(S06E15) *Warning, spoilers from recent episode ahead*
It's really sad when the best part of a show is the last minute of a program, when you have to slog through 59 minutes of other material of so-so quality that seems very much like filler in order to get to something good.
That's how I felt about this new episode of 24. Did anyone in their right mind really believe that Nadia was a mole? Of course not, but I didn't expect her story to be resolved so quickly and simply, in less than an hour.
I also didn't expect, nor did I welcome, that weirdly awkward moment between Mike "The Brawler" Doyle and Milo Pressman when Milo found out that, geez, that Doyle guy isn't as gosh darned mean as he thought he was.
The episode, overall, had an "off" quality.
A lot of the "off-ness," I think had to do with Jack Bauer. He spent most of the episode at the home of a private sector security consultant who was using his Rain Man-like brother Brady, who was a whiz at computers (not counting cards), to do work for the former Russian General Gredenko. (Gredenko, as you all remember, was working with the "bad" terrorist, Abu Fayed, to drop nuclear bombs on the United States.) Jack, looking to capture Gredenko so he could locate the remaining two suitcase nuclear bombs, used Brady as a means to nab Gredenko before taking the Russian into custody and securing info on the location of the next two bombing targets.
But the scenes with Jack and Brady were just plain awful. Jack was all patronizing and breathy. Same way he is with Marilyn Bauer. (Only Brady didn't try to kiss Jack.) And to top it off, the actor playing Brady ripped off Dustin Hoffman's Raymond Babbitt. All I needed was for Brady to mention Judge Wapner and my night would've been complete.
Back at CTU, Nadia Yassir was cleared after it was discovered that the terrorist headset guy working with Gredenko in the last episode to control the nuke-carrying drone had infiltrated Nadia's computer with a remote access module. And, boy, did Nadia feel betrayed and angry, so angry in fact, that she and Milo did some passionate/angry necking in a darkened CTU hallway while Chloe O'Brian scowled and watched from afar.
The whole White House power struggle didn't get interesting until the end. We all knew, courtesy of the spoiler-filled episode promos, that President Wayne Palmer's sister Sandra was going to authorize doctors to take him out of his medically-induced coma in order to stop Vice President Noah Daniels from launching a nuclear strike against the Country Whose Name We Shall Not Mention. But we still had to go through the motions where National Security Advisor Karen Hayes pressured Sandra to take the president out of the coma so he could countermand Daniels.
The best moment was in the presidential bunker's Situation Room, after the saber rattling, tough guy Daniels ordered the nuclear strike "to remind the world that there are consequences for attacking our country." But the admiral then said he'd been ordered to stand down. Daniels then got a call from the president. Who was awake. And surprisingly lucid for someone who'd just come out of a coma, but I was willing to suspend disbelief and roll with it, given that this was the best that this particular hour of 24 had to offer. "The decision is mine and mine alone," said Palmer, in the most commanding posture he'd taken all season, even if it was taken from a hospital bed. "I'm resuming my duties as commander in chief."
Then, when we all expected Daniels to start stamping his feet in a temper tantrum and smacking Chief of Staff Tom Lennox around just for fun, there was a twist: Daniels decided the president should be declared incapable of "discharging his duties." "I can't let him remain in power," demonic Daniels said. "Get me the attorney general."
Obviously the doctor who's treating Palmer will conclude that he's lucid, as will Hayes and any number of other people. How Daniels could successfully orchestrate this could either be entertaining or eye rolling. I'm hoping for option number one.
And, for all of those Sandra Palmer fans out there, I thought she was pretty good tonight. Her scenes were a heck of a lot better than those with Jack and Brady.

i have a feeling the VP vs P issue will resolve in an eye rolling manner.
i'm calling it: the rainman brother is faking it. the vehicle never gets to the hospital to see his brother who is later arrested after being setup as the fallguy. rainman is working with fayed who had him in place as a backup in case gradenko turned on him like he's about to.
here's to hoping lennox grows a pair and helps palmer unleash some whoop@ss on the veep.

Amendment 25, Article 4 -- "It is also possible for the Vice President, together with a majority of the heads of the executive departments (that is to say, members of Cabinet) or of such other body as Congress by law provides, to declare the President disabled. The provisions of section four have never been invoked. An "involuntary" withdrawal may be declared for a variety of reasons. The most likely scenario, and the primary purpose of section four, is incapacitation."
My brother teaches older autistic children, and there is no way Brady would learn to trust Jack within 2 minutes of meeting him.
Great episode either way.

