for anyone for the first time this season.
The next three weeks are going to be torturous. Let's just get rid of Chris, Phil and Haley and get down to business.

well sanjaya proves he deserves to be there tonight, not because he did an AMAZING performance, but because he is just as good as all the other contestants this year.
its a really really bad year, and sanjaya is only 1 of the reasons, there were some bad choices by the judges.
i feel the only talented one is blake, as he does something different and shows true musical talent, the rest of the bunch are just average.
lakisha and melinda, although have excellent voices, lack the originality, charisma, personality to be a star!

Melinda will be a star even if she is voted off tomorrow. Too many people love her already!! She will be more successful than Ruben, Fantasia, and Taylor. She will have a cd out this time next year and it will sell....you just wait and see, Stigmata....

I was disappointed. I totally expected Sanjaya to do Ricky Martin's 'She bangs'...along with the dance moves.
I was also surprised that no one did exceptionally well tonight.
I am still rooting for Jordin, she's still my favorite. I do think, however, that she needs help with her wardrobe.

OK, time to chime in on the latest Idol trainwreck.
First, I agree, when I heard it was Latin night, I could only respond "what the f%& are they thinking?"
However, there actually was a benefit to latin night, it showed once again that these singers are blah, bland and boring and have no soul and no emotion.
That said, I am glad to know that Gloria Estefan is the only person they could all come up with, I mean come on, she is weak "latin-tinged" 80s pop - granted paula Abdul makes her look good, but let's be real. 3 Estefans and 2 Santana's?
I was praying for somebody to choose something different - Shakira, anyone? I was actually hoping Sanjaya would come out in a navel baring shirt and hula dance while singing "Hips don't lie".
OK, on to the performances.
Melinda: surprise surprise, Melinda sings the oldest song of the bunch. Good vocal as usual, she looked better then usual, but getting bored.
Lakisha: Obviously asked Haley for some styling tips of the pole-dancing famous tonight. I thought she started out strong, but then she went into autopilot and the performance was just very limp. I think it is a good thing she wore that dress, because otherwise she may be in danger of bottom 3 this week. Why? Same old, same old combined with uninspired performance, combined with the fact that, lets face it, she aint pretty.
Chris R: I have been indifferent to Chris so far. I think some days he is on and others he is not. Not thrilled by his Timberlake wardrobe usually. Today, I was in the other room while he was singing, so I could only hear him and could not see him. Sorry, but his vocals were all over the place, he was so out of tune with the song. This was by far the worst performance of the night so far. No idea why the judges liked it. Perhaps they are drinking from Paula's glass?
Haley: What can I say? Simon nailed it on the head. Did I say Chris was the worst so far? Oh well, Haley just out-crapped him. I give her credit for her energy and her continuing ability to compensate for lack of talent with a bigger lack of clothes. Britney is probably her role model. hmmm... now that I think about it, Haley probably could sell a couple million albums. I wouldn't buy them though. She is not good.
Phil: Nosferatu - something was really bugging me about his performance tonight - he seemed to be running everything together and not annunciating. I also just didn't buy him singing "Maria, Maria". Wrong song for mister "I'm-so-white-that-I-scare-the-undead". Then there is the vocals problems, that finished off with a massive cracking at the end.
Jordin: Again, she has one of the best vocals of the night and has the most fun of the contestants. I think at this point, she has passed Lakisha and Melinda. Best performance of the night by far, so far.
Blake: One of the better vocals of the night. But wow, did he look uncomfortable on stage. I have never seen him look so stiff. Jordin was better all around. He comes in second only because all the others were so painful
Sanjaya: we have to listen to another annoying intro from Ryan who obviously doesn't like him. I am still hoping he will sing "Hips Don't Lie". Then I find out he is singing "Besame". I then realize he is going to sing in Spanish. My first thoughts are this. One: that is fitting and appropriate since up until this point, Latin night has consisted primarily of Miami Sound Machine, that is to say, weak. Second: that is a gutsy move to sing a song in another language. Sanjaya sits on a stool for his performance and his entire performance is very subdued, but in a good way. His vocals are stronger then I have heard them since the auditions. Sorry Sanjaya haters, but Sanjaya succeeded in doing what none of the rest did tonight, he captured the appropriate emotion of the song and he gave an appropriately subtle performance. This was by far the best performance of the night and the Sanjaya's best performance since he made it to the final 24.
I will say this again, overall, the performances were bad tonight. The best vocals of the night were Sanjaya, Melinda, Blake and Jordan - in that order. The best performances were Sanjaya, Jordin, Melinda and Blake in that order.
The other 4 contestants gave awful performances with ok (Lakisha) to awful (Haley and Chris) vocals. Phil was awful at times.
I have never actually called in to vote for American Idol, but if I were to vote tonight, there is no question in my mind that I would vote for Sanjaya. My moto has always been to vote for the best performance of the night and not my favorite performer. I have never voted on AI, but I have done the internet vote for RockStar INXS and SuperNova and I always stuck to two rules: vote one time only and vote for the best overall performance of the night. By that standard, which I believe to be the proper standard. Sanjaya would get my vote tonight.
All of that said - I say this again - PLEAASSSEEE get some better THEMES!!!!! It's actually embarassing that J Lo was the celebrity coach and nobody sang one of her songs. What's a matter, didn't they think they could pull of "Jenny from the block"?

