Sara Ramirez: In the Limelight

Sara RamirezWhen Sara Ramirez made her first appearance on Grey's Anatomy, I asked myself who was this newcomer and why did she get such a role (note that I knew the importance of Callie before she appeared on the show since, well, I admit it, I'm a spoilers addict!).

Looking at her profile, the term "newcomer" may not be the best to describe her as she has been in the business since 1998 when she played a small part in the movie You've Got Mail, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Then again, the term "newcomer" may be suitable as before Grey's Anatomy, Ramirez never had a major role in a movie or TV series. However, she had already made her mark on Broadway.Sara Ramirez was born in 1975 in Mexico. When she was rather young, she moved to San Diego with her mother after her parents divorced. Eventually, Ramirez got interested in the arts and studied acting and singing at San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and at the Julliard School of Drama.

After being part of You've Got Mail, she voiced a character in the video game UmJammer Lammy. In 2000, Sara Ramirez started guest starring in various US television series such as Spin City, Third Watch, Law & Order: SVU, As The World Turns, and NYPD Blue. During that time, she also acted in movies including Spider-Man and Chicago as well as starred on Broadway in various shows such as Paul Simon's The Capeman and Dreamgirls. In May 2005, Sara Ramirez, who was now acting on Broadway, won the Tony Award for "Featured Actress in a Musical" as well as a The Outer Critics Circle Award for "Outstanding featured Actress in a Musical" for her role as The Lady of the Lake in Monty Python's Spamalot.

In 2006, Sara Ramirez landed the guest starring role of Callie Torres, which eventually turn in a regular role, on ABC's hit series Grey's Anatomy. Thanks to her charm, good writing, compelling (and fun) scenes (including one where she dances in her underwear), as well as good acting, Ramirez started to leave her mark in the TV world (even though some of fans don't like her because her character married George, thus hurting the George/Izzie relationship).
