(S06E21) There's no big surprise tonight. As predicted by AOL's latest poll, it was time for Brandon's journey to end. You know, when it goes the way you expect it to go, it's kind of anti-climatic. How anti-climatic was it? Even Brandon said he "expected" to be going home.Did America get it right this week? Oddly, the judges didn't say. In fact, they didn't say much tonight. Like I said, we all expected Brandon to go. But still, didn't you expect Paula to weep, and offer him final words of inspiration?
The bad news: Sanjaya is safe once again.
The good news: Sanjaya was in the bottom two. He's not quite as popular as many of us thought. And hopefully next week, his luck will run out.
The best news: The show was only 30 minutes long, and breezed by quickly. In fact, it was so quick (and apparently running over schedule) that we didn't even get to hear Brandon's final performance. What's the deal Ryan? How did you let that happen? I for one would have voted to hear Brandon sing one more time, especially if it meant missing two minutes of Til Death.
You know what I find odd about this point in the competition? After ruthlessly booting FOUR contestants a week for three weeks, it's weird to suddenly pull back and only eliminate ONE person this week. I don't know about you, but I was more than ready to see at least two guys go home tonight (I'm talking to you Sanjaya).
Besides giving the results, the show squeezed in the typical cheesy group performance, the Idol Challenge question, Diana Ross, and the Ford commercial. It was a lot of stuff to cram into 30 minutes. And it felt a little manic to me. Here are some of the highlights:
Diana Ross sings "More Today Than Yesterday." She makes a grand old Diva entrance, wearing what I'm assuming is a 1980s Bob Mackie red gown (I swear my daughter's Barbie had the same dress). At 62, Diana has a pretty good body. Unfortunately, she was a bit wobbly at the end of her dramatic pose, and her wild, uncombed hair gives off sort of a crazy woman vibe. After she performed, I expected the judges to critique her performance. Because, "it wasn't her best vocals . . . but she sold it to the audience . . . and she's looked beautiful . . . and showed a star quality."- The group performs a tribute to Diana Ross. The boys sing, "Where Did Our Love Go?" The girls do "Baby Love." And they all sing "Stop! In the Name of Love" as one big happy group. Honestly, I think they could have used more rehearsal time. It was a bit messy. I'd prefer they skip the group songs completely and let the contestants focus on the competition. Maybe then, they wouldn't forget their words.
- The contestants sing "Float On" during the Ford music video which is just another commercial. My finger is trained to fast forward through commercials. And I am not tricked into believing that this is anything but a commercial.
- I was surprised that Phil Stacey was in the bottom three. I don't like him, but his voice sounded better than most of the other guys last night.
- The Idol Challenge question (Which Idol did Cowell predict would sell more albums than any other) was so easy that my seven-year-old son knew the answer. If they're going to call it a "challenge," shouldn't the question be challenging?
- Ryan tells us you can download last night's performances by going to the American Idol website. Of course, he doesn't tell us there's a cost involved, but there is, because this is American Idol.

Sanjaya can not sing and it is ashamed to keep him there week after week when he clearly lacks talent

> Diana Ross is a true legend. That said, her performance tonight was far less than legendary. Couldn't have sung one of her own bazillion #1 hits? Still love ya, Di.
> Sanjaya ... so close! Hopefully, next week we can remove this distraction.
> Over the past few weeks, several postings have criticized the "R&B" voices (Melinda, LaKisha) as being same-ol'-same-ol'. It was interesting listening to the medley and hearing how distinct their voices are compared to the others, particularly LaKisha. If that's same-ol', please keep it coming!

I just think it's a shame. Obviously someone has been messing with the phone lines. Yes, Brandon forgot some words, but he wasn't the only one. He still can sing whereas Sanjaya has clearly been the weakest link in this current group. And because of the phone mess-up others have been eliminated.
It's sad.

Liz-great low down as usual. I was not surprised to see Brandon Rogers get booted off. I was actually flummoxed at his poor showing last night because it should have been much better especially since it was the opening act.
I expected earnest Phil and Stephanie, who I like voted out. I'm glad they're still in.
As for Sanjaya--all the hardcore Fanjayas keep voting the dude because he keeps coming back week after week.