This season has degenerated into hands down the worst season of 24. The only good story line right now for me is the president's power struggle. The rain man thing was eye rolling as was the Milo/Nadia thing. That sort of kissy crap was reserved for Tony and Michelle, but they got offed for dramatic effects last day, and now the whole thing just doesn't work with other characters we barely know. Heck, if they're gonna do that at least do it with Chloe and Morris.
In order for the season to get better quickly, some things need to happen: Jack needs to start killing a lot of people, the terrorists need to blow up some more cities, and the president power struggle needs to keep going full steam ahead. Remember when Curtis was shot? Seems like it was years ago. Remember when Former President Handbag was stabbed? Seems like days ago. Remember Papa Bauer? Where the heck did he run off to? That's how disjointed this season has been for me.

"24" had previously taught us that bumbling blonde(s), such as Kim, can help in terrorist investigations. Season 4 showed us that Arabs can be helpful, too. Now, the developmentally-challenged can be even MORE helpful. I cannot wait until everyone in the Stroke Ward of a nursing home gets to infiltrate a terrorist safehouse and save the day.
Watching "24" requires suspension of disbelief. That is a given. I mean, Jack Bauer was supposedly tortured for 18 months and NEVER TALKED during that time, and he just found out that the love of his life died for him. And what, 15 hours? he seems pretty good. Morris was tortured and had a bit of his shoulder DRILLED THROUGH, and he was actually yelled at for not getting back to work sooner. Milo as a floor manager. Those kind of things require a entire bottle of sugar to swallow.
But Wayne Palmer being COMPLETELY fine? Hours after being blown'd up? Being in a coma? Having BRAIN SWELLING? And he's going to suit up? Shoot, he shouldn't even be able to SIT up for months. I could swallow the cougar. I just cannot, CANNOT wrap my head around this. Alcohol needs to be banned from the "24" writing room.
I know that Wayne's revival was supposed to be heroic and inspiring, but please, it's just stupid.
Sidenote: Daniel's mysterious assistant is called Lisa Miller? Shout out to WNYX!

You know what. I'm done thinking that this season is going to get better. Totally agree with comment #3, this has to be the worst season of 24. I'm not done with the show I'm just done thinking that this season will actually get interesting again.
This was just a really bad episode. And the final straw for me was when Milo and Nadia kissed each other. When they both kissed I immediately thought about Tony and Michelle because there were so many moments where Tony just kissed Michelle at CTU. I could deal with that because those two really loved each other. But after Milo and Nadia kissed, I just wanted to throw up. Like seriously, am I suppose to care about these two people? And then we see Chloe looking at them. Are you kidding me? This is like some bad soap opera. I just highly doubt that things are going to get better and it sucks cuz I had some high hopes for this season.

What about the KISS ???????????????? Huh?
You have to admit there was some heat there. I wouldn't mind kissing Nadia like that, just grabbing her like that and going in!

I don't see why Pres. Palmer couldn't come out of a coma and be just fine -- after all, it worked for Meredith Grey. But I'm sure that "brain swelling" will rear its ugly head a few episodes from now just when the plot needs it.
Jack keeps talking to suspects briefly and then sending them on their way, rather than interrogating them to find out what else they know. (Which was particularly stupid in the case of his father.) Brady may be mentally handicapped, but he's apparently been downloading dangerous secrets for his brother for years. Wouldn't it be prudent to ask him a little more about all that?
So Nadia's computer was accessed from the outside, based on information someone got from a website? Didn't anyone at CTU realize it was possible that could happen? And shouldn't they have better security than that? (Oh, right, it's CTU -- the Greyhound Bus station of secret-intelligence agencies.)
Last, but not least, doesn't there need to be an official order putting the president back in power before he can start making executive decisions again? He can't just make a phone call from his hospital bed and say, "I'm all better now." Well, I guess this one can.
Anyway, the best part of this episode was seeing Angela Chase's nerdy neighbor Brian Krakow get a tough-guy role for a change.

I forget, when is that guy going to announce that this whole season is a set-up for one giant conspiracy? Because it just wouldn't be a "24" TV Squad review without him (or her, but probably him).
Also, I agree that this season has become the "Jaws 4" of the series. As of right now, no viewer possibly expects to be amazed by a top-notch plot; everyone is just waiting for the shark to eat a whole bunch of people. That is what "24" has been like this season.

