Remember when NBC had a slogan for their repeats, "If you've never seen it, it's new to you!" I thought it was actually pretty much true, if a sneaky way to sell reruns.
Now they're going one step further. Next week the network is going to show two repeats of The Office. But instead of just airing them as they aired before, they're going to be recut into an hour-long episode, mixed up a little bit and with deleted scenes added to put in a whole new subplot that you didn't see in the first airings of the episodes. They're dubbing them "Newpeats."
Sorta sounds like a mix tape or using the shuffle feature on iTunes. My question is: will viewers like this? Will the directors of the episodes like it (assuming they're not part of the remix). Or will fans consider it cheating? Personally, I think it's a neat way to watch the episodes again. I mean, they're going to show the reruns anyway, so maybe this is a chance to show deleted scenes again and see what the episode looks if remixed.

I like this idea. Since there's no new episode until April, this beats the standard repeat. I will watch for sure.

I like the idea too. I'll be curious to see which version appears on the DVDs!

The Office is really exploring this, releasing Producer's Cut in iTunes and now the Newpeats. Probably the "The Return" episode will be the same as the iTunes one, as for "Traveling Salesmen" it can explore more the deleted scenes that were great.

Yay! I missed some of "The Office" this season because (a) my TiVo was committed to a previous engagement (and, er, I was too cheap to buy episodes on iTunes) or (b) my TiVo frakked up and didn't change to the right channel, thus denying me my "Office" fix. Now I get to play catchup and get new material.

I think it's a great idea, because unlike a lot of deleted scenes in movies and TV shows, there's a reason they were deleted. On the other hand The Office's deleted scenes could just be stuck right into the show, and not hurt the flow at all, and a lot of them are as funny or even funnier than what is going on. When the DVD's came out I was hoping for some kind of option to be able to play the episodes with the deleted scenes put back into them.
I applaud NBC for thinking outside of the box, and hopefully they carry this over to the season 3 DVD release.

@ Danny Cohen: Andy's not "departed" but in anger management. He was actually made a regular cast member for next year. Here's hoping they do the same for Karen. Go Team Karen! [Not in a Pam v. Karen way. I just love Rashida Jones.]

How will this affect the show when it's sold to other countries? In my country they show The Office on a local station, it's one season behind, but I watch the current season on cable. How will my local station handle this hour long Newpeat I wonder?

It sounds like a pretty good idea, I will definitely tune in and I tend to skip repeats.
And yeah, here's hoping they keep Rashida Jones on the show, no matter who hooks up with who. Team Karen forever.

So what was new last night? The only new parts of this newpeat I saw were the Pam art content bit and Andy going to "Management Training". Not much new...