Yeah, Marc (3), and ol' booze-hound Dino did an absolutely fantastic version of "Sway" as well... so much better than Melinda's lame take. Don't any of these kids even listen to how America's musical Legends handled these numbers? Even Rosemary Clooney's and Michael Buble's versions should have taught Melinda something. Oh well.
I actually liked the Latin theme, just wish the singers had been up to the material.

I think the Idol producers are setting Lakisha up to go home. Why else would Paula actually say something bad? It was obvious that was scripted. And Simon saying he preferred Chris over Lakisha AND Melinda? Scripted. I do believe that the votes decide who goes and stays, but I also believe this is a show and the producers are trying to influence the voters.
Chris, Haley, and Phil were the worst. I don't know who all noticed, but the mike was turned down more when Haley sang, so that the band was louder than her. Probably so viewers wouldn't listen to her butcher that song and instead concentrate on her legs.
Phil was horrible, as he has been for a while. I haven't liked him since the very first top-24 performance. And it's pretty bad when you crack during a live performance. He needs to learn control. I hope he or Haley goes home.
Jordin and Blake were kind of good, just because they can sing. However, the Latin 'flava' wasn't there.
I am actually glad that the other contestants sucked because now VFTW can't totally say Sanjaya was the "worst". That site has much less credibility when they choose the wrong contestant... and I love it when they lose credibility... *strong feelings*
Why do people hate J.Lo anyways? She CAN sing, if you heard her sing when she helped some of the contestants rehearse. I'm glad A.I. is finally trying to bring more modern stars to their stage. It's smart marketing. MOST A.I. viewers are younger and it's important to appeal to a younger audience if they want to sell tickets to their tour and for their CDs.
I'm 18 and I admit I spend waaaaay too much money music and concert tickets. But it is because of A.I. I found out about the Gwen Stefani/Akon tour and bought tickets. Anybody buying tickets to see Lulu or that guy from Herman's Hermits? nope.

Tonight was actually just OK. Nobody actually did really bad, even Sanjaya. Except that Sanjaya's OK performance would be really bad in the case of the other contestants.
Melinda did another boring song 70s style. Nothing new. She's mos def the best singer, but she needs to switch it up sometimes!
Lakisha did an upbeat song but had the same face on the whole time and looked like she was forcing the moves out.
Chris did aiight. he sang through his nose of course but it wasn't as nasally as his other song attempts.
Of course Haley came out in short shorts, a see through halter top and some blinged bra underneath. I felt a strange happiness when simon called her out. it's about time her strategy has been officially exposed.
Phil, phil, phil. I actually like him better with hats on, I just wish he would pick the right hat. I actually liked Phil's vocals except for the cracking of the voice. Honestly I think Phil has one of the best male vocal (under Blake of course) but people just tend to focus on his looks rather than his vocals.
Jordin. hmmm. for some reason I just don't want her to win. She can sing and is beautiful but she annoys me so bad! well anyway, she just did alright today. She needs to stop moving around and dancing so much because she gets out of breath like Lakisha. She'll mos def be in finale w/Blake though.
BLAKE!!!! He was the star of the night. If you already don't know, he's mos def my favorite! I love that kid. He is perhaps the only one that captivates the essence of an American Idol. He may not be the best singer but he has a great voice, great look, can reinvent himself over and over, and has good talent.
Last and mos def least is sanjaya. Wow. No comment.

I have to disagree Allan. I think Sanjaya DID listen, very carefully, to Dean Martin's version of Besame Mucho, and that's why he was so good.
And I thought Melinda's Sway was pretty good, not up there with the "legends" as you call them, but still about the best thing tonight.
