For those are you who worry a lot and get all nervous, you might want to skip this story.
Variety has a list of the TV shows that are "on the bubble," the ones that are teetering on the edge of cancellation and might not make it to fall '07. The list includes a few shows that I thought were actually doing well, and that scares me a bit (and ticks me off).
ABC: The Nine and Knights of Prosperity are probably gone, and What About Brian is on the edge too, despite getting a second life a few months ago.
CBS: Believe it or not, Jericho might not return this fall. The Class might not return if new episodes of Old Christine do well, and that's because Rules of Engagement is doing so well that it could be the surprise hit of the midseason and return in the fall.
FOX: The War at Home and The Winner could be going bye-bye. As for Standoff, it's moving to Fridays later this month so we'll see how the number are then (but wasn't it getting OK numbers in the old time slot?)
NBC: Nobody expects Studio 60 to make it to a second year, while 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights aren't getting great ratings but both will probably see a second year (I wish they'd extend that kindness to Studio 60). Other shows on the bubble: Medium, Crossing Jordan, and Law and Order: CI.
The networks announce their fall schedules in May, though we'll probably hear some news before then.

I have a feeling Rules of Engagement is doing so well because of Patrick Warburton. whisper: I watch it because of him.

I can't belive Jericho might not get a second season. But with all the breaks they take in the season now I don't see how any show makes it.

"Law and Order" is one of mine and I like "Medium" too. Why do they keep those dull and boring shows like "Lost'and "Survival" and " A.Idol"?

The article said it's too soon to tell about The Winner.
So Bob, your sentence is sort of misleading.

I thought Jericho was doing ok ratings-wise. I swear, anytime I try and watch a show consistently, they throw it away.
I'd like to see the kindness of a 2nd given to S60 too, but I doubt it'll happen. Maybe if production costs weren't so high...

I made my peace about The Nine's cancellation and I don't expect Studio 60 to come back. *snif*
But I'm glad FNL has a shot at another season. Unless they let Kitsch go and drop the Tim/Lyla story.
Yup, I'm all about the shallow and I'm shameless about it.

I thought Jericho already got a second season order?
And 30 Rock might stay because they need a sitcom, FNL might stay for... Buzz....? Studio 60 no longer has either, so good bye and goodnight.
I wonder what show Bob will completely freak out about next year.

I bet the reason that Rules of Engagement is so successful is because it pokes fun at relationships. Since most of America has dysfunctional marriages (50% divorce rate) and countless other affairs, its a silent way to release. It appeals to the lowest common denominator. Much like all escapism TV.
IMHO

No big surprises but its interesting how quickly Jericho has fallen from grace. One minute you're the hot new show and the next, you could be headed for cancellation. I guess those mid-season breaks aren't working so well.
The real interesting point is that Six Degrees may actually get a second season. Who would have guessed?

Jericho - c'mon, easily one of the best new shows on TV, and one I'm hooked on. It's engaging, real (for the most part) and the story feels like it could all happen tomorrow.
30 Rock - again, one of the best new shows, and yet also 'on the bubble' Love Tina Fey, and Alec Baldwin, the writing is stellar, and Baldwin just won a freakin Golden Globe. This show is like The Office a few years back, quirky, weird, not really like too many other things on TV, somewhat tepid ratings, but The Office grew on people, and 30 Rock will too.
Studio 60 - Meh, I've found I don't really care one way or another about this show. I haven't missed it since its been off the air, and although I did like it for the most part when it was on, I think that in the end, the tag of being 'too smart' for mass consumption is what killed this show, because it was true.
And I might be in the minority here, but I loved The Knights of Prosperity. I thought it was hilarious and had a ridiculously original premise.
Sophie...Lost, boring...I'm sorry my dear, but you must be blind and deaf. Slow moving the story may be, but that show really does not slow down. That's like saying 24 is like taking Grandma for a stroll in the park.
Rules of Engagement...WTF, how did this happen? Oh, that's right, most people don't like to have to think, they like boring, cliched, laugh tracked shows, like this, War at Home, Two and Half Men, According to Jim, George Lopez, ugh, this list could go on and on...

What's the word on "How I Met Your Mother"? Last I heard, the cast was still waiting on confirmation of a 3rd-season greenlight...

WOW... The Class is so amazing. It is the one sitcom that my wife and I HAVE to watch. It has replaced "King of Queens" for us. So much fun, so many plots.. and we have to find out who ends up with who!!!!

