Immediately following Tuesday night's show, many commenters and bloggers were speculating that the "little girl who cried" was "a plant" or an actress paid by either Sanjaya's family or the show's producers. Others surmised that she was merely one of the executive producer's kids or special guests getting some extra screen time.Turns out she is 13-year-old Ashley Ferl from Riverside, California. Apparently, Ashley and her mom had gotten tickets for a taping of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. Their tickets allowed them to attend a dress rehearsal for Idol. Ashley began the waterworks during the rehearsals, was spotted by a producer, and was offered prime seats for Tuesday's show.
While Idol's cameras focused on Ashley during Sanjaya's performance, making it appear that he was her favorite, she apparently cried throughout the show. She also told the Los Angeles Times that she supports Sanjaya, Melinda, Gina, and Jordin all equally.
So why exactly did Idol give Ashley so much camera time and attention, even bringing her up on stage for a group hug? Well, it gave us all something to talk about, didn't it? It created some live, unscripted drama. And it clearly boosted Sanjaya's ego. But for the audience at home, it also felt like a stunt. Many people questioned its authenticity. Have we really become such a cynical society that we now mistrust the tears of little girls?
I think that in any other arena, Ashley's tears would have seemed sweet and sincere. But in Idol's big glaring arena, it all appeared a bit staged and fake. Wasn't it convenient that a young girl, resembling Marcia Brady, cried hysterically during British Invasion week?

I wonder what would happen if something emotional happened to her that was actually of any importance.

I wondered whether anyone realize that the kid cried through the whole show. When Melinda was singing they put the camera on her and she was crying for her also. Sorry, it wasn't juts for Sanjaya.

I never thought it was a stunt. I thought it was sweet they gave her so much attention, and they brought her on stage, and hugged her.(Ryan Seacrest is a softy) I did start to worry, though that there is something wrong with this kid. I mean she never stopped crying.

I THINK THE JUDGING PROCESS NEEDS TO CHANGE. MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE ON DANCING WITH THE STARS, WHERE 50% IS BASED ON THE VIEWERS AND THE OTHER 50% IS BASED ON THE JUDGES. AFTER ALL THEY REALLY KNOW WHAT GOOD SINGING IS ALL ABOUT. I DON'T MEAN POPULARITY BY LOOKS OR ETHNICS BUT BY VOCALS. IF THINGS DO NOT CHANGE THERE WILL BE ALOT OF VIEWERS WHO DECIDE NOT TO WATCH AMERICAN IDOL ANYMORE, MYSELF INCLUDED. THIS MAY BE ONE OF THE WORST SEASONS OF POOR JUDGEMENT. SANJAYA HAS TO BE THE WORST. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT HE IS IN THE TOP 10 MAKING HIM PART OF THE TOUR. MY GIRLFRIEND AND I HAVE GONE TO 2 TOURS AT NASSAU COLISEUM AND ENJOYED THEM IMMENSLEY BUT I WOULD HAVE RATHER SEEN STEPHANIE THERE THEN SANJAYA. HOPEFULLY THE SHOW WILL GET BACK TO WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT, SO PLEASE CHANGE THE VOTING SYSTEM.

What is wrong here ,when we take a kid that cannot sing like Sanjaya and let go a girl that has so much talent is this all about money or talent,or about a crying kid all through the show, that did seem as if someone was paying her to cry.Let's get back to talent

I agree with you F'gdle Mom on the voting situation.
If they do not change the way it is done I will no
longer watch. Actually, after last night I do not
think I will watch again this season until the last
night. It as taken on a sense of fakeness for me.
What are the judges for? For us to moan and grone
at what they say as does the audience. Is that it?
It is very near getting to be like the old Gong Show.
It is not about humiliating people...as Simon says...
it is about the vocals.
Who ever OKed having on that crying girl should be]
demoted. It was very obvious that she has an emotional problem. They took advantage of her in my opinion...
Actually, they are ruining a good thing....

Actually, the cynicism of the producers and the crying midget is perfect. American Idol is really nothing more than The Gong Show meets a Karaoke competition. But on a national scale. And the populace has, inexplicably, made these people stars. I Occassionally talent pushes through, but it's purely a popularity contest.
Okay, all that said, the show is a powerhouse.
What I find interesting is that, all things MUST come to an end. So, I wonder, how and when will it end for AI? When will it jump the shark? It "seems" to be a juggernaut.
But, a series of events have occured this year, culminating in the weeping child:
The choices of contestants is suspect. There is not a real talent in the crowd except for Doolittle. Perhaps the producers were so intent on finding the laughable talent for the first half of the season that they dropped the ball looking for "the best!"
The judges also are different. Almost apathetic. Paula is drunk, sure. But Randy is surly and virtually non supportive and Simon is disinterested.
Then there is the callousness of planting the little crying girl and showing her during Manjyna so that she could work sympathy magic and get him through to the tour.
Add to this the inevitable backlash of Vote for the Worst and Howard Stern's said endorsement and I think this is a recipe for shark bait.
I, for one, will be voting at least 10 times a night for Sandyjyna. Now, I want him to win.

