(S06E16) Ryan sums up the last two nights by saying "The girls ripped it up and the boys threw it down," and tells us that once again they received almost 32 million total votes. Let's just skip all the other stuff and get to it. AJ TABALDO is going home! I'm shocked. I really didn't see that coming. I would place AJ above Phil, Brandon, Jared, and definitely Sanjaya. He gave a good performance Tuesday night and received praise from all of the judges. He has a great personality to match a great voice. Yet, AJ's journey ends tonight...and Sanjaya (adorable, yet flawed) lives to sing another song.
Oh yeah, ALAINA, NICK, and LESLIE are also going home, but I'm not surprised at all. I pretty much expected that. Did I mention that I'm still in shock over AJ getting the boot?
While I'm disappointed that one of my favorites is going home, I realize that this shock is what makes American Idol so exciting and unpredictable. Unfortunately, it's also what makes Idol so frustrating. I want America to vote for MY choices. Or I want to believe that I KNOW who America will vote for (even though I have no clue).
It seems that no matter how hard we try, we can't really predict how our fellow Americans will vote. The AOL online poll got it half right, and half wrong (Sanjaya and Antonella are safe). Meanwhile, Alaina and AJ looked safe over at dialidol.com, but obviously weren't.
Randy, Simon, and Paula think maybe America got it wrong tonight. Do you agree? Or are you glad that AJ, Nick, Alaina, and Leslie are going home?
Other highlights: - Kellie Pickler shows up to sing "I Wonder," and talk about her upcoming tour with Brad Paisley. She doesn't sound nearly as ditzy as she did last year (despite the spider sushi comment). She says she spent money on new shoes, and Ryan wonders (as we all do) if there's something else she's bought lately - like maybe, er, I don't know, implants? Her voice is better than I remember, but the performance is stiff. And her hairstyle is too "old" for such a pretty, young girl.
- The contestants perform "Joy to the World" as a group, and my favorite part is when AJ sings the line "You know I love the ladies." There's been lots of speculation about AJ, and many doubt he's straight, so I find it interesting that he sings this part of the song.
- Alaina is such an emotional mess after her rejection that she can't sing her final song. I've never seen this happen before on Idol. It definitely didn't improve my final impression of her singing.
- Sundance cries a lot tonight. Really, they show him at least half a dozen times and he's always wiping tears from his eyes.
- Paula tries to give Alaina parting advice, but I think Alaina drops her microphone and the sound drops out completely so we can't hear what Paula is saying. It's not a big loss, I'm sure.
- Last week's American Idol Challenge winner is in the audience to prove that the contest is real. This week's question is ridiculously easy again. Nobody tells us what we really want to know, which is how much money they made on last week's Idol Challenge phone calls.
- Leslie and AJ both sang "Feeling Good" and both got booted. I thought it was an interesting song, but apparently it didn't sit well with America. I would cut it from the playlist for next year.
- We get the usual compilation good-bye video set to Daughtry's "Home" and darn if I don't feel a little emotional. I just become a big, mushy softy during this part of the show (sorta like Sundance, without the actual tears). I even feel bad for the contestants I wanted to leave.
- Leslie wins me over during her final few minutes, when she ad libs the end of her song, saying something like, "Why did I decide to scat? Americans don't care for Jazz."

What a raw deal that Antonella gets to stay! Check out what this recap says about Kellie Pickler. The picture alone is worth the click thru!

Ryan's comments to Kellie -- no matter how subtle -- were out of line. The guy is a major tool.

A.J. was very dignified and respectful in his remarks to Ryan at the end. I hope this year's winner can show as much class.

I watch this show because of the occasional surprises, the little joys that I didn't expect. For example Bo's acapella "In A Dream", Katherine's "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree", and now Blake's "Virtual Insanity" and Chris R's "Geek In The Pink" (a song I hadn't been familiar with before). I don't give a damn about the drama or the fashion or any of that... I just watch for the rare moments that really surprise me.
But I really, truly despise the show for the most part. For one thing it drives me crazy that the judges can't give consistent and/or constructive feedback to save their damned lives. They'll tell the singers that they can't choose songs by known artists like Christina or Whitney or Stevie because they'll always be compared to those original performers and none of the Idol wannabes are anywhere near that good. But the next week they'll criticize the singers for not taking risks and stepping out of their comfort zones. And that's just one example of the hopelessly inconsistent and pointless kind of "advice" the judges give every week.
And the second (and much, MUCH bigger) problem I have with this show is that it proves what idiotic, meat-puppet simpletons the vast majority of the American viewing/voting public really is. The very existence of websites like "Vote For The Worst" (whose sole purpose is to throw off the voting process and ruin even the vaguest semblance of a realistic result) proves that the results on this show have nothing whatsoever to do with any kind of real talent. Online asshats gather in their little virtual asshat conventions and organize voting campaigns based on ridiculous criteria like the singer's hair style, or their choice of skirts, or more often just on how "hot" the singer happens to be.
That's sad... and annoying, and frustrating, and childish. And, I suppose, totally typically American.

The Southern Hick part was the best, not because she was good but because no one liked her! Everyone was bored when she sang and no one laughed at the lame "jokes". That's great TV.

