Since her first appearance on Lost as plane crash survivor Nikki, fans of the show have not been embracing the actress. Part of it may be because her character, as well as Rodrigo Santoro's Paulo, sort of appeared out of nowhere (even though Nikki was supposedly in the background since season 1). Part of it may also be because the writing for her character has not been stellar. Part of it is surely also because fans do not know who Kiele Sanchez is.Now that Nikki (and Kiele) is about to be put front and center in episode "Exposé" airing on March 28 at 10 p.m. on ABC, it's time fans get to know who Kiele Sanchez is.
I never knew 29-year-old Sanchez before her work on The WB's Related. In this short-lived series, Kiele Sanchez was provided great scenes to show her range as an actress. She may not be the best actress out there, but she able to make fans believe in her character and the emotions she was going through in that series. Her roles before Related are quickly resumed by "pilots who were not picked up as full series" and "background characters in movies".
Most people probably don't know, since it's not on her IMDb profile, but Kiele started acting on stage at age 13. She got her first break when she participated in MTV'S Wanna Be a VJ contest in New York in 2000. She ended in the top five but did not win. However, her performance was enough for an agent to want to represent her and so began her TV acting career.
Kiele deserves to be given a chance by Lost fans. Let's hope that the March 28 episode of Lost will allow fans to get to know her more. The episode is said to focus Nikki and Paulo in a way that will have fans change their minds about the characters and stop despising them. This Nikki and Paulo-centric episode is even supposed to have both characters become "iconic characters" as Damon Lindelof recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly. It is unknown how long she will stay on Lost as she is attached to the Football Wives pilot, ABC's version of the famous British show Footballers' Wives.

Context is decisive. Lost really blew it when they introduced this season's new characters. Maybe the should have used Boston Legal's way of introducing new characters this season. ;)
That being said, Kiele is an attractive actress and I would definitely like to see how she would fit into the storyline. With so many passengers, if they do it right I would welcome interesting new storylines.

She wasn't a "tailie". Anna Lucia, Eko, Libby, Bernard (where IS Bernard, anyway?) and Cindy were tailies. But not Nikki.

I don't hate those two new characters and I think a lot of other people who complain about these two coming out of nowhere don't, either. My frustration over them is born out of the feeling that there's already plenty of established, but underused characters on the island already, any of whom could be used in whatever storyline/fate is in store for Nikki and Paulo. I have a feeling that may be more of the general sentiment regarding these two than simple hatred of the characters themselves.

I don't hate her, but I resent the clumsy way those two were introduced, with Locke saying, "Nikki, Paulo, come here!"
I also resent the line: "They are supposed to become iconic characters on the show," after being introduced at what is likely just past the halfway point in the series. Plus, they were introduced after killing Libby, Ana-Lucia, and Eko, so it felt like she was Jon Lovitz replacing the dead Phil Hartman on News Radio. If they try to make her important to the story by having her be related to Ben, or being Jacob's daughter, that will be weak. She likely does have some tie to the others, since everyone on the plane has ignored her for what, 65 or 70 days? Somebody would have recognized her if she touched their lives in any way.
And if her pilot is picked up, are they going to kill her off?
I have nothing against the actress, though I don't care that she tried out for MTV. (Does everyone on the planet have a fan site and a Wikipedia entry yet?)

Larry: Thanks for catching it. My brain must have been out when I wrote that first sentence.

Jack: I'll rephrase my "iconic" sentence. I see now it must not be clear enough. Lindelof said that after their flashback episodes, Nikki and Paulo will become iconic episode.
She is "attached" to the pilot. So my guess is that if Lost wants to keep her, she'll stay with Lost. If not, she'll go to Football Wives series if it gets picked up.

First comment says "My frustration over them is born out of the feeling that there's already plenty of established, but underused characters on the island already, any of whom could be used in whatever storyline/fate is in store for Nikki and Paulo."
And I have a theory which may be related to that, but I get it backwards...
I think the creators/writers had a very important role to be played by two major characters they had to kill by network/resources reasons: Shannon and Boone. And that´s a hole they have to fill...
Maybe most of the Shannon/Boone storyline may have be discarded, but if they have early plans for the late fate of the characters, now (my guess) is that Paulo and Nikky will play that part in the story.

Does anyone remember the golf episode from Season One? There was a bespectacled guy who liked to play golf? He was never seen or heard from again. It was assumed he would fade into the background, like the rest of the non central survivors.
Thing is, with Hurley, Kate, Sawyer and Jack abducted, Michael and Walt on the ocean, Jin, Sun and Sayid on an adventure, there aren't that many losties left at the beach. So, what? Locke, Charlie and Claire AREN'T going to talk to anyone else? Of course they had to be introduced as innocuously as possible. Otherwise everyone would start thinking, oh, they are Others and that wasn't the plot thread at that point, regardless of whether or not that is the truth.
Nikki and Paolo don't bother me one bit. In fact, I wouldn't mind an episode focusing on everhy other survivor that is just a bitch session of "Why aren't WE involved in those decisions?" Maybe they have a leader of their own? They MUST have had some kind of adventures. Give me an episode of those guys. I would love it.

The big problem is that you have a fixed # of people on the plane. Some % of those people are the primary plot drivers (Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Sayid), some % are the 2nd level (Sun, Jin, Charlie, Hurley, Claire), some % come and go ( Libby, Anna-Lucia, Mr Eko, Michael, Boone, Sharon) but you can't just decide to make characters come in from the background half way into the series.
It's another example on how the writers of Lost have painted themselves into too many corners as the series has progressed. They really have no clue on how to proceed.

All of these things play into why Nikki and Paulo are despised by the real fans of this show.
Their clumsy intro, the fact that their spot could have easily been filled by some of the dearly departed cast members (Eko, still pissed about that one)or even regular cast members such as Rose and Bernard.
As far as this 'iconic' tag goes, I really think the only way for something like this to happen, would be if they were Others, or at least working with the Others, because anything else would be weak, and I mean WEAK.
Nikki and Paulo's characters are already hated, so if this 'iconic' tease doesn't play out, they better be able to run pretty fast, along with Cuse and Lindelof, away from the angry mob of disappointed Lost fans, which seems to grow more and more as time goes by.
And as a last note, I really do think the writers know where they're going with the whole story. Obviously some things are on the fly, but I think they have the framework and end game already set, they just need to get us there.

I agree with the comments that Nikki/Paulo are not hated simply for themselves, but instead of the way they were introduced. Many fans are frustrated with the multiple storylines and characters, and adding two more will further complicate things (I, for one, like the complicated story arcs).
Part of the problem, I think, is that they threw in two more 'beautiful people'. Seems kinda like a cheap ploy by the producers to get ratings in the young people crowd. Had they stuck with Rose/Bernard in these roles, most would have been happier.
I like the theory that Nikki/Paulo will fill the void left by SHannon/Boone. Good observation that these two 'newbies' might have been created spur of the moment to fill the gap that the sacrificial lambs left behind in the grand story arc.

I dont hate them but I donot like it when Lost just introduces characters out of the blue except Desmond who is fantastic. From the first season we got hooked on the original losties and their social dynamics etc. So I just hate it when they ignore the original cast and bring irritating characters! So not looking forward to the Nikki flashback! Just kill them pls.
