Dirt: The Sexxx Issue

Dirt(S01E10) I'm officially in a love/hate relationship with this show. I've realized that I'm just about 50/50 on every episode. There's plenty I like, but lately there's been an equal amount of material that just makes no sense whatsoever to me.

I think a lot of this stems from the way the stories have developed and changed so drastically from where they started. Take Willa for example. Initially, she was being portrayed as a young Lucy, obsessed with her job and furthering her career with the magazine. Now, when she first started sleeping with Brent, I thought she was using him for her purposes. Now it seems that she's his perfect match. Obsessed with sex (butt-plugs and threesomes, oh my!), she seems less interested in her job and more concerned with where she can screw Brent next. Her character is just in a very different place right now than I originally expected.

I think that's one of things that's bugged me a little about this. The progression of a character like Willa doesn't feel natural because her demeanor/attitude has changed so drastically and fast. It's not that I don't enjoy it, but it feels a little off to me.

Elsewhere, I think the highlight of this episode for me was the spoof on the Simpson family in the form of the fictitious Banheart gang. A Joe Simpson type father had been pimping out his two daughters (i.e. Ashlee and Jessica) to magazine editors and then blackmailing them for cover stories to jump start the girls' non-existent careers. That is one of the things I like about this show. They're not shy when it comes to putting spins on actual celebrities. Plus they do it so well, that you always know where the story is coming from.

So it was Willa and Brent that got involved with the Ashlee Simpson of the Banheart family. Trust me -- I'm not against threesomes, but it was surprising to see that Willa was in favor of them. More so than even Brent I think.

Elsewhere, things just sort of chugged along. Holt and Julia are going to try to start again, even though he can't keep his mind off of Lucy. Don had the most development (we found out his stepmother molested him), but I'll say it again. Deep character development just isn't essential to this show. Don is screwed up. How does knowing why contribute to anything?

The big revelation (not really a surprise though), was that Sammy isn't behind the surveillance on Lucy. You expected that though. So the question still remains: who has something against Lucy Spiller? With the way the show has been going, it wouldn't surprise me if it was family related. Maybe Leo is trying to give his big sister a taste of her own medicine?
