(S01E02) Murder, sex, and gratuitous violence - the things I love most about television - and this episode had them all.
That being said, does anyone else think it was a mistake not to stick this series on a Showtime or at the very least FX? If this were the case, maybe the producers wouldn't have to do things like air special web episodes of the show so that material deemed too "edgy" doesn't get stuck on the cutting room floor.
I also find it difficult to believe these Black Donnellys are capable of committing such atrocities against humanity all without dropping a single F or C-bomb. A show of this subject matter deserves a healthy dose of profanity, the occasional errant boob, and maybe even a shot of the actual fibula and tibia being shattered by a sledge hammer. Why are the producers denying me these pleasures?
Not to say that Haggis and Moresco haven't done a fairly decent job working with what they have at NBC, but I'm always going to feel that there's a level of intensity missing from the show that would really put it over the top. I'm also completely desensitized to graphic and violent material so I'm guessing my views aren't exactly parallel with the general TV viewing population.
So ignoring my worthless request for more brutality and salaciousness I found the episode pretty entertaining and even laughed a few times.
A Stone of the Heart was a reference to a line from W.B. Yeats who once said, "Too long a sacrifice can make a stone of the heart." It seems the wealth of sacrifices Tommy has made for his jackass brother, Jimmy, have finally taken a toll on him, and he's grown tired of cleaning up Jimmy's messes.
Which reminds me, Tommy, Kevin, and Sean could probably pass for brothers in real life being that they have similar body types. What happened to Jimmy? He's stumpy, un-athletic looking, and pretty much different in appearance from his brothers.
Casting miscue? Probably not since Thomas Guiry plays the part pretty convincingly, particularly while beating in the guys head with the pay phone. I just always find myself wondering if Jimmy has the same daddy as the rest of the boys.
Now, I know from watching Dateline and people I've killed personally, that you can't commit crimes and/or murder and not leave some telltale signs behind. The Donnellys have collectively stolen a delivery truck, kidnapped someone, killed six or seven people, and disposed of a body in a gruesome manner - all over the course of about two days.
I really get the feeling they're doing this stuff way too easily, particularly Tommy. He's supposed to be the "good child" who was only recently on the road to becoming a better human being. One second he's in art school pursuing a degree. The next he's sledge hammering a cadaver into a barrel. He's had such a metamorphosis in such a short period of time that it's nearly unbelievable, but it can also be blamed on the fierce loyalty he has for his brothers which is a nice out for the writers.
Almost forgot, my wish to see an errant boob was actually granted this episode. Much to my chagrin (and much to my wife's delight) the boobs belonged to Tommy Donnelly. That'll teach me.
This week, I'm a bit more intrigued by the show than I was the previous week. The relationship between Tommy and Jenny could become a nice diversion from the usual chaos of the show. Joey "Ice Creams" light banter with the interrogators could also bring the show some much needed levity. I can't say I was a fan of him magically writing himself into the anecdotes as it didn't really seem to fit into the darkness of this specific episode. However, I can appreciate the attempt to lighten things up a bit.
Finally, here's a tip for any would be shoplifters. Apparently, foil or aluminum mesh does hinder the abilities of inventory tracking devices in retail stores. My predictions on things that will happen since this episode aired:
1. Tin foil prices will soar on increased demand.
2. Episodes of attempted and successful shoplifting will raise tenfold.
3. It becomes the new fad to walk around with blue ink splotches decorating your clothing.
Actually, none of these things will happen since roughly 15 people including myself are watching this show. With my luck, it will probably get cancelled just as I really start liking it. Here's to hoping that doesn't turn out to be the case.

You can count me among one of the 15 watching this show. I was worried that the second episode would be slow and all about the relationship between Tommy and Jenny. Much to my suprise and delight it wasn't.
I have to agree with your wife. THANK YOU TOMMY FOR TAKING YOUR CLOTHES OFF!! Too bad it was to take care of a dead guy, but the view was great!
Also, I can't believe you didn't mention who plays the boys' mommy. None other than Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew).
I was a little bit worried I wouldn't be able to get pass her Star Trek character, but when she hid the blood on Kevin, I knew she wasn't going to be the Captain we came to love on Star Trek.

I think Jimmy is out of shape due to his bum leg. Sure, he can still walk and all, but I think he can't use that leg as much as the other one. My mum had an accident a few years back, her knee got shattered. She can walk and all but not for longer than half an hour before it acts up.

