Since I began posting for TV Squad a year ago I've noticed a change in the way I watch television. Before I would just watch the show for pure enjoyment and go on my merry way. Now when I watch a program I tend to view it in anal retentive mode, even when I'm not reviewing it.
That's where I am right now with 30 Rock, but not because of the writing or the casting. Frankly, I think that it's a very funny show, and that's coming from someone who thought it didn't have a chance back when it was first announced. No, I'm being anal here because I've noticed a change in Tina Fey's look. When the show began Fey, who plays Liz Lemon on the show, looked a lot like she did when she was on Saturday Night Live. However, in the last two shows, I've noticed a change.
First, her hair is different, it's much more relaxed. And, she's dressing a little less manly now than she had in the beginning. But what really got the A.R. antennae up was that Fey is no longer wearing her glasses. I believe she had them on for half of last week's episode, but then lost them towards the end. This week she didn't have them on at all.
Like I said . . . anal retentive.
Don't get me wrong, I like the look. And, actually, I see Fey more as Liz Lemmon now then as the former anchor of SNL's Weekend Update. Perhaps that's what Tina was looking to do with the change in her looks . . . let people know that the person she was on SNL is no longer. That, or she just had lasik because she was tired of wearing glasses. Either way, I like the statement she's making (if there is one. I just needed a sentence to end this paragraph).

The earlier episodes always mentioned that Liz dressed crap and wasn't attractive enough. It always surprised me because I think Tina Fey is very attractive, and I think Tina Fey has realized that and now doesn't focus on Liz's "non-attractiveness."

Bad move.
Drew Carey got laser eye surgery and had to wear fake glasses because he knows how important they were in this look.

Isn't that the point? - she's allowing herself to chill out after working with Tracy & Jack after years of being a dowdy woman in charge.

Is this frackin' worth an article? You said yourself that last week she had glasses on for half the episode and you're using just this week as evidence? She was on a date for part of the episode and she was at an awards show for part of the episode. Both are occasions that one would either wear their contacts or go without if their vision was borderline. I just can't believe that posts like this still go up at TVSquad. Where's the entire post dedicated to John C. McGinley's haircut? Where's the post observing that a lot of shows are in reruns right now? Where's the entire post observing that 1993 on Heroes is in black and white? How about seven more posts about torture on 24? Or why doesn't Bob Sassone suddenly realize that 30 Rock is short for 30 Rockefeller? Sigh.

It's like Conan o'Brien's hair...He couldn't just change it out of the blue...he even said that a few times on the show. Anyways if Fey is changing her look on the show then I can see it...but if she is actually changing her look herself she shouldn't (I see that as being a sellout).

Am I the only one who thinks she's hot with the glasses and fairly plain without them?

And speaking of superficial articles about appearances - don't forget to write one about Donald Trump's bald head or that fat guy on LOST or Jack Bauer's receding hair line...We could be here all day reading nonsense articles that concern every TV characters changing appearance...

I agree, I always had a hard time seperating her character from SNL- I kept thinking of her as "Tina Fey" instead of "Liz Lemmon." That hasn't been a problem with the last few episodes though. I can buy into her character on 30 Rock more easily when she's not wearing the signature glasses of Tina Fey.

I read, but can't find it now, that she had lasik some time ago, and only wears the glasses because it's part of her look that people recognize her by. But supposedly she never wears when she's not on TV.

Yeah, she doesn't actually need the glasses in real life. Hasn't for some time. She's didn't even need them when she was still on Update, but she just kept wearing them on TV because it was her signature look. Poster #5 was right as well, half an episode is worth a post about her "phasing" them out? I doubt that. She was on a date. She also often takes them off in her scenes alone in her office. She's not getting rid of them, its just that this show isn't about her being on a TV show, its BEHIND the scenes. I wear black rimmed glasses, and when I'm tired or relaxing I take them off as well. Or when I playing basketball or soccer. Doesn't mean I'm not phasing them out.
All this to say...she better not freakin' get rid of 'em because I think she looks hot with them ON!

#6: I don't know that Tina Fey looks "plain" without her glasses, but it has been my observation over the years that on some women at least a nice pair of glasses makes them look hotter than they already are. Oddly enough it rarely seems to work on blondes.

What's all this hate about the content of this article?
I have a suggestion: If you come across an article that's titled, "It seems the glasses are gone for Tina Fey," and it doesn't interest you, then don't read it.
I enjoyed it. I thought it was interesting.

TomB - no one is hating on this article. We are just stating that if you are going to write about TV female character's look, there are greater stories to cover like the CONTENT of the show...

VitotheTiVo is so right.
Plus, Tina Fey is a bit of an ugly duckling. Alas, no swan in her future, glasses or no glasses.

I love when people write "Get a life" in a comment, responding to someone else's comment, in response of a blog. It makes me feel so alive.

I like Liz Lemon better with the glasses so I hope they won't disappear entirely.
I also like the way her hair is not always the same, and sometimes falls into the "bad hair day" category. She is one of us!
