If you had plans to see Tom Wolpat and John Schneider of the Dukes of Hazzard perform with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, you'll have to wait. The performance, which was supposed to be based on the Dukes of Hazzard, was canceled when several people complained about the series' racist content.
Conductor Erich Kunzel contacted NAACP prez Edith Thrower (Cincinnati branch), who in turn contacted NAACP headquarters and was told not to support the concert due to the show's depiction of the Confederate flag.
This reminds me of something that happened to a friend of mine in college: he was wearing an old Dukes of Hazzard t-shirt and was chastised by another "friend" because of the small, faded Confederate flag shown on the roof of the General Lee. Both of these cases seems to me like an example of picking your battles, and focusing on the real issues rather than a goofy show that was steeped more in Southern pride than any kind of bigotry. No sane person would deny that racism still exists in America, but if the goal is to kill the beast, it makes much more sense to go after the vital organs that keep said beast alive, rather than jabbing away at a television series whose only real crime was being kind of cheesy.

I'm from the South but I still have mixed feelings about this story. It seems wrong to use the Confederate Flag as a symbol of "southern pride". Just like if someone were German it would be wrong for them to use the Nazi Flag as some kind of German pride thing. These things symbolize a dark time in history so why can't they stay back there?

I think there's a lot missing from this story which is crucial to understanding it. If it's just Wopat and Schneider singing with the orchestra, then this is stupid. But if they're singing under a conferderate banner, I think there's an issue. And if it really is the latter, then just get rid of the imagery and the concert goes on.
But we really don't know what the issue is here, cause the reporting on it, in general, is way too vague.

Do anyone remember that there is such a racist scene on Dukes of Hazzard show? I doubt.

Heres the thing, the South/Confederation didn't ONLY stand for slavery. There were many many other ideals as well. Now, does flying an American flag today mean that you're in support of the imperialism, and the war we're fighting in Iraq just because thats what the administration is for? Nope, being proud of your country and your heritage doesn't mean you have to support every single ideal that the governing entity of said country and heritage stood for. Stop looking for reasons to be pussy hurt.

Everyone needs to grow up and quit playing the "race card". That flag stands for heritage not hate. I'm tired of having to pussy foot around all of you liberal, sensitive jerks. Get a life and get over it. Maybe everyone should focus on the good things instead of always trying to find something negative. The Confederate flag is about southern heritage and has nothing to do with slavery.

Some of us should just get over it. It's entertainment as was Hogan's Heroes and other shows that had a slight political tilt. Dukes was about Boss Hogg and the young rebels who opposed him. The show was set in the rural south in the '60s. What did you expect, a soviet union flag on the roof?
We've become a nation of politically correct whiners. This screams weakness to the rest of the world and emboldens our enemies. If Al Qaeda paddled a canoe up the Potomac, went to Congress, and demanded that the infidels surrender, some of our illustrious politicians would fall all over themselves to sign the surrender documents.
Thought For Today - If "W" had a 'D' after his name we'd all be living in paradise.

This is the most retarded thing I have ever heard. The Dukes of Hazzard were as far from a racist show as you could get. The values on that show were about as G rated as possible.
This was a show that could air at 8pm with no problem.
Anyone protesting this is a first class jerk.

Gee, Southern Girl, I had no idea that being liberal or sensitive translated into "jerk."
Typical good ole conservative southern knee-jerk reactionism.
You know, you're right. You should keep your confederate flag. It really does do a great job depicting your values and what you represent, not to mention why the rest of the country always sees the south as a couple of IQ points lower.

No no no no no no no.
The confederate flag has been misunderstood for a very long time.
The analogy of a Nazi flag is not an accurate one.
The confederate flag was a symbol of freedom to many a Rebel Solder during the Civil War (which, contrary to popular belief had nothing to do with slavery or racism until Lincoln made it about slavery).
That is why the confederate flag is a symbol of southern pride.
The flag was then adopted by a racist group, unfortunately, and that is why it now carries such a negative connotation.
And "nukethewhalesagain" you may be from the south but you are by no means Southern if that is what you truly believe.

@ Southern Gal - A lot of people are quick to say that the South under the Confederacy stands for a lot of things other than Slavery. I am sure that is the case but everything that the South stands for was built on the backs of slaves. Whether it be agriculture, cuisine, or art and culture -- it was all made possible by slavery. The Confederate flag stands for everything that was built on the backs of a slave economy. It also stands for the people who turned their backs on the ideals set forth by the founders of this country for financial gain based on a slave economy!
Having said that, I have no problem with the concert or the guys from the Dukes of Hazzard getting together to sing. Flying a Confederate flag over them while they're doing it or using it to market the event is COMPLETELY unnecessary. The Flag is not what sells the show -- the actors and the cheezy plotlines are what sells the show!
Your ignorance of history is astounding. After WWII, the German government had to write laws stating that the history books and schools HAD to acknowledge the Holocaust. I wish they would write laws in this country to outlaw teaching children that the Confederacy stood for anything aside from slavery and rebellion. Perhaps if that were done after the Civil War, the ignorance that you're spouting would have been stomped out in our society by now.

