(S02E15) I just want to thank FOX and the producers of American Idol for interrupting their 80 hours of programming to slip in a new episode of Bones. I know that it's hard to do this when the ratings and advertising revenues are just skyrocketing, so I appreciate it. Perhaps, in the near future, you'll consider putting shows like House and Bones on starting in the summer so their season's end by Christmas. That way you'll have the 2nd half of the season to air nothing but 24 and Idol.
And yes, I am angry at FOX's idiotic programming schedule.
Enough of this! Let's plow ahead with a review of this week's episode.
Well, at least I wasn't hungry when this episode ended. The first victim, who was eaten by crabs, wasn't too bad, and the third victim, Brennan's publicist, who was chewed on by fire ants, was a bit discomforting. But the second victim, the girl who was being devoured by rats . . . that was downright disgusting. It was definitely a 'close your eyes' moment for me. But, as I've said previously (or at least thought I did) gore is part of the show. And, not only do they do it extremely well, but they incorporate it into the episode without seeming out of place.
This week's mystery worked for me. Three murders take place, each of them mimicking scenes in Temperance's new book. At first I thought that it was done by one person, just like Booth and the rest of the squints of the Jeffersonian Institution did. And, I thought that one person was Hank, the assistant to Bones' publicist. But, when it was revealed that the three suspects were connected (Hank killed victim 2, suspect 1 killed the publicist, suspect 2 killed the first victim) it all came together. The first suspect had an alibi saying he was at a campground. The third victim was killed by fire ants. Excellent!
Over to Bones' relationship with Sully. Can someone out there please tell me why, when two people have sex on a television show, they are shown under the sheets? It gets hot and stuffy under those covers, folks. This is where we first found our two lovebirds. However, as the episode continued it seemed that Brennan was distancing herself from Sully, moving away from the protection he was offering. She declared their relationship was a fling, but she and Sully knew better. In the end they made up and seemed to be taking the next step in their relationship (as seen in the previews for next week's show).
A few other items of note:
-- Gosh, Jack had some fine lines this week. One was 'Do you know how tight a rat's rectum can be?'. Another was said during a conversation between him and Cam. When Cam says she probably won't read Bones' new book she reveals that she enjoys books that feature strong women who meet sensitive artists and have mad, animal sex with them. To that, Hodgins responded 'So, pretty much sex books?'. By the way, does that make Cam a perfect viewer for Lifetime?
-- The heroine of Brennan's new book is named Kathy Reichs, who happens to be the forensic anthropologist that Temperance Brennan is based on. Oh, I took a look on Amazon and Red Tape White Bones is not a real book from what I can see.
-- This is the first time I watched Bones in HD with full stereo (got me a new 37" flat screen). First, I never realized how many pops, beeps, and bings this show has. It is part of the shows uniqueness, I guess. The second thing I noticed, especially with HD, is that Booth and Sully really need to get a better razor.
Look at this, two new episodes in a row. How lucky for us! Unless FOX prempts next week's Bones with a very special American Idol recap I'll see you then.

Amen. I am so tired of "reality tv" and game shows. I will watch almost anything that is drama and appreciate it. When will the stations wise up that they need to mix up their programming so that everyone can have something to watch.

Boy howdy do I ever agree with your assessment of Fox's changes. Stop interrupting Bones!
And there's only one thing that is wrong in your review. Oliver is the stalker who fainted at the sight of blood. The assistant was Hank.
As for Kathy Reichs... she's supposed to do a cameo eventually if I read the blog on the Bones site right.

I also didn't see the Strangers on a Train thing coming. I just sort of assumed it was Hank the assistant (when in doubt, suspect the actor you've seen before... in this case, Andy Richter Controls the Universe's Byron, aka Jonathan Slavin). And that whole rat scene cracked me up. Zack was just so excited about his rat-killing technique... a great geek moment.

Right on about Fox's "All AI all the time".
And I loved the lines, the mystery and the lame blandness of Sully amused me this time around - just making the other characters more alive by comparison.
Kathy Reich already made her cameo appearance in the episode where Zach had his graduation. She was the one asking for his haircut (grrrr!)

I hate how Fox brought back House for like a week a month, at least Bones just wasn't shown at all.
I think Fox needs to have a fall season and a spring season. Show 10-12 episodes. Then in the spring show like two new hours in a row before AI starts then do what Fox is now and have 9 House episodes in a row.
I love this show and it has come in the toip 20 a few times and it would get in more if people knew when it was on.

Maybe Fox should just move AI to the Summer season. If it's the juggernaut that they seem to think it is, the viewers will just flock to it like mice to cheese. I hate Fox for doling out small doses of their good shows (House, Bones) during this time of the year whilst we drown in buckets of AI, which I've never watched.

It's all strategy to get viewers for new shows... they put American Idol on and have a new show after it. So many people watch AI, that they get a lot of exposure for whatever comes on next. I think this helped make House the hit that it is, and has contributed a lot to Bones' reasonable success.
Essentially, Fox is relying on the show to create hits for them, something they can't do as reliably in the summer. It's annoying scheduling-wise to people who already enjoy their shows, but if it helps get renewals for good stuff like Bones, I can deal with it.

while I appreciate Bill's attempt to explain Fox's AI strategy, I really have to wonder if Bones' and House's audience really has any interest in AI?!!! I know I don't. I think the season finale should be "The Body in the AI Final 12," with one of the judges being the killer.
Anyway, so glad to see Booth, Brennan and all the wacky squints again. And I loved the fact that Cam gave all the rats laxatives (the rats were cute - really Angela? ewww). And don't forget people that before there was the show, there were the books. They should be assigned summer reading for all Bones' fans!

I was a little disappointed that the sycophantic assistant was part of the murder trio since he was telegraphed from the very beginning as a "not right" person.
That being said, at least on CSI when they did the Strangers on a Train rip-off they gave it credit (even had the two culprits form the plan after meeting at an art house screening of the film, if I recall) I liked this episode but was cheesed off that they didn't even reference what they were so obviously aping.
