When I was in junior high, I picked up a copy of The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. I had never heard of Adams, and I didn't know that The Restaurant at the End of the Universe was actually the second book in a series (the first, of course, being The Hitchhikker's Guide to the Galaxy).
As I tended to do a lot back then, I read part of the book and then never finished it. It wouldn't be until several years later (and by that I mean "after I graduated college") that I would finally sit down and read the entire series.
Some of you may be wondering why I'm talking about books on a TV blog. Well, it's because The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has taken on many forms: it was a radio play, a TV series, a computer game, a somewhat modified American film, and possibly a brand of toaster waffles.
In 1979, when I was a mere three years old, Ian Shircore spent some time with Adams and the two men talked at length about Adams' career, including his time spent writing with the late Graham Chapman of Monty Python, getting the Hitchhiker's series on BBC, and writing for Dr. Who. The interview has never been published before, but you can read the first two parts here and here. More of the interview will be posted in the coming months.
My favorite quote from the article so far is this little gem from Adams: "I like to believe the audience is actually intelligent, because it's made up of other people like yourself. "
I think everyone who writes or creates anything for the masses should have that phrase hung above their work stations.