Societies usually learn that their outdated ideas and symbols can indeed be wrong. Usually after a seperatist goverenment is quashed their leaders are killed and their symbols are made illegal. In America we didn't do that. So is it your right as an American to fly that flag, absolutely. Is it my right as an American to see that flag as a symbol of past racism and agression absolutely. So if I decide to protest its my right to do so.
The show reached millions of people and uses that symbol as part of its logo. That's the reason why this protest happened. Would I fight that particular front in this? No, but only because there are people that will. Some seek to villify the people who associate with the item, others seek to hurt them financially; as a writer and filmmaker I think the item itself should be shown the disrespect it symbolizes. My current favorite would be this.

Tom, al Qaeda wouldn't paddle a rowboat up the Potomac, the current administration is their best recruiting tool since the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. But if they did don't forget the Democrats are secretly in league with them we've already decided that we listen to them. That's why so many former servicemen that fought in Iraq came back and ran as Dems in the congressional elections. Only in this current political climate could the guy defending the flag of a non existent country tell me that I'm not a good American because I'm a Democrat. I'd tell you to grow up but obviously you're so old that you actually belive the things you're saying so I'll just take comfort in the fact that your ideals are dying out, and that as a 25 year old man I'll outlive all this useless partisanship.
After southern pride, and stupid liberals, all we need now is the "blacks use the n-word with each other" argument.

justelise- Everything that the USA is today was built on the backs of slaves. What started this country, or really got it going anyway, was tobacco in Virginia being sold to England. Who raised that tobacco? Slaves.
You can't Blame one section of the country and not the other.
Now it is your ignorance that is astounding.
Look into Jamestown, the first (permanent) English settlement and you'll see slaves and indentured servants. The roots of this ENTIRE country were planted with Slavery and to just blame the South (although Jamestown is in Virginia, it was long before there was a North and South) is ignoring a lot of history.
It's the victorious that get to write history, and the South lost, so unless you have actually done any research on the subject, (aside from what you were taught/brain washed in school) then you have no room to talk.

I come from a long line of Alabama heritage yet I grew up on the "North" side. People need to grow up. For nukethewhalesagain, you talk about the nazi symbols but people who want (and I'm not one) to wear these bands around their arms are allowed. As for Dawn, I do think people who have nothing esle to do but find things in this country to criticize about are JERKS and need to use their energy for positive things. I happen to be a decendent of native americans so you want to talk about racizim let's start there. We live in a country that allows us extreme freedoms and those freedoms should be respected not used as a "Flag" of injustice. And by the way your Lincoln was in favor of letting the south keep their slaves he just didn't want it to be able to expand to other states as the south grew. He "USED" slavery as a ploy of sympothy to rally the people around him so they would put their lives on the line for his purpose of not wanting to lose. I love this country, ALL of it. We allow imigrants to fly the flag of their country if they choose. There is no difference for people of the south to display the confederate flag. LET FREEDOM RING. Oh and "Look away Look away Look away (if you don't like what you see) Dixie Land......Proud to be an american and proud of my southern heritage.....

Considering that the use of slaves in America is still fairly recent history, even if it is an unreasonable request to remove the confederate flag, it should be done.
Again, we're not talking thousands of years ago but only a couple generations. Not to mention that black americans didn't even have the vote only a few decades ago.
It's easy for 'southern gal' to shrug it off. Of course it is. She wasn't negatively affected by it so it's as easy for her to shrug it off just as it's probably as easy for her to shrug off the murder of thousands of Iraqis by her country.

Last time I checked, it is called Freedom of Speech. A flag is not racists, people who have nothing more to complain about and want 15 minutes of fame are the racists.
If you don't like it, don't go to the concert.

One has to keep in mind that symbols, regardless of their original intent, take on different meanings with the passing of time. The swastica is actually a symbol of protection and was used by people much earlier than the nazi's to ward off evil. That is the original meaning - but that has changed and no one ever sees this symbol and thinks of anything but genocide and Hitler. I was born in Texas, and the confederate flag may be a symbol of pride for some southerners, but to others it is a sign of oppression because that is how it was used. Keep in mind that the KKK flies the confederate flag and once a symbol is tainted in that way we must understand the harm and hurt it causes others.
