There's a theory going around that the large population of India has rallied behind Sanjaya. But that theory seems unlikely. While Sanjaya is making a splash in America, he's barely made a ripple in India. He's reportedly only received a couple of mentions in newspaper articles and blogs, and was included in one TV news segment. According to Amit Varma, Sanjaya is "also an object of ridicule." Varma runs a popular blog called India Uncut.
Another theory claims that Indians control the call-in centers, and are allegedly fixing this competition for Sanjaya. But this also seems unlikely, as calls are automatically dialed by computers at these centers, and not by the employees.
Idol always seems to generate its share of controversy. That's just what happens when you are the biggest show around. But this year, it all seems to be swirling around around a 17-year-old kid with a mega-watt smile, who is making a lot of viewers mad by overstaying his welcome.

I don't believe anything shady is going on, other than Indian people voting for their own, no matter how bad he is. There was even a sign in the audience from someone saying, "vote for Sanjaya, he's one of my people."
It's pathetic, but true. I don't think the people from India care. But the Americans who are from India are certainly influencing the vote.
There is no way this no talent kid would get this far without racial profiling.

If you truly believe the call center theory, then the solution is simple. At 8:50 call Dell about your computer or Sony about that Beta-Max player that just doesn't work right anymore. That will do the trick.

unless the call centers have VOIP American phone numbers, I would think AI would have a hard time recognizing the calls. They have the votes set up by time zones and area codes so you can only vote for the two hours after the show airs in your time zone.
How far did John Stevens go? Josh Gracin? Niki McKibbin? Kevin Covais? Scott Sovol? Jasmine Trias? There has always been at least one contestant each year that goes farther than a majority thinks they should. We've always had at least one really good contestant go home early while an average contestant stays.
I really feel like the press has made more out of this kid than needs to be at this time in the competition. If you ask me that's what driving his votes more so than anything else. The more the press writes about him, the more his fans want to vote for him and it encourages those who hate American Idol to vote for him too.
I'm not a fan of Sanjaya but I'm not worried about him winning either. I'm curious as to where Gina's votes are going to go. Who will those people vote for now?

My parents are absolutely convinced of this theory and nothing will persuade them of otherwise. They insist that is the only explanation. I personally believe that Joseph Stalin is behind it all. He liked to torture people right?

I'm sorry the 'racial profiling' comment is just racist. Why is Haley still there and how did Justin Guarini make it to the top two? I don't understand why when a minority gets anywhere whites have to claim its due to their ethnicity. By the by, 'racial profiling' is when whites assume minorities are up to no good due to their race. So, crambam you're the one who's 'racial profiling'.

The racial profiling comment is NOT racist. It's reality. The racism is a group of people voting in a block for a no talent moron. He can't sing. He can't dance. He can't entertain. There is absolutely no reason for him to be alive in the competition other than his race.
If Sanjaya was not indian, he would not be where he is now. If you think otherwise, you are in major denial.
Denying that and crying racism is not going to change that.

The "racial profiling" comment may not be racist, but it is certainly ill-informed. Even if there were a significant number of votes from people of indian descent, that is NOT "racial profiling." The term is used describe a practice by law enforcement to treat minorities differently than whites. To even suggest that the same thing is happening on this stupid tv show has anything to do with that practice is insulting to the millions of minorities who have had to undergo traffic stops, surveillance and other forms of discriminatory treatment at the hands of law enforcement simply because of the color of their skin. Get a grip!
Now, on to the point that you were apparently trying to make. Sanjaya's run on AI has nothing whatsoever to do with his ethnicity. He is getting votes because young girls think he's cute and because people like me, Howard Stern and all the other worsters think the show is evil and should be destroyed. Period. End of story.

