If there were any doubts that the new Cavemen series was going to be a drama, this news should put them to rest...According to The Hollywood Reporter, comedy veterans Bill Martin and Mike Schiff have been signed to run the new show, based on the extremely funny GEICO ads. They have a pretty good pedigree; they created Grounded for Life and were the show-runners for Third Rock From the Sun. They're also responsible for The Singles Table, a show NBC picked up for mid-season but has yet to air.
It seems like a good matchup, since Third Rock was also about a group that was trying to make their way in a strange environment. They've already made some small changes to the pilot script; the pilot itself starts shooting today, according to the article.

I've got my fingers crossed for a one-camera, no-laugh-track, play-it-straight farce about caveman snobs. If the producers turn this in "According to Jim" with cavemen, it will absolutely suck.

I'm hoping for a "The office" style type of show.

I don't even know if it matters how good it is. It's a television series based on a commercial. There's something pungently evil about that.

Nathan almost said what I was thinking. That is, until I read TomB's comment. Let me spell out the more likely outcome:
This show has the potential to suck. And suck big time.
Let's take a one shot idea - I believe the Saturday Night LIve skits that they couldn't even bloat into a 2 hour movie would easily need a second hand to count - and try and extend it into something more than what it is.
What's next? The Jolly Green Giant saves the world from Mr. Whipple who mistakenly thinks the entire world wants to squeeze the Charmin? It might work for 5 minutes on a single TV episode people - but for something more?
As for "pretty good pedigree", these guys baely make the list. 3rd Rock? That lost all originality by the 2nd episode of the second season. If not sooner.

I don't know...those commercials are a hoot!
Then again, you know how good your favorite cookie tastes? You know how your last favorite cookie lost favor after you ate way too many of them in one sitting, or you ate a bad one? Yeah, right.
