I have to admit that I have a strong appreciation for a television show that knows when its story has been told, when it has approached its final chapter and chooses to say "The End." The better the show is, the more I find this to be an important realization for the creators (and the networks!) to come to recognize and accept. The New York Post is reporting that the creators of Battlestar Galactica have it in mind for the show's fourth season to be its last, a season which just recently got the OK for the full 22-episodes. It's not a set-in-stone plan ... yet. But as much as I love the show, I think this could be the way for it to go out on a high note (and let's not forget the planned 2-hour season-gap-bridging movie). It's refreshing to know that the creators have a plan and they're going to see it through, and not allow it to be milked beyond its capacity.
Since creator Ron Moore has said before that the planned spin-off series, Caprica, hasn't been picked up yet, I could see the plan being to end Battlestar should Caprica get a greenight. If Caprica hits a stop, maybe there will be a way to see Battlestar continue past its prime, but just for a little bit. I only wish other popular shows could follow the same example, but for some it's already too late.

Yes, this is necessary. It's hard to sustain a mythology with a long-running television show. There are too many things that need to be done to keep tension threading through the narrative. BSG can only hit the reset button so many times. Ron Moore said in a recent podcast that he sees the show in the home stretch. I applaud them for admitting they need to quit while on top.
I also have no need to see the Caprica show, but if they have a need to produce it, I'll likely watch it.

Can we get some better sources first of all?
Second I hope they do two mini seasons, 10 and 10, we don't need to watse 6 episodes next year like they have the last few. I still like 13 episodes for season 4 and 13 episodes for season 5.

How about right over at scifi.com:

I seriously doubt there will be 2 mini seasons. We are going to get the 2 hour movie in the fall and then we will get 20-22 episodes (it is not clear yet if that 22 order includes the movie or not) in Janurary and run straight through.
Not a single episode in season 3 was wasted. I seriously wish you people would understand that the "filler" episodes are just as important to the overall story as the arc episodes.

I couldn't agree more. I would much rather see a series end on a high note rather than peter out into nothingness. BSG has been one of the finest dramas on television; although, the later half of season three was hard two watch until recently. I would much rather it end on a high note, a spectacular one at that, than wait for the suits at Sci Fi to yank the carpet out from under the series like they did with Farscape. I just wish the series could have receives some much deserved recognition in the form of Emmys for Olmos, Sackhoff, McDonnell, and Helfer. Not to mention for Best Drama. Hell, if 24 can win why not BSG? At the very least, I'll give credit to Sci Fi for taking a chance on the Ron Moore's vision of what this series could be.
Of course, this whole euology could be moot if the ratings turn around.

I agree with #3, while the filler episodes may not be filled with the fiery-blaze-of-Galactica-falling-through-atmosphere-action,
they still provide awesome insights to how these 40,000 people function. They let us know what its like to really live in a group of nomadic spaceships. They address issues that other shows would ignore, like labor rights, diseases, etc. And the writers never cop out. They always deal with issues the hard way, and succesfully.

Ratings have increased since they moved to Sundays. Currently BSG is the flagship series for Sci-Fi. Why do people keep saying that the 4th will be the last season when there is NO REPLACEMENT IN SIGHT FOR THE NETWORK? It's just stupid and obnoxious. First people say that 14 episodes means IMMEDIATE CANCELATION, now that they get a bigger pick up including a DVD movie people are STILL screaing IMMEDIATE CANCELATION. Just stop it.

Akbar, I agree that filler episodes outside of the main series storyline can be very important. For instance, I think the best episodes of the X-Files were the quirky filler episodes. However, season 3 of BSG has been a disappointment for me and the filler episodes have been lackluster.
My personal opinion without any facts to back it up is that the producers have been a little too distracted this year by other projects and the writing has noticeably suffered. The same thing happened to Lost I think.
It would be great if they could just concentrate on making the movie and season 4 of BSG as good as the first 2 seasons.

Well thanks for trying to pass your opinions as fact, to me and many other fans several of the episode this seaosn and last have been bad or a waste. Even Moore himself has said that about a few season 2 episodes.
And Sci-fi wasn't the source that was link, it was "comingsoon.com".
And the ratings have not increased, overall they have gone down or stayed the same. Sci-fi came out with the 13 episode order they didn't say it was because of amazing ratings, they said it was because the show gives them credit in the TV world. If the ratings fall more it will end.
And Moore said he planned for 5 seasons, which the cast also says, but he said he can see doing 6, but that was before most of season 3 was filmed and he seems to go back after each season and see where they are.

Well Nick, SciFi did mention a while ago AFTER the initial 13 episode run that if they expanded the run it would probably be to end the series. I for one would like to see it end. Make the story that much more poignant.

I have always thought good drama shows should only go 4-5 seasons to keep the story relevant and unique. Lost will be doing this, and I think it would be great if BSG did the same. As much as most fans want a show to go on "forever" BSG has an obvious end point and it is pertinent to get there in a reasonable amount of time.
#6 - The show isn't being canceled. The creators just know to quit while you're ahead.

Kudos should go to the network for allowing a hit show to end gracefully, too. The networks could very easily see a show as a cash cow and just let it run until ratings no longer prove profitable -- damn the viewers if the show loses its edge, as long as they're still coming to watch.

4/5 seasons is more than enough for a TV show, and I'm sure Ron Moore and co. already had an idea how to end the show and how long it'll last.
Also, these are 20+ seasons compared to the usual 12 episodes for a cable drama.

It does not matter to me when it ends as long as it ends well. Wrap it with a red bow and let Kara and Lee - Adama and Laura ride off into an earth sunset.

As much as I love this show, I'm really pleased to hear that it could end after 4 seasons. Season 4 could resolve all the elements build up over these three seasons--or, you know, not. I'm find either way! And it's BECAUSE I love the show that I'm pleased; I would just hate to see it peter out into boring or inconsistent or low-quality episodes or storylines (I'm looking at YOU, BtVS). I totally salute Moore and Eick for this! And if SciFi doesn't have an anchor show to take its place, that's their problem, not R&D's. (Although I say Eureka could do it--man, I liked that show.)

It's nice that we're getting a full 22 but I'd be really surprised if this wasn't the last season. It's an expensive series.
