Wow. Here's a shocker for a Sunday afternoon: Comedian Richard Jeni has passed away from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was According to this AP report (via CNN), Jeni's girlfriend called police and told them "my boyfriend shot himself in the face." Jeni was found in a West Hollywood home barely alive, and he died in the hospital soon afterwards.
You've likely seen Jeni many times, as a guest on various talk shows (he appeared on The Tonight Show often, with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno), or on HBO specials like Platypus Man or last year's A Big Steaming Pile of Me. He first appeared nationally on a 1990 Showtime special entitled Richard Jeni: Boy From New York City.
Jeni had a very abrupt but funny style, which made sense, given his Brooklyn upbringing. He was a respected elder-statesman of the stand-up world, and still had fresh material and perspectives, even after a couple of decades in the comedy trenches. He'll definitely be missed.

Very funny commedian, I had the opportunity to see him perform and met him afterwards at a private party. He was a very nice person. As mentioned earlier, he was one of the great comics of today.

First time I saw Richard Jeni was at the Comedy Connection in Boston. Everyone at and around our table had the same complaint at the end of his set - that our faces all hurt from laughing so hard. Truly one of the funniest men I have ever heard.
My wife and I were shocked to see the wire story. Does anybody know if he had personal issues?

How very sad, I was just thinking about searching to find out where to see him again. One of the funniest comedians ever! Great timing and fabulous material. Saw him at the Comedy Store in Atlanta and our faces hurt from laughing so much!
He will be missed and missed some more.
Heaven is a funnier place today!
Condolences to his family and loved ones.

Dammit! He was one of my favorites. He had a way of putting things out there that even if they were the most unpolitically correct thing in the universe, you had to laugh. I've been going through some pretty tough times lately, and reading this really slams me.

the death of richard jeni is such sad news... one erroneously supposes that people who make us laugh are happy... he was a very talented man and his humor will be sorely missed...

If he commited suicide, no matter how funny he was, I will not miss him. Suicide is an escape for the weak and I will not mourn for the weak.
However, I'm thinking this looks awful fishy. You don't shoot yourself in the face to commit suicide. You shoot through the mouth or into the temple. I'm thinking there's something going on with the girlfriend.

So are people who get cancer and die weak too? Depression (a very common cause of suicide) is a clinical illness that requires treatment. It isn't a character flaw or a personal weakness.

This is so damned sad. What would make a great guy like that commit suicide? It makes no sense. It makes me sick.

Yeah, John. You're a genius. If he was weak, no one should mourn. Because you know all great comedy, tragedy, art, philosophy and invention comes from strengh and perfection. We should discard everything in life that comes from weakness or imperfection. Those Nazis, they had something.
P.S. In case you couldn't recognize it, this is sarcasm. Good-bye Richard, I wish I could have helped.

I could be wrong but I never saw him do Shatner, are you sure you aren't confusing him with Kevin Pollak?
Jeni was a very funny comedian and I hope he has found the peace he was searching for. My heart goes out to his family :(

Very sad... depression get's another one. To all those who say depression isn't real... take another look! Untreated depression often ends this way.

I think he was diagnosed with a terminal illness, which is why he committed suicide, not because he was "weak". I'm not sure the details of the illness, but it takes guts to give all your money to charity and end your life, instead of dying long and painful.
