Bones: The Boneless Bride in the River

Temperance Brennand and Seely Booth

(S02E16) Here's the first thing I thought of when Seely Booth was chasing down that potential suspect, the one who paid for the Chinese bride whose skeleton was forcibly removed from her skin: 'Gee, Angel would have caught him in a second!' This came to mind because the scene was so reminiscent of something you would have seen on Angel, with people running, flipping and jumping across buildings. The difference here is that Booth isn't as agile as Angel was. Well that, and the fact that Booth isn't an immortal vampire with a soul. Still it would have been cool to see.

Good episode this week, with a lighter tone than normal. Not too light, though, because it's fairly hard to be light-hearted when your show features as much gore as this show does. It just seemed that everyone was a bit more amusing than normal. .

For example, Hodgins and Zach inserting a balloon into the victims skull-less head and inflating it to see if they could determine who she was. Then there was Angela's speech about the victim and her husband, married in a Chinese bone marriage ceremony, and how they seemed perfect together and that somewhere their spirits were happy that their skeletons were now paired up. She was so intrigued about it that she decided to draw a wedding portrait of them, with their skins on of course. I guess you need to do something to relieve the tension when you see skeletons and decomposing bodies everywhere

Moving on, this the first thing that popped into my head when Sully asked Bones to join him on his sailing journey to the Caribbean: 'This ain't happening!' I have to admit that Sully was growing on me, even though he seemed to be a bit of a whiner at times, and I was sorry to see him go. But, it just seemed that his character was getting tired of seeing dead bodies and needed a change. But to think that Temperance was going to join him . . . he don't no her very well, do he? Yes, yes, I'm sure the fact that she was going to leave Booth was one of the reasons that she stayed, but I really think the reason was that she enjoys her job and it is her life, whereas Sully's career in the FBI was almost a fling.

His departure will probably mean some kind of turning point in Booth and Bones' relationship over the next few weeks. As I've said previously I don't think a romantic relationship between these two characters would work. While they work well together as partners their personalities differ greatly. Booth is a seat-of-your-pants, impulsive type of guy, even with the therapy, while Bones is definitely analytical. Any type of romantic relationship between the two would certainly be full of disagreements and could potentially end up hurting their business relationship. Then again, the producers of the show may have no intention whatsoever of getting these two together. So, all I've said is just moot.

I'll conclude this week's review by talking about the episode's mystery. Interesting. I wouldn't have thought that it was the woman who arranged the mail-order marriage when I first saw her. In fact, I had no idea who it was until the alleged suspect said that her agency actually lost money in the deal when he didn't want to be with her. I did like how the investigation progressed from how the original victim died to how she was connected to another set of bones found at another Chinese family's house.

Stephen Fry is back next week as Booth's therapist and there may be a revelation a-brewing. See you in seven days.