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to wonder if Ryan was thinking "implant" when he asked Pickler about what she spent money on. Funny thing is that my wife didn't even catch that. And did Pickler gain a truckload of weight or what? With the size of her butt, it's a wonder how she fit into that dress. Must have been blue shrinkwrap.
One last thing,.. AJ got screwed! (but at least he handled it well)

I noticed several of the semifinalists crying when each of the four were eliminated. We sit and watch the results on TV, but we don't think about how supportive these semifinalists are of each other's talents. How they became friends during the auditions and being on the show's set. And that's it's hard to see one of them leave. I've never seen Sundance cry that much. And Alaina, whom I didn't like neither performance, had a difficult time singing Not Ready to Make Nice. She even forgot the lyrics on the first verse! I wanted AJ to stay--I thought that Sanjaya was lousy on Tuesday's show. And Nick Pedro's problem was that he was riding on Nick Lachey's singing and image way too much. Sounding too close to him vocally. Didn't care too much about Leslie.

AJ and Leslie should demand a recount (Leslie still had another week left in her)! Neither Antonella nor Sanjay could carry a tune to save their lives. Celine Dion should press charges against Antonella for murder, to one of her songs...and Sanjay, Michael Jackson called, he wants his outfit back, what was the deal with that anyway.....

AJ sucks and good that he's gone! Sanjaya is not as bad as the judges think, they are extra hard on him for some wierd reason. Dont be sheep TVSQUAD viewers / bloggers, at least the american public has good common sense.
Picklers Pompoms are PERKY!!! i'd hit that, out of the park baby!

The voting process really needs to changed. If Votefortheworst.com has this kind of impact on the results of AI then something needs to be done to offset it. This is such an injustice to the more talented kids on there. I was so dissappointed to think that we are going to have sit through another week of Antonella and Sanjaya.
Being the country gal that I am, I was glad to see Kellie last night. I loved the song and will definitely be buying it. Not sure I like her new image though. She looked like a cross between Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton. Even though I love those two ladies I still think Kellie is too young to have that image.
Hopefully...Antonella and Sanjaya will go home next week. *Sigh*

Reposting some random thoughts, mostly because I'm still looking for an answer re Ebony Jointer (see below):
> I'm crowning Melinda as this season's A.I. winner. Though several of the women have great voices, I believe Melinda will better maintain her high level of excellence in the varied categories yet to come. Her current humility is just added charm to her great singing and it will be interesting to see how that changes several weeks from now when even she will have to start admiring her own abilities.
>Lakisha Jones is like a PGA tour professional who shoots a 61 on the first day of a tournament ... unquestionably, the lady's got game but consistency is what wins and I believe she deserves a (still admirable) second place to Melinda.
>Still waiting for someone to PLEASE explain to me what happened to Ebony Jointer, the black roller-skater waitress from the "Best of" show, who gave a dynamite performance of a Whitney Houston song, got passed on to Hollywood and was never shown again. She had the complete package of voice, looks and personality. I still don't understand why the producers showed us someone that great once and then moved on as if it never happened.
>I've been a fan for several seasons but this week was the first time I've voted. I've decided that great talent like Melinda and Lakisha should not just be left in the hands of other voters. It's like a presidential election, you can't complain about the results if you don't vote!

I honestly think we all should ignore No Tone Ella. It seems she's getting feedback from everyone's negative comments as well which makes her popular. You know when you have an annoying sibling that just tries and tries to get your attention and the longer you ignore them the more bored they get and they more likely they'll GO AWAY!!! I think this is how we should view No Tone Ella and leave it at that. We should focus on the positive aspects of OUR favorite IDOL and ignore the arrogant big headed egomaniacal witch. I was just really surprised she didn't go home last night. NO, I'm not jealous of her photos. I could care less about that. I just really think this girl can not sing whatsoever. It's sad to me that this is a Singing competition when better singers go home. YES, I do think that Leslie's a much better singer than No Tone Ella I just think America, like for Bush, voted wrong.

BULLSHIT is what it is!!!! Antonella is such a lousy singer and her poor me act is keeping her on the show.Truly with all my heart believe she was behind this the whole time...I would never let my children listen to a single thing that ever came out of her mouth.I think she showed everyone her true colors with the nasty looks she gave when randy and Simon gave their thoughts to her performance to.Melinda is the winner as far as I am concerned......in every way. That is a real role model for our children

Oh yeah and if antonella makes it through another week....I AM DONE with that show..sights like "vote for the worst.com are not thinking of the really talented people who could lose out because of you. Some of these singers arent just thinking about the "title" but are just doing what they love and singing from their hearts. You actually see the love of music in them(like Melinda,Lakisha,Sabrina, and chris)all I see in Antonella is a snotty little BRAT that gives attitude and wants to throw temper tantrums when she doesnt like what she heres...MONEY is the only thing I think she cares about...besides publicity that is..Starting to think the judges should still be voting!!!!

To comment #4: Ryan was joking! And she's too ditzy to even catch on. But we love her (and him) anyway. No harm, no foul.
It was def. a shock that AJ left over Sanjaya (even though I love Sanjaya)...AJ was def. top 6 material.
Leslie has such a funny personality. Too bad she can't sing that great, either. As far as Antonella staying? Blech. I'm sure she'll get voted off next week along with that dark haired girl no one can remember. Hopefully Vote for the Worst won't win again next week.

After seeing Pickler perform, I have to wonder why the others got the boot (remember Jennifer Hudson). These people will probably make it anyway if they remain motivated. Simon hates everybody anyway.
