In today's New York Post Cindy Adams gets the story behind the story of Leno's quiet abdication of his late night throne to Conan. While it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, Leno had no intention of retiring in 2009. The decision to hand the 11:30 reigns over to Conan was made by network executives who were interested in capturing a younger demographic. NBC could hold on to Leno, but would owe Conan a major default fee. Adams reports that ABC and Fox are both interested in scooping Leno up if NBC really does kick him to the curb in two years, which it probably will considering this move has been public for nearly three years now. Carson Daly and Jimmy Fallon have already thrown their hats into the ring for Conan's old slot. Things could get even wilder in late night if Letterman announces his retirement. (...a big "if"...) Carson retired when he was 67. Dave turns 60 in April so he's got a few more years in him, but sooner rather than later, this playing field is going to be wide open.

The execs at CBS should just pretend they want to hire Leno.
If Dave thought there was even a chance that Jay might fill his spot, he would put off his retirement forever.

Jay Leno should leave now. When he first started his monologues were actually funny, now they are just embarassing. His interviewing skills have gone from bad to worse. The funniest part of his show is the Bush impersonator, and he will be unemployed in a year.
Conan's bits are funny, good interviewer, but his monologues are tiresome.
Jimmy Kimmel seems to have it all together, he does everything well. ABC should be proactive and put Kimmel on at 11:30 soon.

Conan makes me sick to look at him, even worse is to hear his tinny voice. He's corny and nothing funny about him. I would never again watch the Late Show if he were the host. The only reason I have ever watched him is when I can't sleep and channel surfing. This has to be a bad joke that he would replace Jay Leno.

I like CBS lineup, it's great. Leno should have never had taken over the Tonight Show anyways, Letterman should have. I don't even understand this article through, for years now Leno said he was leaving the show and now he takes that back? It doesn't make sense to me.

I wonder which NBC executive held a gun to Leno's head when he announced his retirement on The Tonight Show. I also hope Leno has since fired his management team since the obviously were unable to get Leno anything better than a five-year contract.
But snarkiness aside, I never have understood the belief that the 12:30 host automatically should move up to the 11:30 show. Maybe Conan will do an excellent job, but the formats of the shows are very different and I'm not convinced. Just as I am not convinced Letterman would have been the better choice as Carson's replacement. On CBS, he got to make his show his way, instead of following a predefined format.

If Conan does take Lenos place I will be getting to sleep a lot sooner. I cannot stand him. The stupid things he does with his face and that pulling the invisable strings or whatever makes me sick. I always turn him off. I go to Jimmy Kemmel. I think he should take Leno's place should he decide to retire. I always liked Carson and Leno stepped right into that spot with professionalism and talent. Jimmy would do the same class act. Conan does not!!He would bring shame to the memory of Johnny.

Conan is awful!!!! Comes across as too gross and involved in himself rather than his audience. Poor Johnny Carson will turn in his grave. Switched over to CBS - Craig the Scot is MUCH more better.

MORE BETTER? Joyce, I'm sure the grammar gods would turn in THEIR graves if they read how public education failed you.
Conan is a great interviewer. His monologues have gotten stale, and his skits would have to be a little more mainstream, but he's more than capable, and a great asset to NBC.

Conan is far from awful. He's smart, witty and funny. People who don’t like him are probably missing the joke and prefer the predictable simplicity of Jay Leno. That's why Jay got the tonight show over Dave too – brainless comedy is more on par with the mainstream audience. Let’s hope NBC gets is rights this time and gives the viewers Conan.

mel- I like Dave over Leno for the "cerebral" reasons you mentioned, but everytime I've tried to watch Conan (had to a couple weeks ago when my brother's band was on) I just don't get it.
His interview skills are just okay, during his monologue he seemed to have this "why and I doing this crap" look on his face, and not in a funny Letterman sort of way, but in a dead serious way.
I'd love to see Craig Ferguson take over the late show for a couple of days, see how he does with a large audience, a band, and A list quests.

Bring back Kilby! With 60+ channels on basic cable, there ought to be way more late night talk shows.

I love Jay Leno. I also like Dave Letterman. Conan taking over Leno will be a nightmare in the ratings for NBC worst than it currently is with some of the programming decisions during Prime Time. I do not plan to watch Conan if he takes over. I will either switch to another host or completely turn away from Late night TV.

You guys should have seen Conan's interview with this 'bread professor'. It was truly hilarious and showed Conan at his best. I doubt it if Conan will be able to do such interviews at Leno's timeslot.
And Leno has been extremely awful. His monologues have gone from mediocre to awful. And his interviews are just painful to watch...even the interesting people become boring.
Letterman is still the king when it comes to interviews, and Ferguson is hilarious too...his monologue is great. Too bad he has to share his timeslot with Conan.

I really like Leno and I like Letterman as well. Conan? I can't stomach him. He's immature and behaves more like Pee Wee Herman than a talk show host. Leno can be a bit racey, but I love his jokes and I think he is an excellent interviewer. I love the way he has contact with people on the street and have tom foolery on his show. Letterman is very good also. If Leno wants to stay, I say let him stay. The idea that the network wants to change hosts to draw in the younger set is ridulous. There are enough baby boomers and other mature viewers who watch both Leno and Letterman. God knows there are enough shows for the "younger set" and truly ridiculous ones like FlavaFlave and stupid dating shows. Letting Leno go and taking on Conan would give the baby boomers a reason to watch CNN or flip the channel quickly. Sure Leo could use some new writers, so could Letterman, freshen up their style perhaps, Conan on the other hand would require a frontal lobotomy. Kimmel might be a good choice should a change be inevitable and there are other skilled celebrities who might take Leno's or Letterman's place. I disagree with the person who stated that the mainstream viewers are the younger set. That writer is out of touch with reality. As I stated before, the baby boomers are majority of late night viewers. Don't put some jerk in Leno's place nor Letterman for that matter. The network would be making a serious mistake.

I love Jay Leno. The tonight show is entertaining. Some of his skits are hilarious. We love headlines and the President Bush skits. He is so funny when he goes to the streets to talk to everyday people. Conan is not a replacement for Jay Leno. If he does replace him I will find another late night show to watch. Conan is NOT funny.

I hope Leno goes to another network if he retires, or he decides to continue. I like how Leno tends to keep his show cleaner than Conan. I think Leno can appeal to kids and adults...whereas Conan appeals to the 18-25 age range. I usually watch Conan after Leno simply because for some reason the St. Louis CBS channel puts Ferguson on 30 minutes later than the normal time... And I usually turn off the TV by the time Ferguson is coming on.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say, ROSIE O'DONNELL should be considered to take over Jay Leno's post, not Conan O'Brien. It would be nice to see a female personality hosting a late night show for a change.
