Desperate Housewives: Dress Big

John Slattery(S03E17) And, they're back! Is it just me, or did that feel like a particularly long hiatus? At any rate, I am happy that they're back. And finally, finally, they are giving Gaby an interesting storyline, with a worthy partner. Phew. So, let's talk about Gaby first.

I didn't know what to think about her new, older, cocky boyfriend at first. Actor John Slattery, who plays Victor, also played a politician on Sex and the City. That character dated Carrie until he proposed something to her that she found offensive, so he wasn't around for more than a couple of episodes. But he seems to have the sleazy politician role down.

I wasn't impressed with his little confession that his wife was there for him while he was an ass of a husband. That doesn't mean anything; he could have been manufacturing a guilt trip because nothing else with Gaby has worked. What actually DID impress me was that he refused to let Gaby borrow any of his ex-wife's clothes. That says a lot about his sense of honor and decency. Heck, it's just clothes, just dresses, but he respects his ex-wife enough to be sensitive to how she would feel about Gaby borrowing one of the dresses. So, based on that, I don't think he's completely irredeemable. And he is certainly a worthy sparring partner for Gaby.

Lynette and Tom, fighting again, yawn. But what is interesting is that their fighting actually seems to be leading to something. We have been watching Tom and Lynette grappling with each other, the revelation that Tom has a daughter, and their power struggles. But we really haven't seen any hints of being tempted to stray or any serious threats of infidelity. With Tom's ruptured disc, we are going to see the introduction of a new character, a chef who starts off his relationship with Lynette by telling her how beautiful she is. I am very curious to see whether or not Lynette is going to be seriously tempted to stray from Tom-- and what she will do if she IS tempted.

Speaking of temptation, I did not see Edie and Carlos taking this step. If anything, I thought Gaby and Carlos were going to get back together sooner than later. But something about this strangely works for me! What did you think of that? Oh, I don't trust Edie very much. But I do think that Carlos brings out something better in her. And contrary to how I felt about Victor, I did buy it when Edie told Carlos that he had absolutely nailed her when he said she couldn't even commit to her kid, so how could she commit to a guy. We'll see what happens, but I think Travers is a powerful draw for Carlos. It's a two-for-one package deal, so it will be interesting to see how this relationship develops.

For the first time, I am actually starting to like Susan. And, as it may be that I am supposed to, the more I like Susan, the less I like Ian. Of course he doesn't trust her. I kind of wanted to see her sign the pre-nup though, just to fling it in Ian's face. Blackmailing his cross-dressing father (or thinly veiling a threat to blackmail him) was amusing, but it didn't work so much for me as much as taking the pre-nup and signing it the night she was fighting with Ian would have. Lynn Redgrave as Ian's mother was great though. Just priceless. And I didn't even view her as the villain. Ian is the prick here. His mother is just responding to the cues she has seen in her own marriage and to the cues she has gotten from Susan. She is just protecting herself. So glad Mike is getting his memory back and that he and Susan look like they will eventually get back together.
