Dirt: This Is Not Your Father's Hostage Situation

Courteney Cox(S01E09) Hmm... not sure how I feel about this episode. It didn't really relate to anything else. Actually, it felt like the type of episode you'd normally see as a ratings stunt. Only problem is that it wasn't all that tense and when something shocking (I say that loosely) did finally happen, it felt forced. Almost as if it got added in because... well, I don't know. It was added for the sake of being added it seemed. If you saw the episode, then you definitely know what I'm talking about. We'll get to that later though.

Centered around a former child star who took Lucy and the DirtNow offices hostage, the episode looked at the "forgotten celebrity." That's kind of an interesting phenomenon if you think about it because they're all over the place and I suppose every now and then, some of them flip out a little. This, however, seemed a little over the top.

So let's talk about Sammy Winter, our former child star in question. He used to be on some 80's sitcom and has since been pushed aside by Hollywood. First off, I think it would have been way cooler if they had gotten an actual former child star to play an eccentric version of himself rather than making up the character of Sammy. He was just ridiculous.

Then there's Kenny, Lucy's assistant. He's been around all season, usually as a bit of comic relief. This episode went out of its way to finally endear Kenny to the audience and then what happens? Out of nowhere, Sammy shoots him in the head. What purpose does this serve? Talk about pointless! If you're going to shoot him, why bother adding to the character at all? If you ask me, it would have been far more shocking if Sammy just went off and shot 3 or 4 people who had never even been given a name.

By far though, the best two parts of the episode were how the relationships developed between Holt/Julia and Brent/Willa. First off, I love the power dynamic between Willa and Brent. She thinks she's got the upper hand. He'll do anything for her... anything. All I'll say is "butt-plug." However, Brent really has all the power since he has that sex tape and can blindside Willa with it at any moment. It's just a really well laid out dynamic and it took Maria, the cleaning lady, to put the two of them in their place.

As far as Holt and Julia go, they're heading in the logical direction. Since Holt was glued to the TV news for the duration of the hostage situation, Julia finally suspects that he's got someone else on his mind. Eventually she'll figure out the story behind Kira's death. My next guess? Lucy gets wind of it, for whatever reason this pisses her off, and the Julia/Johnny Gage sex tape gets leaked. This has all the makings of getting quite messy.
