The ratings are down! The ratings are down! Is this the beginning of the end for the juggernaut called American Idol? Perhaps the Sanjaya-haters are actually following through with their threats to tune out until the controversial singer is sent packing. Should producers be worried? Maybe just a little.
According to Nielsen, the ratings for the Tuesday night performance shows have dropped about 10 percent compared to last season (from about 31 million to 28 million viewers). And last Wednesday's results show (April 4) reportedly had the lowest ratings of the season.
Producer Nigel Lythgoe isn't sweating the drop in ratings. He said, "Even if we lost 50 percent of our audience, we'd still be in the top three shows in the country."
Nice try, Nigel, but that's not exactly correct. If Idol's numbers did drop in half, it could be beat (according to March 27th ratings) by CSI, House, and Dancing with the Stars (both nights). Of course, Idol has a long way to go before it alienates 16 million fans and sinks into fifth place just ahead of Shark or 'Til Death.
Lythgoe, however, isn't blaming Sanjaya's hair for the ratings dive. He thinks the fact that Daylight Savings Time came three weeks earlier this year, is the reason a small portion of the audience has drifted away.
I imagine that extending the results show isn't going to win back those fans who have drifted away. If anything, it might be time for Idol's producers to acknowledge that "sometimes less is more."

Yeah, it's Daylight Savings Time's fault. The problem is the contestants. It's a frighteningly weak bunch of folks and whoever wins this year, no one's really going to care.

I enjoy the show, but I would really love it if the ratings fall, why?
1. other shows could be on against AI. Compention is good.
2. Less pointless time for lameass commeral breaks.
And 'Til Death rankings would fall back down too. Remember that before it was put after AI the ratings were shit and talk of being canned. So AI would still beat 'Til Death because 'Til Death's ratings are based on AI's.

Are you listening Nigel Lithgow, Simon, Randy and Paula? I have watched every show since the first. And, as usual, I watched the auditions. There were many excellent singers there. But they did not make the cut. Instead YOU gave us TWENTY ONE untalented people and ONLY THREE good singers. Note: I said YOU. YOU set the Top Twenty Four not the American people. And the incredibly weak twenty one this year are embarrassing. Do you think that the American people cannot recognize a stacked deck when we see one? Your lack of respect for the American intelligence will sink this previously entertaining show. And it has predjudiced us against the three: Melinda, Jordin and Lakisha who deserve the title and everything that comes with it. This whole season of Idol is leaving a very bad taste in my mouth. Daylight savings time indeed!

I am so diappointed in the show because it has become a popularity contest not a singing contest. It is such a step up for singers that is so hard to get other wise. Don't vote because the person is cute vote because they can sing. It is painful to watch Sanj. stay on week after week. No,he can't sing no I don't think he is that cute and its ruining the show.

40% bad casting
40% fatigue from too many, too long episodes
20% early Daylight Savings Time (some other 8 p.m. shows had dips, but this should have evened out by now)

I, too, think it's the weaker contestants this season. There are only 4 or 5 contestants that I enjoy watching and the rest are filler. Somehow the show seemed more fun last year when the contestants were closer together in talent with no obvious front-runners. This year there also isn't the range in genres - last year had pop, rock, soul, and blues while this year has pop, soul, and a very pop-focused kind of rock.

I have to disagree with you Emily I think last year had a few front runners that everyone really liked, but the other contestents were really good too in their own way.
This year it is pretty even besides the black women. The problem is the "even' people this year are fine singers but nothing wows you like they would last year. The voting isn't helping either with dead Phil, the flameboyantly annoying Sanjaya, and that sluty girl whose name I can't remember. All three of them should have went home before Gina. Gina was the only different person in the race.

Surprised? Nope. This year AI has become a joke. Watching the summer prelims and wondering just how many talented people actually were passed over for whack jobs. To watching perfectly talented contestants getting booted off week after week in favor of Sanjaya?? What a joke!! It is no longer a talent constest.

anyone who believed that idol would remain #1 forever is an idiot.
americans hve VERY short attention spans, so its not the contestants, its not daylight savings, its just that ppl were bound to lose interest sooner or later.
anyways, i really hope the ratings crash so at least more ppl tune into LOST, a show that is far far more entertaining.