Wow, this episode was even better than the first one. Everything clicked, I finally was able to tell the brothers apart AND memorize newly introduced characters... I love Joey "Ice Cream" as the narrator because he doesn't fit at all in the dark environment. I'm also not bothered by the fact that he wouldn't be able to tell most of the stories because he wasn't there. For all I know he is just making stuff up and telling it like he imagines it could've happend and in reality he was a fly on the wall, sometimes being in the same room and not noticed. I also liked how the brothers reacted to him magically appearing next to them.
I like all the actors and actresses and I did not think that the violence has to be more graphic. I still have some imagination left and don't need to see body-parts separated, bones broken or brain splattered across a wall.
I agree though that TBD is out of place with NBC. I , and certainly many other viewers, would expect a show of this quality over at HBO/Showtime or FX. I wouldn't mind a little swearing also, but I don't see the need to drop the F-Bomb Sopranos-style... I believe they are raised differently and at least Tommy seems to be quite well spoken. I am also pretty sure that "Heroes" is a show that appeals to a different kind of demographic and TBD won't be able to hold even a third of the viewers. This will look bad and after six or seven episodes NBC will decide not to air it anymore. But I will enjoy it while it's on :)

The TBD should be on Showtime or HBO. Heroes is going into reruns for 6 weeks. As many other shows are. This could actually help TBD.

"Episodes of attempted and successful shoplifting will raise tenfold."
Friday Night Lights already aired his own (Tyra stealing some lipstick for Julie).
As for this show...it doesn't work for me. It's not excrutiatingly bad and worth ignoring, neither is it so bad it's fun to mock & trash it *cough*Lost*cough* but it just...barely stands there.
My biggest gripe is that the characters are not endearing beyond their blood link.
I need more than "they're from Irish descent" and "they're brothers" to make me care for them and therefore give me an incentive to keep watching them.
TBD have one more episode to convince me that these people are worth more of my time.

Count me in with the other 15 people! I actually never realized the lack of F-bombs or boobies until you mentioned it here, which I'm not against by any means, and am in agreement that this show could really soar on cable. However, I guess I'm one of the few who enjoyed Joey "Ice Cream" jumping in and out of the story. The latest webisode "God's a Comedian" has left me wanting more of the Donnellys.

Contrary to apparently everyone else, I don't think that Joey "Ice Creams" is writing himself into the stories as much as out of the stories, and that he was really more involved in the violence than he would like to admit. My "way out there" theory is that what he says that Tommy does is actually what he does, and he's just trying to get Tommy framed or something.

This show would be so much better if it were to have been made for Showtime. I'd say HBO, but then they already have The Sopranos.
As it is, I give it a one in three chance of survival on "network" TV.

this show couldn't be on hbo or showtime because they already have this show but better. fx would be good, it could go in with the shield, rescue me mix.
it was better than the episode before it but still meh. i could certainly have gone for some stray boob and f-bombs but better writing and interesting characters not based on the godfather would be the first order of business.

I thought it was great. I thought it was very suspensful. I like that they show criminals getting away with it. From CSI and Law and Order it seems as if all of the murderers get caught. It seems realistic in that the police don't really care about the murder of a criminal.
Unlike most people, I don't see Tommy as good. Likable yes but not good. What reasons do we have to believe he's good. Because he doesn't steal cars or goes to art school. They really didn't give you much to presume that Tommy is or was good. I think they are bad but like robin hood is bad.

I really enjoyed TBD although lots of people disliked it because of its plot. It is sad that people watch CSI instead of this, but I don't think it will be put off air. NBC has made a special episode for the "intense footage" (if it was Showtime, it'd be a lot easier) and I think that they have hope. I think more people will tune in because of the Heroes rerun and realize that this is actually better than CSI:Miami, unless NBC acts like Fox by cancelling TBD.

The thing I don't understand about not being to show show uncut as intended on cable when you putting for access on the internet.
It makes me angry!! You have things like the V-Chip and parental controls on everything you buy now a days it seems, but thats still not enough to show everything we like to see.
Me and the other 14 people who watch this are sick of it! Show me the dead guys legs getting crushed like he was playing whack-a-mole!!!

I find this show entertaining enough to watch but not so entertaining that I would ever feel the need to follow it every week. If I'm home and there's nothing else I want to watch, then okay. But one thing that really bothered me last night was the weird mumbly way all of the characters (at least the male ones) talked. They all sounded like George Bush with a New York accent, or maybe Peter Brady in that episode of The Brady Bunch where Peter gets obsessed with gangsters and goes around saying "Pork chops and applesauce, that's swell" in a weird mumbly voice.

I've been DVRing it but I haven't watched yet. If NBC orders more episodes I might give it a go. I'd love to see Kate Mulgrew in another role.
I'm not going to get sucked into another good show just to have it cancelled.

I really enjoy the show and like it a lot better than CSI: Miami. I love Joey. Very nice well-placed humor to lighten the mood. I look forward to watching it weekly and hope NBC doesn't pull the plug.

Count me and my sister in for being two of the 15 people watching and loving this show. I hate getting so involved though because I know NBC will kill this show just like it has countless others. I wish this show could have ended up on FX but unfortunately the creators of new shows are still going to the big three where they are getting no respect and good shows are getting the shaft. More people will watch a show if they are not pidgin holed into a must view time or you can forget it ever seeing it on a full size screen. FX reruns its show numerous times during the week so if you miss it you can catch up, lately network TV will rerun a show for weeks at a certain time and when people get used to watching it in that time slot they pull it to show something else ~cough~ GREY”S anyone~cough~, which is just BS.