This show seems to not realize the weight of nuclear bomb going off. These characters are so caught up in themselves that they often just ignore the fact that a bomb went off, in their own city even. I just think it's crazy they can be out buying groceries and liquor and also caught up in office romances. I am also amazed with how Jack can teleport around a city that is usually fraught with traffic. Wouldn't the traffic be even worse with everyone trying to escape?
Ah, well it is just a show. An awesome, awesome show.

Great review Meredith and, sadly, right on the mark. In an increasingly bad season, this episode was particularly "off".
Tonight's postings represent well the thoughts of a whole lot of increasingly disappointed viewers. Charles (#4) absolutely nailed the sheer stupidity of the President's "recovery", just the latest in a series of sloppy, improbable time-lines.
Last year was fantastic "must see" tv. Like Charles, I didn't mind "suspending disbelief" over the occasional iffy plot point, 'cause the rest of the wild, suspenseful joy ride still made enough sense. This year, however, we'd have to suspend just about all brain function to avoid noticing the show's lameness.
I have to agree with Tia (#5); it's time to abandon hope for this season... it's a train wreck. There's always a chance next year will be better, just so long as the new team of writers decides to show some greater respect for the intelligence of its fans.

To #6: Ummm... I thought the kiss was stupid and corny. There was nothing "hot" about it. Plus there a lot of things this season that has bugged me, that kiss was one of them.
One of the many problems with this season is because of the ish thats going on at CTU. I don't even care about anyone at CTU anymore. It's wierd cuz there used to be a group of characters at CTU that I actually cared about - Edgar, Tony, Michelle, Curtis - but they're all dead. They have the nerve to kill off so many of these characters and they can't bring in some interesting strong characters for the audience to care about. Who cares about that soap opera-ish stuff thats going on, I'm tired of that dumb love triangle and even before everyone wondering if Morris is drinking again. His butt shoulda been sent home a long time ago cuz of the torture he went through. And I used to care about Chloe but that girl has gotten more annoying.

Shame on you, Big Ted (7) for your churlish reference to Meredith Grey's coma.

25th Amendment, Article 4-- been there, done that; wasn't it Day 2 with President Palmer the First because he didn't want to attack the Middle East?

Great review Meredith - I agree with you completely that this episode was very OFF - and with the most of the comments here that this is the WORST season of 24.
It's a shame because the season got off to a good start and then just went belly up.
This season seems plagued by rehashed plot lines mixed with bad acting on everyone's part.
I'm starting to think that Keifer Sutherland only agreed to be in this season because of winning the Emmy last year. You can see it in his eyes that he's not feeling this season either.

Garbage. Jake you are right. This season is poor. What's worse, they have run out of ideas. An underling trying to unseat the President because they don't like his politics? true its the most gripping part of this episode, but didnt we do this with the last President Palmer? A suspicious CTU employee? Dont we do this 5 times a season?

Sounds like you need a new gig Meredeth, maybe it's time to start writing about Deal or No deal.
As for the lameness of this year's season, maybe yes maybe no. All I know is I still watch it, still enjoy it, still look forward to it. And to all the posters who are critical of this year's show, well you apparently still take the time to watch it so the show can't be all that bad.
And I think Sutherland has been in top form all year. His character is showing some weariness as well as more sensitivity than in years past. And Keifer has played it superbly. Oh, and he hasn't forgotten how to portray the bad ass side of Jack either.
I will agree with other posters that the cast of CTU characters is not as compelling as previous years. I miss Tony, Curtis, Edgar, Michelle too and none of the newbies has stepped up to fill their shoes. I've never bought Wayne Palmer as president, but I think the VP has been one entertaining dude to watch. And I do like Buchanan. And Nadia is hot.

Who is the mysterious assistant to VP Daniels, the unknown half-sister of Jack Bauer - Daddy's little girl? The old man couldn't keep his sons in line. She seems very determined to see this "war" take place. Come on you've got to make up the scenario's to make the show really interesting. How many different characters and stories can you bring on in 24 hours. And where did this guy come from on CTU? He tried to "set-up" Doyle, and within 2 min. it was resolved - or was it?

I think last season was so unbelievable that a letdown was inevitable, and it feels like the writers are straining themselves to create drama at the expense of logic. This season almost feels like a cartoon.
That being said, I think that what I'm enjoying the most this season is the fact that I really have absolutely no idea where this is headed, and I really want to find out.
