Oh, come on!
NBC has canceled Andy Barker, P.I. After airing only four episodes, the network sent the remaining two episodes to Saturdays and Scrubs will air in its place starting this Thursday night (that was already the plan, it's just happening earlier).
This is so depressing. Did anybody see the chicken episode two weeks ago? I howled with laughter over that one. Admittedly, last week's episode wasn't that great. According to The Futon Critic, Barker had its lowest ratings last week with 1.8. I'd like to know what kind of numbers NBC had on its website, where it posted all six episodes of Andy Barker for free before it even premiered on the network.
I just knew that it wasn't going to survive because A) Andy Richter is cursed, B) People wouldn't get it, and C) NBC wasn't going to give it a chance. You have to watch closely to see past the main story of Andy, the naive CPA-turned private investigator and find the humor in the supporting characters. Tony Hale as a video store geek and Marshall Manesh as an Afghani restaurant owner had hilarious lines, but maybe they weren't obvious enough to people.

This makes 5 different shows now from the 06-07 season that I watch to be cancelled. Rediculous.

Not a shock. The humor was great but way too subtle for a country that prefers In-Your-Face-Mugging-For-The-Camera stuff like According to Jim and Scrubs.

What a shame nobody watched it. I didn't like Andy Richter Controls the Universe, and wasn't anticipating liking this either. Was I surprised. Too hip, too cool. And JANE ESPENSON was a producer-a sure sign of a quality show. But, alas, it had to contend with Grey's Anatomy. Oh, well.

Yeah it's a shame, but the writing was on the wall as soon as they posted the first 6 eps online. It's like NBC didn't have any faith to begin with.
It's sad it got cancelled, I liked it.
bdgc: Please don't put According to Jim and Scrubs in the same category. Scrubs had more in common with Andy Barker P.I. than it does with According to Jim. While Scrubs is a lot of "in your face humor" there's a ton of subtle jokes that remind me of shows like Arrested Development. Scrubs is leagues ahead of Jim.

tvblogger, To me there's not much difference. Sorry, Scrubs is a bit too obvious for my tastes - the jokes seemed telegraphed, the serious moments ponderous ("Next on a very special Growing Pains" style), the characters bland and not at all creative or distinctive.
I've been forced to watch 2 seasons end to end. It shares nothing in common with Arrested Development, as far as I can see. AD just went balls out with its characters; they had a tendency to really surprise you. And they never, ever, attempted to be serious...or have a musical episode.

I thought this was NBC, the network who has given chances to lots of critically acclaimed yet low rated shows like The Office, and 30 Rock?
Andy Barker was getting just as great reviews as those two shows when they first premiered, so this just confuses me.
bahhhhhhhhh. i'm hoping it gets released on DVD at least, so I can enjoy these episodes for years to come.

Hopefully it will get to DVD faster than Andy Richter Controls the Universe (I'm wondering if we'll ever get that). What is the big freaking holdup? It can possibly be music clearances (the bane of Ed and WKRP)? I just don't remember music being such an integral component of that show.

TVBlogger's got it right. As soon as they posted the episodes online before the premiere, you had to know it was toast. They stuck them on the air just to see if it became a surprise hit, but they never had any faith in it at all, and it's ratings were as bad as they'd expected.
But don't blame the networks for this stuff, the blame, as Kent Brockman would say, falls squarely on you, the viewer. Well not you, but all the viewers who didn't watch it. America has spoken. It wants Two and a Half Men, it doesn't want actual good comedy.

Dang, dang, dang. I loved this show! Andy Richter gets no breaks, that's for sure. I loved "Andy Richter Controls the Universe" (on repeats on HDTV these days) and really enjoyed Andy Barker, P.I.
My big question is: when you put up a show against a ratings powerhouse like Grey's and CSI, why are you surprised when a show doesn't have stellar ratings? NBC should have given it a chance on a different day. *sigh* I'll miss it.

God, this is horrible news.
Aside from 30 Rock, this was the only show in the week that I laughed out loud at. I was worried about this show the most, not FNL, not VM and not Supernatural. This was the show I really wanted to keep.

Personally I never really liked this show, really don't like Andy Richter though. I do always hate it when a show people like gets canceled.

Quite a shame. I really enjoyed it but suspect it wasn't fast enough with the jokes.

This doesn't surprise me. It has a committed man to his wife, somewhat clean fun and humor.
If Andy was cheating on his wife and there was more racey content and maybe more crass converstation, then, just then it may have survived.
I'm sad to see it go.

It seems like Andy Richter and Tony Hale are both cursed.
This was such a good show! Why not give it a chance on any other day???

TV Viewer Life Cycle:
Step 1: Don't watch the news shows as they don't want to get attached to shows that they know are probably really funny/smart/good, but they know will probably be cancelled. If they stick around, maybe pick up on DVD and DVD sales are likely strong.
Step 2: Show premieres, gets bad ratings
Step 3: Show gets cancelled
Step 4: TV networks don't understand that some shows need some time to increase viewership/become better/etc. They of course blame viewers for low ratings.
Step 5: Rinse, repeat.

just for clarification, Andy Barker did a 1.8 in the 18-49 demographic, its overall ratings was around what 30 rock does every week.
I guess Andy Barker was too expensive to produce in relation to its low ratings....
