(S03E19) Don't you sort of have a love-hate relationship with the final episodes of your favorite shows? There's the heightened anticipation of what's typically some of the best episodes of the season, while at the same time you get that disappointing feeling in your gut when you realize things are soon coming to an end. Two-part finales are cruel.
No early podcast this week, which is a good thing for purists who want to keep surprised as each episode airs.
Random thought: If there are humans still left on New Caprica, would it be possible then that they'd be alive in some way and able to continue living? Were they reliant on most of the technology upon the ships that were forced to leave them behind, or are they as good as dead? The nuke was never set off, right?
Some of you commenters may be onto something with the whole Balter-as-Jesus thing, that Moore's intention has been for Baltar to appear and almost become a Jesus-like figure in the eyes of some of the residents of the fleet. I certainly wouldn't say that his appearance will have anything at all to do with the relationship later to Earth, though; it's just a metaphor.
Lampkin may have been right in explaining that Baltar's decision to surrender is likely the reason the human population on Galactica is *only* missing 5,197 people. I say "may have been" because I'm not so sure Roslin wouldn't have also surrendered. In their condition at that time, what choice would they have had?
Definitely an odd sight seeing Lee in a pinstripes rather than his military uniform. It seemed that Bill Adama knew why Roslin was again taking kamala extract, which is why he was moving to put a stop to the question. Still, it was infuriating for the Admiral to so vehemently try to stop Lee's questioning in the way he did.
Getting back to Lee handing in his wings, it wasn't all that a surprising move. In fact, it was inevitable that he'd want to completely step out from under his father's shadow, and since he's rather stranded within the fleet, this is probably one of the final gestures he could have made in order to clear his mind and do what he feels is the right thing by the law.
But why would Roslin not choose to go through with the same "cure" once again? Maybe she's a kamala junkie? I guess the opening sequence to this episode may lend a hint, where Sharon and she were chasing Hera. They both want Hera to be alive and safe, though their reasons may not be in sync.
As for the music that Tigh and Anders are hearing, all I can say is that it's definitely an interesting new twist. I have read some of the unavoidable (for me) spoilers out there regarding this particular detail of the finale, and I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. Obviously only select people can hear it, but why?
Definitely a step in a better direction with this episode, and the case of Baltar is much better than I'd thought it could be already. One more episode, everyone!
Current fleet population: 41,399

Oh man. I'm spoiler free so I hope no one uses these comments to talk about the music thing. I also found it interesting and can't wait until next week to find out what's happening. With that and also with Tory. What is going on with her? Can't wait!
I definitely feel the heightened anticipation. This episode was fraktastic! If two weeks ago was the KARA EPISODE this was clearly the LEE EPISODE. His scenes with his father and then with Roslin were some of the best of the series between two people. I was practically covering my eyes when Lee was interrogating Roslin. That was some good TV.

Definately Spoiled, but will leave that out of it (Not that I really think that the important thing about the music, which is the why, is covered in the spoilers I read).
I'll chime in with more comments later, but I wanted to post what I found on the SciFi boards. RDM did a 'ask me 20 questions' post:
QUOTE(rswhite1989 @ Mar 9 2007, 12:15 AM)
Did Lee or did Lee not see (or think he saw) the Cylon Radar in Maelstrom?
He didn't see it.

I think Roslin's choice to take the kamala is because, like she said, she believes the kamala "enables her to see certain things" that are messages from the gods.
How far in advance do they film these things? The prosecutor saying she served at the pleasure of the president was very timely given current events... I'm curious if it was a happy accident or intentional.
And yeah, I'm super spoiler paranoid, so thanks for avoiding mentioning the music thing.

This is definitely one of those episodes that really get you pumped for the season finale. What is with that music, and why is it "in the frakking ship"?!
There are some things that really stood out in this episode for me:
- Tigh, why get all piss-ass drunk again, now? Didn't he clean up a bit for the past 6 episodes or so?
- Roslyn, I think there's something more to her story than what we heard in this episode... I just can't put my finger on it, but I don't think it's as "simple" as we think it is.
- Baltar/Six and Six/Baltar... is it me, or is this the first time they didn't use that familiar musical cue that they usually do when you see their visions? I'm always one to notice music in shows, movies and games, and I know they are often used in ways many people don't pick up on. If I'm right, everyone remember there was no music in tonight's episodes' scenes with those two Romeo/Juliet lovers.
I really do hope that SciFi keeps their "promise" now that BSG has been renewed to get working on that standalone movie they announced in January. It'd be an awesome way to introduce new viewers to the show without seeing it from the start or watching "The Story So Far" which left quite a lot out to begin with.
I can't wait for next week!

