The axe has fallen. Well, sort of. The network still has to confirm it but many solid sources have told E! Online's Kristin Veitch that Veronica Mars would not be coming back for a fourth season. The CW show has been struggling in ratings since its premiere on UPN. However, a good fan base helped get the show renewed up to a third season even though it moved around the schedule a bit. Many fans and TV critics were optimistic that the Gilmore Girls/Veronica Mars pairing would work well for both shows and bring in enough ratings. However, it seems it wasn't enough to secure a fourth season for this gem of a show featuring Kristen Bell.
Kristin Veitch also reports that show creator Rob Thomas revealed earlier this week that things were not looking good for the show. He told E! gossip queen: "I've never been less certain of our fate. I'm afraid I've gone from cautiously optimistic to something less than that."
It is unknown what the cast will do beyond next year. However, regular Chris Lowell, who's been playing Piz, will be part of the Grey's Anatomy potential spin-off episodes to air on ABC in May.
Veronica Mars' five remaining episodes will air without reruns starting on May 1.
This is just in...
Some sources, including a confirmed CW source who posts at Television Without Pity and Kristin's updated post, reveal that the show may be back but with a major overhaul. Word is that the show, if it returns for a fourth season, could be set at least four years in the future and focus on Veronica Mars, the FBI agent! TV Guide reports that the plan would be to have Veronica at the FBI academy. In any case, there would be a time jump, Veronica would be with the FBI in some capacity and ... most of the current regulars would not return for this new season.

I think there's a good chance Veronica Mars will be canceled, but still, Kristin is about as reliable as my hairdresser when it comes to this kind of news. I'll hold out a little hope until there is reliable confirmation, but I won't be holding my breath.

Why the hell would The CW cancel a great show like this when the rest of their lineup is pure shit? So much for becoming a major network. They're still operating like a shitty little netlet that has no clue what good programming is.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I truly hope some kind of "7th Heaven" miracle will happen (remember WB cancelled "7th Heaven" last year and even aired a series finale and CW renewed it) for VM :( It's one of my favorite shows.

The article link still works on this page, but the article has been removed from Kristin's main page, so you have to have the old link to access it.

Kat: Indeed it seems E! removed her article from the main page but it is still accessible by the link I provided. I took a screen cap of Kristin's article. It wouldn't surprise me that the network asked for a removal for a few hours. Ausiello had to do the same thing last week when he announced that Chris Lowell was cast in the GA spin off. He posted it, then an hour later it was gone, only to be put up again a few hours later.

Ah, crap. I was suddenly optimistic after the TVsquad article a few days ago that linked to the Variety piece that mentioned the CW not having many pilots in the works, and hoped the show would get renewed just because they needed something to fill out the schedule.
Hard to blame the CW, though. 3 seasons is pretty good for a show that hardly anyone watched. The blame clearly falls on the American public for having poor taste.

I said it was canceled after the show isn't supposed to come back until May.
Once again people gameshows and "reality" shows are cheaper to make thus they stay on the air? How hard is it for people to get that?
And what other shows does the network have? Honestly? 7th Heaven for an 12th year? Shitmore Girls for an 8th? One Bad Soap Hill?

I remember reading a quote from Thomas saying that they were shooting a season finale, not a series finale. I really hope they reshoot it if it is cancelled. I will be pissed if they end the series on a cliff hanger.
I adore the show and I think it'd be a huge mistake for the CW to drop it. Their lineup is seriously lacking already...and every pilot they've come out with has been pretty pathetic, except for Supernatural last year on the WB. (I actually liked Related, too.)
Anyway, they're going to have a ultra crappy season next year. They cancel VM, Gilmore Girls won't be renewed probably...I have serious doubts that One Tree Hill will be renewed (since VM isn't, and it's a FAR better show)...I've heard it's unlikely that Supernatural will be renewed (which SUCKS...that's one of the best shows on television)...basically, The CW will be left with Smallville (and I don't see that going on for more than one more season), Wrestling, and some mediocre sitcoms. Oh...and the Pussycats thing, which stunk. And whatever crappy pilots they can churn out between now and next fall.
Stupid, stupid move on their part.

Judging by the comments so far, I must be in the minority. But guys, VM just ain't what it used to be. With only a couple of exceptions (most notably Spit & Eggs), this season has been lackluster. I miss the supporting characters, the new ones aren't that interesting, and LoVe is becoming tedious.
I guess this is my roundabout way of saying that if the show ends in May, I don't think it will be a bad thing. I'd rather it have two stellar seasons than disintegrate into CW trash.

If the network wants to cancel it, now would be the time -- it would still give them enough time to wrap up the series. If they wait much longer, it could be another one of those series without closure.

As i felt with Arrested Development, 3 years is a good run. I love VM but feel all this will it last or won't it crap is draining. Let it die gracefully and we can walk away. The show had run its course anyway - college is not a good venue for a show like this.
RIP VM - I loved you so much I watched all of Season 1 in 5 days.