Yes, I agree, the judges passed the uninspiring, boring top 24 into the voting round, so they get what they deserve. People are blaming Sanjaya, but he is no better and no worse then any of the others on the show with the exception of Lakisha, Jordin and Melinda. Chris Sligh was one of the only interesting people to make the top 12, and once he did, he suddenly became boring, uninspired and lost his sense of humor.
But most importantly, I have to agree with Stigmata - watch LOST people!!!! It doesn't even conflict with Idol anymore. The last 4 episodes have been the best of the season. Besides, even when Lost has a "bad" episode, it is still better then everything else on TV.
Also, shoutout to Heroes and Jericho - two other excellent scripted tv shows.

Unfortunately, Idol must count me among the 10% who have "given up the ghost" with the show. I wanted to like it this year.... I really did, but when I discovered that there was no "fail safe" mechanism that was put into place regarding the "stuffing of the ballot box," it was time for me to leave. Everytime that Seacrest asks, "Did America get it wrong?" and the camera pans over the judges, you know that they want to say, "Yes, America screwed up!!!" but they can't. They're hamstrung by the machinations of people who like to be destructive instead of constructive. Until there is such a fail-safe mechanism put into place which protects the majority of "good" constestants, they will have lost me (and I assume others) as a viewer

I think that this year's batch of singers, while okay, is not as strong as the other five seasons. There have been some shades of boredom, nothing quite exciting. It's really hard for them to top last year's group, or the years that Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and Fantasia were on it. Most of the male singers selected for the top 24 were not that good. Most were bland from the start. Only Blake Lewis stands out as the best male singer. The girls are still the best. LaKisha, Melinda and Jordin have been strong every week! Also, what's causing the ratings to fall 10 percent is Sanjaya Malakar still being on it. He needs work on the singing as well as the performance. All the overexposure on Sanjaya is taking all the attention away from the best singers. Those producers SHOULD be worried if American Idol falls by 3 million viewers. Also, some contestants forgot the WORDS or the LYRICS of the songs in the performances, a complete no-no! And why would they extend their results show to one hour? It looked too overpadded and excessive! If they had 12 contestants, okay, but they're doing it when 5 to 7 people are left! It's RIDICULOUS! They sound so DESPERATE to gain back the people who quit watching. And this show's been on for 5 years since 2002. The age is starting to show and the judges are becoming bored with some performances. They've tried nearly everything to keep viewers hooked, but maybe this isn't the year. I think that Dancing With the Stars' new season is stealing away some of AI's audience. And I don't think that Sanjaya will stay any longer--he's just overwhelmed by better singers. But I'll say this--if Sanjaya is eliminated, it would be a relief! Get him out and let us focus on the better TALENT! That's what we came to see! I think it took a very off-key singer to affect American Idol's ratings and the producers do need to be worried and nervous if they lose more viewers this week.

Well here is the solution to Idol's problems with folks like Sanjaya. Next year they should change the voting so that instead of voting for the one you want to stay, vote for the one you want to leave. If this were done you would find the bad singers would be sent home much quicker. Lots of folks who watch the show don't vote. The reason is they really don't care enough about any one person on the show to make the effort. But anger makes people do things that they don't normally do and if they felt strongly about someone needing to go they would take the time to vote. Also, votes would not be divided among so many who can sing, but rather concentrated on the few who can't. It would not change much about the show other than giving relief to the fans for someone like Sanjaya. He really is enough to make you want to stop watching.

The voting procedure in the problem. Kids vote again and again and again. After one vote, block the damn things and I think voting who you want kicked off would be the best thing. That Sanjya is absolutely sickening. A fruity tooty, untalented minority person....the three girls are all amazing with Melinda and Lakisha leading....Blake is silly, Chris is cute and a non-starter and it is the judges fault. How did they pass on Sanjaya anyway? He couldn't have had talent and than just lost it....what was Paula drinking when she passed him on?
