Before Rachael Ray was all over the planet and the known universe, I used to watch her on the Food Network's $40 a Day. On that show, Ray Ray would visit a different city and see if she could eat three great meals with only forty bucks in hand. As you'd expect, she succeeded (let's just say she wasn't the most generous tipper), but that wasn't the most interesting part of the program. What was most interesting was the disturbingly orgasmic reactions RR had to the food she was eating at each restaurant. The reaction was exactly the same, no matter what she was eating: eyes closed, she'd moan "Mmmmmmm" for the exact same length of time, open and roll her eyes back into her head, then smile. Cute the first time, it felt pretty creepy after the first dozen or so episodes.
Which is why I couldn't get through this collection of "Mmmmms" from 30 episodes of $40 a Day, edited together by Naomi Leibowitz for her blog. Hearing RR moan her way through the country's great meals was just too much for me to take. Her Stepford-esque efficiency in making those moans told me that one of two things were going on at the time: either she faked her reactions, or she needed to get laid really, really badly. Maybe she should have taken her now-husband with her on the shoots...

I know it's funny bit of video but I disagree with you about it being fake. At least no more fake than any other reality based series of its type. The fact is television is a visual and auditory medium. How something tastes cannot be seen or heard, so it is up the the person on camera to create a visual and/or sound to convey that something tastes good. Mmmm is the universal sound that EVERYONE uses when they eat something they like. And unlike you stated, all of the Mmmms were not the same nor were they the same length. In fact, almost every one was different in some way. And I would say that's a challenge for anyone when they have to do it hundreds of times. You can also tell that she is really taking the time to chew and taste the food before reacting. I'm not quite sure anyone could convey good tasting food any better. What would you do, a thumbs up? Now, that would be annoying. ;)

Your article on RR Mmmmmming her way across the country had me in stitches this morning, thanks for making my day! She does the same thing on her 30 min. cooking show..along with the most annoying little phrases from the 70's like Deeelish and Groovy, GROOVY?? She will burn us all out in no time. But since her new show she has become a horror!
She want's all the attention. Doesn't give anyone a chance to talk. It's all about Her!
And on her show everything is pre planed. She askes guest to tell a funny story ( which was already planed out before the show!
Enough of her now! She's a self centered bitch!
