I've said before on this blog that I'm not a big fan of reality programming in general, but finally someone has come up with a concept that I can relate to. The new reality pilot from producers Bernie Mac and Ben Silverman is called Welcome to the Family and focuses on couples of different races, religions and cultural backgrounds who get engaged and have to tell their respective families for the first time.
The reason this concept speaks to me is that I actually marry and divorce a person from a different background every week. But this isn't about me, so let's move on.
Mac will narrate the episodes, and co-producer H.T. Owens describes it as "the first reality romantic comedy."
Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive, but doesn't the whole concept of this show hinge on the idea that people are unaccepting of people different than themselves? That viewpoint seems just a tad atavistic to me. I've had serious relationships with people of a different race than myself and it was never an issue with my family. Now I kind of wish my family did have a problem with my choice of girlfriends because maybe we could have been on television. Damn my enlightened parents!