Emotional problems? I guess all those crazy chicks from the 60s freaking out over The Beatles had mental problems, too?
Every year Idol has a contestants that stays longer than they should...but by the finale we usually have the right people going for the big prize.

Honestly, what I do is turn away from the TV and not watch the performance, just LISTEN to the countestants (it is a SINGING competition right?). Maybe if people did that for Sanjaya they would realize what they were doing andf hopefully change it. Seriously WTF!

Little girls get excited, and when they do, they cry. Back when Hanson was big, I went to a concert (don't laugh), and the girls behind me were crying so hard, they practically fainted. I don't think there's any funny business here.

I saw keep Sangaya, and let all the good one loses. The true winners of AI have always been the people who were good and came in the top 12.

I THINK SANJAYA SHOULD OF NOT EVEN MADE IT THROUGH THE FIRST ROUND. WHY HE IS STILL THERE? WHO KNOWS ISN'T AMERICAN IDOL SUPPOSE TO BE JUDGED ON VOCAL CAUSE LET ME TELL YOU SANJAYA HAS NO VOCAL TALLENT AT ALL I THINK THIS SEASON OF AMERICAN IDOL IS THE WORST OF ALL AS FAR AS VOTING. I JUST HOPE AT THE END OF ALL THIS SANJAYA DOES NOT COME OUT WITH THE WIN. THIS WILL REALLY BE THE LAST TIME I EVER SEE AMERICAN IDOL.

As an avid fan of American Idol, I must say, I am deeply disappointed with this season. Sanjaya, for the life of me, I can't understand how he made it as far as he has, since he lacks in vocal skills. You have had some talented young men and women who have come and gone, who truly should have been there, and yet they were let go.
As suggested by others, the voting system needs to be changed: Either 50% judges' vote, 50% American public; or, have it like our political system, American public can vote, but that will be the popular vote, and the judges' vote will be the real arbitors of who will win.

As it has clearly been identified. This is truly a woman's competition this year. I agree that Stephanie should not have been cut before Sanjaya, but the fact still is, she's not in the top running contestants. I personally think the final three standing should be Melinda, Lakiesha, and Jordin, with at this moment, Melinda taking it all. However, as we all can see, anything can happen...take for instant the Milli Vanilli fiasco. They weren't even singing and cut a record. The truth is, they need to leave the voting up to the judges that they picked. They may not always be right, but atleast we know we will ultimately get real talent out of the show.

I know I sure felt like it was a stunt especially with it being LA. I wondered if this kid wasn't some child actor either "hired" by Idol and or being urged on by a stage mom hoping the possible camera time might give the kid her "big break." Call me cynical if you want but I live in CA and there are many people not above doing something like this.
As for Sanjaya and the voting, yeah, something needs to be done. I don't like playing the race card but in addition to the Sanjaya judger naught consisting of millions of giggly teenage girls with unlimited cell phone minutes I also think it's the "Ballywood" contingent. They are so happy to be represented they are voting "just because," not based on his singing. (A suggestion for people planning on attending one of the AI Tour concerts: when Sanjaya comes on stage for his solo use it as an opportunity to go to the rest room or to the snack bar for nachos.) :)
I like the "Dancing with the Stars" 50%/50% voting suggestion and or "one phone, one vote" (once the computer registers a vote from a particular phone number that phone can't vote again) which would, hopefully, force some to just vote for the actual best singing and not several other votes for "so-in-so" because they're "HOT!" And I'm hoping to God that they bring back the wild card. Remember that? The judges got to bring back two(?) contestants voted off that they felt deserved a second chance based on they're singing abilities.
I got so fed up with the voting one year I boycotted the show the following year (it was the year Carrie Underwood won). I’m seriously thinking of doing it again on permanently this time. This show is almost about the “jump the shark” with me. The only reason I’m still hanging around now is because the ones I feel are the most talented haven’t been voted off yet. I felt Stephanie was really talented and one of the people with the “whole package” (vocals, good looks, and articulate) but I feel part of her dismissal is her own fault because of bad song choices. When they showed her goodbye video last night I thought, “Why didn’t she sing on the show the way she did in the audition – and that first week of voting?!” Argh!
As for Sanjaya and the voting, yeah, something needs to be done. I don't like playing the race card but in addition to the Sanjaya jergernaught being based with gigly teenage girls with unlimitted cell phone minutes I also think it's the "Ballywood" contingent. They are so happy to be represented they are voting "just because," not based on his singing. I like the "Dancing with the Stars" 50%/50% voting ideal and or "one phone, one vote" (once the computer registers a vote from a particular phone number that phone can't vote again) which would, hopefully, force some to actually vote for the best talent and not also a couple votes for "so-in-so" because they're "HOT!" And I hoping to God that they bring back the wild card. Remember that? The judges got to bring back two(?) contestants voted off that they felt deserved a second chance because of they're singing abilites.