Lots of white people are voting for him too you know. He sucks, the whole show sucks, and it's fun to try to ruin it by voting this way.
AI voting has been broken since the show started. Several decent contestants have been eliminated early because of this. Instead of voting for the best, they should have people vote for the WORST. This fixes everything, even no-talent Sanjaya wouldn't survive through that.

thank you davpel for saying almost everything I was going to except that there is nothing wrong with rooting for someone who you identify with.
You don't root for fellow countrymen in the Olympics?
Regardless it has nothing to with “Racial Profiling” (whether or not you think it is a necessary practice as if searching children and old woman at the airport makes sense instead of those who for whatever reason fit into a higher risk group - but that has nothing to do with TV so I’ll let it go.
Long story short this kid has got momentum and people are voting for him and more and more will as long as this goes on. Hell, Larry King did a whole show on the Iran/ British hostage situation and the call in poll was about Sanjaya.

@ Stephen
I totally agree with you. That's what I've been saying this whole time. The AI voting system is flawed because of the direction of votes. We should be voting to eliminate the weakest party, not promote a single individual.
If they just changed this, it would fix everything.

Gordy, if that was directed at Stephen and I, then you are misunderstanding us.
VFTW promotes the weakest performer simply for entertainment value. They like to see the underdog on stage for as long as possible because they find him funny and uncomfortable,.. not talented.
Instead, we are saying AI needs to change the voting system in general and have people vote for who they want eliminated. That way it's harder to show favoritisim for a particular person. The person who wins would be, by process of elimination, deemed the best.

Here's my theory as an Indian myself who considers Sanjaya a disgrace.
There's a very strong sense of nationalism amongst the thousands of Indians in America, and they'll root for any Indian in the America public eye. So no matter how bad Sanjaya may be, a majority of Indians will still vote for him just because he's Indian.
My parents saw Harold and Kumar just because Kal Penn was in it...and that had to be possibly the most awkward moment in my 15 year old life.

I totally agree with what everyone has just said, or typed, rather. The reason Sanjaya still exists is the reason that most Boy Bands and ex-Boy Band members continue to survive past their expiration date. Prettiness. If we're absolutely honest, I think that Sanjaya is one of the best-looking people on the show. Without him, who would little girls have to look at and scream over?
However, veering off to re-address the person who first-misused the term and then re-asserted his beliefs to further spotlight his racial ignorance. I'd like to point out, CB, that I listed multiple no-talent people on AI. Yet, somehow you did not attribute their existence on AI and lack of talent to their race, despite the subsistence of other people like that in the media i.e. Timberlake, Spears, Lachey. Why is that? I think I know and it starts with an R. Whatevs.

As an Indian myself i can tell you that there is no way he is surviving with just the indie vote. Most people in India honestly don't give a damn about AI, they have their own TV and their own lives to worry about. Even the people here in America are not voting for him because he is an embarrasement to everybody. As a member of some of the popular Indian discussion boards most don't vote for him. He is surviving with the girl vote (i don't get what they see in him) and vote for the worst campaign.

I've been a big American Idol fan from the beginning. This year has been a joke. I don't even want to watch it anymore. The show is not about pretty boys, race and screaming teeny boppers. Its about talent. Fox better change their voting methods or the show is going down the tubes. I believe vote to eliminate is the way to go. I always know who I think has the least of talent but I often bounce around on who is the best. I think it would be a much fairer way to find the best talent.

I think a few of you are misunderstanding some definitions. Racial profiling has nothing to do with a white person profiling a non-white person. It is making an assumption because of someone's race. Yes unfortunately it is mostly used by the police to stop African-Americans in expensive cars because they could be stolen or for a Muslim being stopped at the airport because he/she might be a terrorist. The difference is the police man could be white, black, purple or whatever and it would still be racial profiling. It's like saying when a black person prejudges a white person it's called reverse racism when in fact it is still called racism no matter who hates who because of colour.
The white man is not always the devil and thinking so is racist.

I think Sanjaya is not a good singer, his girlish looks and the way he acts seems to me he have been aroud to many femals. If he was to be honest and admit that he is being kept on by other things than his singing. he would dismiss hisself from AI.