Grace Parker said that she heard the DVD movie was a no go, but that she isn't really up to date with things.
And Tigh went back to drinking because of what Six said about him killing his wife.
I wish this episode was a 3 parter (or 8 parrter considering some of the crap we got this season). i read the spoilers and I can say that this season finale will be the best yet. The first season was nicely done and shocking, the second season was kind of lame, out of charater and completely done for shock value. Next week shit hits the fan and we only have to wait 9 months to see where we go from here! :)

Loved the episode and enjoy the commentary. Keith -- where do you get your current fleet population figures? If there were only 38,xxx when they left New Caprica, how are they up to 41,399 today? They can't possibly have had that many children in that timespan.

did everyone to include the admiral and the president come down with a case amnesia/stupid?
correct me if i'm wrong but the fact is if roslin had won the election they never would have settled on new caprica. hell they might even be on earth by now had they avoided that little "detour".
why didn't anybody jump on this when lampkin opened with his little speech?

Yes, but Roslin did not win the election. She tried to RIG the elecion, but the PEOPLE chose Baltar as president.

Jane, maybe the people on New Caprica, plus the people still occupying the ships in orbit. That's the only explanation I can come up with for the population figures.

I'm wondering about the numbers brought up during the trial, too. They definitely don't match with the opening credits.
And isn't this post's "current fleet population" off by 1? I thought Baltar's original lawyer died last episode from the explosion. That would make it 41,398.

Haven't read any of the spoilers, but in my opinion, it seemed like the music was somehow driving people in the bar crazy. First Tigh, then the president's secretary. Also, anyone else find it odd that everyone pretty much just shrugged off the news that there was a cylon/human hybrid and that it was on galactica? IIRC, only a select few know about it and most of those sitting in the courtroom didn't. Perhaps I missed them revealing it to the fleet or something though.

The lower number population figure that the lawyer used in the trial was clear to me she was reffering to the population of New Caprica minus all the crews of all the ships that stayed in orbit.
I've read the spoilers and I can't wait to see how this all pans out.

Where did everyone get the nice suits? Weren't most of the people refugees in the fleet. Especially Apollo? He was on patrol when the original attack happened. I can understand why they would have extra military uniforms but not extra suits. It would have more realistic to see the consume looking more "refugee-ish". There aren't any cloth manufacturers in the fleet.
Nice carry over with the lawyer still recuperating from the assassination attempt

The music is the most important part of the next episode, well I think so anyways.
And it was very clear people that the 38,--- number was the people who settled that got away. So there were still 3,000ish people left on the ships.

Christopher, I think it is pretty well known that everyone in the fleet knows about Sharon (think back to the hostage situation that got Billy killed) so knowing that she has a kid is an easy assumption.

In reality, there have been several "comeback characters" (such as Marion Barry, the former DC mayor who became mayor again after getting busted for possession of crack cocaine). But I find it hard to believe on BSG that anyone is buying Baltar as a savior. After all, it is KNOWN that he provided Six with the Caprican defense codes. It is known that he collaborated with the Cylons. It is known that he signed the death list. Why haven't they gotten Felix Gaeta to testify yet? He was there with Baltar during most of the New Caprica mishap.
Also, the "music" will definitely factor in somehow. So far, only Tigh, Anders, and the president's secretary have heard it. In the preview for next week, there is a clip of Anders speculating that some group of people (perhaps them) are Cylons. Somehow, I suspect that they are not any of the fabled Five. It's obvious that one of the Five is someone who has been seen before, but none of those people mentioned would instill in the Deanna Biers Cylon the kind of fear that she experienced when she met the Five before she was "shelved." I also do not think that Starbuck is a Cylon (although I hope they don't pull with her what they did with Starbuck in the original series with him being the father of the messianic "Star Child.")
I also suspect that there is some greater force at work here beyond the humans or Cylons (such as in "maelstrom" with the Leoben who wasn't really Leoben.) Perhaps the Lords of Kobol? I just don't understand how you can tie these godlike beings into the final five Cylons. After all, the Cylons were created by the humans as metallic robots. I suppose it will eventually tie into the evolution of the Cylons to human form. Perhaps the Cylons had a "second maker."

Did anyone else notice that Katee Sackoff's name was removed from the opening credits?
And per the trial...they never would of been on New Caprica if Rosalyn were president so that point is moot. I agree...why didn't anyone bring that fact up?

really liked the episode but I have one thing to say:
One of the best things of the US is it's lawsystem and I really start to hate to see it getting bashed all over tv all the time, even in good series now like bsg.