Each week the Sinjumbalayaa charade continues solidifies the need to change the voting format. Every time someone else gets voted off the show before that pathetic mop it undermines the the legitimancy of the show. ANYBODY voting for Sinjumbalaya should go get a hearing test.

I think one of the reasons Sanjaya keeps on keeping on is because A. Little thirteen year old girls love using the phone, B. There is a huge India community, and, C. Voters are defensive of his sweet self against that mean old Simon and intend to show it. I think Simon caught on to that and was deliberately a little kinder in the last challenge.

This amuses me so much.
Dave, who runs VTW, is a graduate of the high school that Gina's boyfriend works at (where I also work).
I wonder how this will go over later in the competition.

I think it is unfair to single out Sanjaya. Just because he has no stage presence and you can barely hear him, he actually can carry a tune. The fact is though, all the men sucked last night.
BTW: had anybody noticed that Phil looked like the undead last night? From now on, I shall refer to him as Phil "Nosferatu" Stacey

rw, Yes all the guys were very bad last night, but Sanjaya has ALWAYS been bad. i don't understand how anyone can defend them! he can't sing, he never showed he can sing, she should be there. "But he has a tune", I don't give a fuck, so did THOUSANDS of others that have applied to AI throughout the years. Were they allowed to be in the top 24? No. Top 12? No. he can't sing and bring the whole show down.

Are you watching the same show as the rest of us? Phil has always looked undead and Sanjaya could never sing. Phil looks like he is on cancer treatments or something. Now don't ass will come and say I'm making fun of cancer people. You know who you are.

is the vote based on talent or personality?

It's nothing more than a popularity contest - talent notwithstanding. Mama's boy Sinjoke just has a bigger group of suckers campaigning for him who fall for that lame act like a 6th grade student election. It's like having to watch the boss's kid hack his way through a piano recital at the company picnic and see the smoozers line up and kiss his rear afterwards. I think Simon was wrong to say he was brave. Brave are the people he bumped out that kept from lashing out at travesty of it in front of a million witnesses. If Sinjoke were truly brave he would give us all a break and just leave already.

> "The good news: Sanjaya was in the bottom two."
This certainly was implied, but it is not necessarily a fact. Brandon, Phil and Sanjaya were in the bottom three. Just because Phil was declared "safe" doesn't mean he was the third lowest vote-getter. Unless I missed something, it's possible that Phil was the second lowest and that Sanjaya was the third lowest.

But Phil looked particularly Nosferatu-ish last night. The teeth, the WHITE skin, the pointy ears. The creepy look.
As for Sanjay - not a fan, just pointing out that he was no worse then any of the other guys last night. As for moving on, it was the judges who advanced him for 4 rounds and LOVED him. Now they hate him but they no longer control his fate. Anyway, Brandon has been just as underwhelming every week as Sanjay, so it's a toss up as far as I am concerned.

Sorry to see Brandon leave so early, and even sorrier to see Sanjaya stick around. It's true that he can sing in tune, but he can't project his voice above a whisper, and he gives off a weird vibe. So does Phil, whose voice is OK but inconsistent. Those two aren't watchable, and I'm tired of both Chris's. Chris R is a second-rate singer and Chris S let his sense of humour get trampled by the pressure to kiss up. Blake's hip but not a great singer. Brandon was the best singer among the guys, but his nonchalance didn't help him.
As for the girls, Gina's OK but not great. I hope she's the first of the ladies to go. Haley's very sexy and it would be wise for her to keep showing off her looks. She's got to work on her post-performance banter, though. I can't really see her selling too many records, but for the moment she's nice eye candy. Stephanie's a good singer and very gracious under fire, but she's not memorable enough to stick around to the end. Melinda and Lakisha are the best singers, but the person with the most music industry potential in this competition is probably Jordin. She's young, bubbly, attractive, talented, and poised. She needs some training to master her craft, and maybe lose a few pounds and mature a bit, but she's got the right stuff.

Don't forget ..there is a website out there entitled vote for the worst idol contestant.. that aims to subvert the whole voting process. The worse someone does the more votes he/she gets. It's really sad. That's what is keeping Sanjaya in the show in my opinion.

My Daughter said the only thing good about Sanjaya is his hair. I guess teenagers love his hair! That's what keeps him there week after week, when he clearly should've been eliminated the first week.