Sounds about right.
CBS hasn't yet learned how to deal with something like Jericho... so they could well have that on the bubble wrong end.
NBC does know how to deal with such things... so 30 Rock and FNL are a much better bet to see a econd season.
Bottom line is - if CBS tried to air something like The Office on their "must see" Monday night lineup in 2005 - we'd have already forgotten about it, because they'd have canceled it after half a season.

It would be sad to see Studio 60 go, but as mentioned above, it's been off the air for several weeks and I haven't really missed it.
I would, however, like to see Aaron Sorkin back doing something again. Maybe it was just the show being a show about the BTS of a show that made it such an easy target.
Say what you will about Studio 60, I will miss what it brought to the conversation about what is going on in America that doesn't get said often enough.

First of all I think Jericho, just like Daybreak, had TWO good episodes, after that it went downhill. Especially because when in the days after a nuclear explosion and no word from the outside world, people in that little town behave as if they were in a petting zoo. They had a frickin BBQ goddammit. Additionally they had the cheapest set of all shows this year. Issaac's Penthouse terrace on "Heroes" looked more expensive than the streets of Jericho. That show just blows, period.
"The Class" had it's fun run, by god I knew the story it would take once they said they were going to a steakhouse as a thank you gift. And the marriage proposal? That's the perfect scene to END that whole show. Just face teh music and accept that the people on that show are not really interesting. "How I Met Your Mother" HAS interesting characters but is going nowhere since episode 6 in season 1. They are coming up with a fun story every episode and I like the show for that. It is horribly funny and I for one don't think it won't come back.
So for me, the shows that are obsolete are:
- The Winner (by GOD this is SO HORRIBLE)
- The Class (story is going nowhere)
- Studio 60 (same here. Boring characters)
- The Nine (no story there either, just the premise)
- Knights of Prosperity (not funny enough, although interesting characters)
- Crossing Jordan seems to have lost its backing with the studio and therefor will go
- Gilmore Girls is going to end
- Criminal Intent: I think the cast has run dry and splitting the stories between two teams seems to me also splits the audience. It simply is not that different from Law and Order and they should simply use the good ideas on one show and not spread them between these two shows. Funny enough I think the same about CSI: Miami. That show just blows (sorry) but seems to have found it's audience of people who can stand Horatio Cane tilting his head and speaking like a rubber band.
- What About Brian: is going nowhere. Up until the marriage (or lack of) they had a storyline, afterwards they just picked what came to their minds and went with it. Felt like the last two seasons of Dawson's Creek for about 10 episodes now. It simply has to go for I think people there are getting paid for just pulling stuff out of their rear ends all day and put that on the show. I have more interesting things developing in MY life than that. They just ran out of ideas.
Shows that will stay:
- Old Christine - for a long time, just mention it because I think it will replace "The Class" (Julia is too interesting and too funny on that show, to me it is pretty close to "Rude Awakening" and that show I really liked)
- Rules of Engagement (Although the little blonde guy is annoying ;-) )
- Lost (still has enough to pull me in front of the TV and the last two episodes made me believe again :-) )
- Friday Night Lights has a Football topic and basically needs to stay. Additionally it targets the very youg Teenager audience. As long as it does not fail to attract its demographic, it will stay. (I am not a teenager anymore so I cannot say whether they like it or not - I for one would watch it before going out)

Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock getting picked up would be great. I just assumed FNL would be gone, because it really hasn't built a following at all, and the quality was there from day one, while 30 Rock wasn't very good at first, but its ratings have ticked up as the quality has as well. The other thing on NBC that concerns me is the Criminal Intent thing. The original L&O has grown completely tired, and I think it's time to go, but CI has some life left, I think.
I'm surprised by Jericho, but it'd be for the best. The hiatus cost them a ton of ratings, and, to me, the quality has fallen off considerably. It was never a "great" show, but I think it forgot what it was about after the hiatus. The town dealing with the disaster was the meat of the show in the first half, in the second half it's relationship drama and conspiracies (six presidents? who cares).
That last note about the CW not having many pilots gives me a glimmer of hope for Veronica Mars though. But either way, I just hope whenever they get cancelled that they get some warning about it so they get to do a real finale.
And boy do I hate Variety-speak. Laffers and skeins and skedmates? Do they feel like they have to invent their own slang to seem cool?
