Game shows are really stupid nowadays

Howie MandelThat's not me saying that, it's The Los Angeles Times. But I have to agree.

As several of us here have pointed out in the past, just look at the shows that pass for game shows nowadays. Deal Or No Deal has the gimmick of hot chicks and shiny suitcases. So far, so good (every show needs something). But then we get the most annoying guests in the history of television. Seriously, these people are so OUTGOING and have big PERSONALITIES, all of them, that the producers must give them a test before the show and won't pick anyone normal. Even their family members are this way. This was never the case on game shows before, and if you got an episode where it was like that, it stood out.

Now all of these contestants are the same, and so are the shows. After all, what is Identity but Deal Or No Deal, only with humans instead of suitcases? More annoying guests, more luck, and more stupid decisions (honestly, quit while you're ahead). And the l.......o......n.....g, drawn out pauses and "suspense" each show tries to build. Ugh.

1 vs. 100 is slightly better, but only because the mob of 100 (Ken Jennings, strippers, actors, etc) adds a little fun. But too many are dumb as doorknobs. Actual question (the first question) from last week: "If you saw Vanna White at a white sale, what would she be buying?"

a. linens
b. a used car
c. a vowel.

36 people got it wrong. 36! I don't see how these people even made it to the studio on their own. Seriously, after they walked off stage they should have been knocked out and sent back to school.

And the promos. My God, the promos. They actually give away what is going to happen in the show! They might not give away whether or not someone wins, say, the million dollars at the end of Deal Or No Deal, but they tell you who the contestant is and show several key moments from their game and how far they've gotten. I mean, I know movie trailers for comedies give away all the best jokes, but is NBC so desperate for viewers that they show what's going to happen on a game show?

Show Me The Money, thankfully, didn't last too long.

Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? seems to really love that adults can be dumb. But as the article says, the kids aren't all geniuses, they're given workbooks to study before the show. Maybe it should be called Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader We Helped Find The Answers To The Following Questions?

Somewhere, Bill Cullen is turning in his grave.
