I've been checking out Friday Night Lights on and off throughout the season, and every time I tune in, I'm always blown away at a) how well acted it is, b) how the stories don't always fall into the cliche, and c) how the show can suck you in even if you're not a week-in-week-out watcher. Last night's episode demonstrated all three attributes. Brett's review goes into more details than I ever could, but there were two scenes in particular where the show could have fallen into the usual TV and movie conventions, but steps around them, giving the viewer much more compelling results. The first was during the cow pasture game. Instead of having a game where the Dillon Panthers take advantage of their impromptu field and flummox the Vikings, or have them fall behind by a lot then come back, the writers decided to start a downpour. So during the entire game, both teams slid around the muddy field, fumbling, missing easy kicks, and playing like most football teams would play in the muck (and cow poop, I'd imagine). Yes, Dillon won, but it wasn't like they were coming back from a huge deficit; the eight points the Vikings scored right off the bat held up through halftime. The whole game was nicely shot and directed; it felt like a real mud game, not one that's played through sheets of "movie rain."
The attempted rape on Tyra was also handled well. While she's being attacked, you half expect to see the show cut away to Landry finally getting his car started and driving to the restaurant, unaware that his crush is in trouble. On just about any other show or movie, he would have pulled in just in time to thwart the attack. But on FNL, Tyra has the strength and resourcefulness to get out of the attack on her own, something that is a much more realistic situation; people in trouble usually don't have people swoop in and bail them out all the time, and neither did Tyra.
This is a show that deserves a second season. And we know that Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment, is a proponent of his "quality" shows, like FNL, 30 Rock, and even Studio 60. But the ratings for the show have been dismal; last night's show got an overnight rating of 3.8 overall and a 1.8 amongst adults 18-49. So, will NBC pick it up for next year, just on the strength of the show's quality? Or will the miniscule ratings doom it to Bravo's "Brilliant But Canceled" website? Let me know in the comments.

im a big fan of the show and i appreciate tv squad giving this show some much needed publicity
however! there is no kayla in the show the attempted rape victim was TYRA
change that and help us keep FNL on the air
i have never seen a show draw such emotional response from its viewers REGARDLESS of demographic
this is winner of a show and deserves some serious accolades for its acting, writing, handling of "issues" (race / rape / dysfunctional family life / functional family life etc) and most of all its entertainment value
i have not yet heard from a single viewer that watched the show ONCE - and was not hooked...

I think NBC really needs to put this show in a slot that it has a chance to succeed. Give it a good lead in (heck, put it on after The Office on thursdays) and see what it can do. This show is great as you said, and most people don't even know it is on.

anybody think the choice to tilte the show after the movie was maybe a mistake? maybe it helped initially for some, maybe not...but thinking about it now, i can see a potential viewer not giving the show the time of day thinking its just a rehashing of the film. just a thought.

Great show. Really needs a better time slot and I think the audience would increase. My family never missed a show till Idol started.

My wife and I have become BIG fans of the show and hope that it continues to stay with us. It would be unfortunate if it is not re newed, as I feel it's one of the best new written and acted shows to come to us in quite some time.

My daughter and I are true fans of the FNL. She is a Senior and a cheerleader at her school. She is amaised at how realistic so many of the episodes are. We both feel the show should go on. In this day and age, to many movies are getting to unrealistic.

There's a great set of short interviews with most of the major cast members on the Austin American Statesman site (http://www.austin360.com/tv/content/tv/stories/xl/2007/03/29fnl.html). Well worth the read for those that love the show.
Be sure to read the very last paragraph, as it will lead you to a few places where you can adamantly assert yourself as to this show's greatness and necessity to be renewed for another year.

Sorry about that. I was thinking Tyra, but I must have read a name similar to Kayla in Brett's review, referring to a different character, and I guess the name just stuck in my head. My apologies for the brain fart. It's been fixed.

I remember when I stopped caring about this show: when football season ended.
As a former HS football player, this show intrigued me at first and it's debut was timed perfectly with the excitement that the fall brings to any football fan. But this show is still airing episodes during baseball spring training and I could care less.
If it does get picked up for a second season, they should sync it with the rest of the football action. Sunday: NFL, Monday: NFL, Tuesday: Friday Night Lights, Thursday: JV Football, Friday: Varsity Football, Saturday: NCAA
I think everyone is a little burned out on football by the Super Bowl(tm), and dramatized fictional ball is no different.

I don't know what this show needs to survive. Maybe each fan should try to convince 10 friends or more to watch the show at least once.
Or maybe NBC could release free DVD's somehow if it's a timeslot problem. I already see them re-running shows on Bravo saturdays.

I had to comment to Elliot's ridiculousness. I hate football, and initially watched the pilot pretty much for one reason only, Kyle Chandler. There is a very good reason that the football games take up a very small part of each episode, because the show is so beyond "football", it is not even funny.
This show is not designed to attract those that would watch it because it is football season, maybe that is why it is failing, I don't know. It so much deserves to get renewed, it is without a doubt the best new show of the fall season. And the best new show in a while, regardless.

This is the best show! I hope they do the smart thing and renew it. Give it time - it will find an audience. It would be great if they would move it to a new time period. I live in Central Texas and feel like I really know these people. It's so true and real. Great Television!

there are other good shows on television right now (in addition to all of the huge amounts of highly rated pieces of crap), but at this specific moment in time FNL is the best show on television. anyone who watches knows it. anyone who hasn't yet will when they do watch. i would be SSSOOO disappointed if NBC failed to renew.

I agree that a timeslot change is in order. The show is phenomenal, but you need to actually watch it to realize it. If FNL had a blockbuster lead in (say, The Office and 30 Rock or Earl on Thursdays) in a 9pm slot it would clean up.
