What to Watch April 2 - 8

The Bachelor on ABC and The Sopranos on HBOThe Bachelor: Officer and a Gentleman (Mon., 9:45PM ET, ABC) 10th season premiere
In nine seasons, no Bachelor has married the woman to whom he gave his final rose. None. Zip. Nada. Most of them aren't even still dating the women they chose. So, you gotta wonder how the show manages to go on. Why do women keep signing up for it? In the premiere, some of the bachelorettes care less about Navy doctor Andy Baldwin than sniping at each other. It's all about the chase, so why even bother with the guy? He's probably not going to marry any of 'em, anyway.

The Shield (Tue., 10PM ET, FX) 6th season premiere
In a television landscape littered with strong personalities (think House, Jack Bauer, Rosie), there's still nobody like Vic Mackey, with his shiny bald pate and murky methods. In the premiere, Vic wants vengeance for the murder of Lem -- not knowing the killer is another Strike Team member, Shane -- while rabid Internal Affairs officer Kavanaugh wants to pin it on Vic. Not only that, he finds out from Claudette that the brass wants him to retire.

Bones (Wed., 8PM ET, Fox)
Who to cast as a character's parent? It's always intriguing to see who the show runners pick. Sometimes, the choice is genius (George Takei on Heroes, Sally Field on Brothers and Sisters). Sometimes, it's just odd. Which way will it be for Ryan O'Neal as Temperance Brennan's dad? We'll have to see. He surprises Bones while she's visiting her mother's grave. Meanwhile, Booth investigates a concrete-encased body's connection to a mob boss.

The Office, 30 Rock & Scrubs (Thu., 8PM ET, NBC) super-sized
I hope whoever thought of super-sizing NBC's comedies got a big, fat raise. It's brilliant marketing scheme, and I get 10 or so more minutes of some of my favorite shows. Win-win! In The Office, Jim faces the aftermath of Pam's confession to Roy that Jim kissed her on Casino Night. On 30 Rock, Will Arnett (Arrested Development) guest stars as an executive who wants Jack's job. And on Scrubs, JD and the Sacred Heart staff say goodbye to Nurse Roberts.

Six Degrees (Fri., 9PM ET, ABC)
When a show changes its direction and tone, it can be a big gamble. Sometimes it pays off (What About Brian), sometimes it doesn't (Jake in Progress). I'm enjoying the fluffed-up Six Degrees since its return a few weeks ago. I'm not sorry to see Mae's runaway and Damian's criminal storylines get axed. And the connections among the main six are deepening. Tonight, a local landmark's demolition comes between Whitney and Laura, while a broken-up Caseman seeks solace from his ex.

The Sopranos (Sun., 9PM ET, HBO) 6th season premiere
It keeps going and going and going ... That's how the "final season" of The Sopranos feels, doesn't it? Technically, this isn't the premiere of season six. It's the premiere of the second half of season six. The first half aired last year -- remember Vito was outed, moved to New Hampshire, came back and got whacked? So, these next nine episodes are it -- the end. We'll probably feel the pain next spring, when we're expecting another season and nothing comes. Tonight, Tony celebrates his birthday in the Adirondacks with Carmela, Janice and Bobby. Expect wild times.
