American Idol: Live Results Show #4

Brandon and Sanjaya(S06E21) There's no big surprise tonight. As predicted by AOL's latest poll, it was time for Brandon's journey to end. You know, when it goes the way you expect it to go, it's kind of anti-climatic. How anti-climatic was it? Even Brandon said he "expected" to be going home.

Did America get it right this week? Oddly, the judges didn't say. In fact, they didn't say much tonight. Like I said, we all expected Brandon to go. But still, didn't you expect Paula to weep, and offer him final words of inspiration?

The bad news: Sanjaya is safe once again.
The good news: Sanjaya was in the bottom two. He's not quite as popular as many of us thought. And hopefully next week, his luck will run out.
The best news: The show was only 30 minutes long, and breezed by quickly. In fact, it was so quick (and apparently running over schedule) that we didn't even get to hear Brandon's final performance. What's the deal Ryan? How did you let that happen? I for one would have voted to hear Brandon sing one more time, especially if it meant missing two minutes of Til Death.

You know what I find odd about this point in the competition? After ruthlessly booting FOUR contestants a week for three weeks, it's weird to suddenly pull back and only eliminate ONE person this week. I don't know about you, but I was more than ready to see at least two guys go home tonight (I'm talking to you Sanjaya).

Besides giving the results, the show squeezed in the typical cheesy group performance, the Idol Challenge question, Diana Ross, and the Ford commercial. It was a lot of stuff to cram into 30 minutes. And it felt a little manic to me. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Diana Ross Diana Ross sings "More Today Than Yesterday." She makes a grand old Diva entrance, wearing what I'm assuming is a 1980s Bob Mackie red gown (I swear my daughter's Barbie had the same dress). At 62, Diana has a pretty good body. Unfortunately, she was a bit wobbly at the end of her dramatic pose, and her wild, uncombed hair gives off sort of a crazy woman vibe. After she performed, I expected the judges to critique her performance. Because, "it wasn't her best vocals . . . but she sold it to the audience . . . and she's looked beautiful . . . and showed a star quality."
  • The group performs a tribute to Diana Ross. The boys sing, "Where Did Our Love Go?" The girls do "Baby Love." And they all sing "Stop! In the Name of Love" as one big happy group. Honestly, I think they could have used more rehearsal time. It was a bit messy. I'd prefer they skip the group songs completely and let the contestants focus on the competition. Maybe then, they wouldn't forget their words.
  • The contestants sing "Float On" during the Ford music video which is just another commercial. My finger is trained to fast forward through commercials. And I am not tricked into believing that this is anything but a commercial.
  • I was surprised that Phil Stacey was in the bottom three. I don't like him, but his voice sounded better than most of the other guys last night.
  • The Idol Challenge question (Which Idol did Cowell predict would sell more albums than any other) was so easy that my seven-year-old son knew the answer. If they're going to call it a "challenge," shouldn't the question be challenging?
  • Ryan tells us you can download last night's performances by going to the American Idol website. Of course, he doesn't tell us there's a cost involved, but there is, because this is American Idol.
Next Week: On Tuesday, it's another 2-hour show, with the remaining 11 performing. Wednesday night, another one bites the dust.
