Imagine this: you're sitting on your leather sofa with a glass of Joseph Phelps 2001 Insignia wine in one hand and a remote control in the other. You look at your 80-inch plasma television. What's on the screen? Scrubs.A media group analyzed Nielsen ratings by income and determined that affluent American television viewers prefer to watch ABC and NBC. And they don't watch reality television. Instead, the highest-rated television shows among America's wealthier viewers are The Office, 30 Rock, What About Brian, Lost, Friday Night Lights, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, and Studio 60. Besides DH and Grey's, those are all shows that receive mediocre ratings.
And here's another interesting discovery. The researchers found that the median income for ABC viewers is $64,000; NBC is $60,000; CBS is $59,000; FOX is $53,000 and The CW is $45,000. I'm guessing that income level is also tied to age, with younger people watching FOX and The CW and older people settling for ABC and NBC.
What networks do you watch the most? I have to admit it's primarily NBC for me.
[Thanks, Justin!]

Lost doesn't get mediocre ratings, does it?
And I watch NBC and ABC the most, although I'm not anywhere near rich.

4 shows on FOX, 2 shows on ABC, and 2 shows on NBC. I'm 20, and needless to say my income is much, much less than those medians (I am a college student).

It's good to see '30 Rock' up there. I think that show is extremely funny and definitely deserves a 2nd season.
Are The Office's ratings really mediocre? It always gets a 4.0-4.5 rating among 18-49 year olds, which is pretty high I think (Grey's Anatomy is 6-6.5 I think)

This is no great surprise. Previous studies have shown that more highly educated people don't care for reality TV, and income and education are very closely correlated. H.Ed's care for smartly written scripted shows, and most of those shows qualify (with the exception of the increasingly insipid Grey's Anatomy).
Advertisers REALLY need to take note of this. I'm getting sick and tired of great scripted shows getting cancelled because high school drop-outs don't tune in. The all-reality-all-the-time trailer set doesn't spend NEARLY as much money on advertised products as do the folks in this demographic. Want us to tune in? Renew 30 Rock.

CBS: How I Met Your Mother
FOX: The Simpsons and King Of The Hill

married 1 kid 25 year old $100,000+ dual income
we only watch tv together and only on dvr
Sun: Desperate Housewives
Mon: The Class, 2 and 1/2 Men
Tues: American Idol
Wed: American Idol and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS - OUR FAVORITE SHOW!!!
Thurs: more idol, 30 Rock and Scrubs
and a lot of Food Network
we have an awful knack for choosing shows that get canceled- 2 years ago we LOVED Life As We Know It on ABC (cancelled mid season) and last year we got into Commander in Chief (also ABC, also canned mid-season) and we are afraid of losing FNL and The Class - both great shows that dont pull in "Idol"ic ratings but appeal to the demographics that advertisers love, like us!
oh well...

I thought when I logged on I would find everyone having a hot laugh over this article - instead, a lot of people are posting their incomes, along with what they watch.
So, rich people watch inferior crap like Friday Night Lights and What about Brian?
Yeah, right.
The rich, when they watch at all, watch cable.
