(S08I02) Now this is more like it. I look back at the first issue of this series and I almost have to wonder if it was written at all by Whedon, with the lack of great lines and the funny. This issue gets right down to the things that made the TV series so great.More old friends make an appearance in this issue, we've got a decent dose of action and even a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure. Once again this feels very much like what one would expect to see between commercials, with a great ending to keep you hooked on for the rest of the episode. Of course, it's working.
Let's start with who else has come back: Giles, Jonathan Andrew and, in the last scene, Willow. Each character keeps in ine with how we've come to know them for many seasons. For that matter, all of the characters finally are fitting into their molds. As you read the dialog, it's very easy to hear their voices.
One problem I have is how Andrew looks. In some frames he's barely noticeable. If it weren't for the overly geeky dialog, one might not know who this is. And I have to say I'm getting increasingly impatient with this guy. I mean, he's apparently straight, yet in being surrounded by a legion of hot women he seems to make nary a move for them.
I'm guessing that in one of the frames of Buffy's dream, the hand reaching out to her is Angel. Something that caught me totally by surprise was Buffy making an advance toward Xander, even if it was in a dream. It seemed as though it's something she's now considering, now that he's all "grrrr" and patchy-eyed. I've said all along that I thought Joss's plan was for them two to wind up together at some point, so maybe this is it.
It seems maybe the semi-big bad of this season isn't the government afterall, and is instead a large corporation. Or at least they're working together, but why do they want Buffy out of their way?
If this was the plan all along for an eighth season of Buffy, I'm damn glad they decided to go with a comic book. Already you can see the budget for such an undertaking for television (and even a movie) would be through the roof. The locales, the number of slayers/baddies and the special effects are astounding to consider had they been played out with live actors.

Andrew: "I mean it's great that George Lucas wanted to have an African-Bespinian character in the mix, but then he shows up with the cape and the little bellbottoms and I'm thinking, 'Oh, he's gonna help Han and Chewie just as soon as he finishes the magic show for the kids' birthday party!' I mean, knock knock, common sense trying to get in, door's locked, I'll buy a race of teddy bears with unstoppable tree-trunk technology any day over that outfit on a LEADER.

It's the same symbol that the sacrificial (whether willingly or not) victims had on their chests in the first issue. No doubt part of the overarching plot for this story arc.

I'm excited for the rest of the comics, but I'm also nervous. I think seasons 2,3,4, and 5 of Buffy were fantastic and much of season 5 of Angel was fantastic as well. I hope the comic goes with the fantasicness of the seasons I mentioned rather than the "meh" of season 7 Buffy and what I've read of Joss's Astonishing X-Men. *crosses fingers* I love the Buffy-verse and am looking forward to the story continuing. I think there's much more to be said with these characters and their world, I just also hope that the standards are no less than the best.

Whether Andrew is supposed to be straight or not, I don't get why he has to make a move on a woman in the midst of a Q&A session in order to prove it. He only seemed straight in the ending of that episode of Angel set in Italy, when he leaves the apartment with two beautiful women, as he talked about moving on, or something like that (which makes heterosexuality out to be a kind of "growing up"). Of course, that's the episode where (we learn after the fact) that he fooled Spike and Angel into thinking Buffy was dating the Immortal. So that could have been just another deception, just for kicks. Anyway, if you're not annoyed by the geekiness (and judging by the quote of the issue, you're not), why are you so impatient for him to seem straight enough in only part of one issue?

I defenitely say that the hand leaning on Buffy in her dream is Spike's, don't you see the black leather coat? and the t-shirt is so Spike and Angel would never call her "my love" in that easy way, isn't it?
