Fresh off his Supporting Actor Oscar win for Little Miss Sunshine, Alan Arkin has been cast in the new movie version of Get Smart, which Adam first mentioned last fall. Arkin has been signed to play the Chief of CONTROL, the spy agency for which Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 work. The Chief was played by Edward Platt in the classic TV version of the show, and having the grouchy Arkin play the role of Max's exasperated boss seems like a good fit.If you didn't know already, Steve Carell is going to take the role of Max, which was originated by Don Adams, and Anne Hathaway will play Agent 99, played by Barbara Feldon in the original series. Hm... I have no problems with Carell playing Max, but isn't Hathaway a bit young for the role of 99? The great thing about Feldon was that she was a sexy, strong, mature woman who took care of herself and got Max out of trouble. I've never seen anything where Hathaway was either sexy, strong or mature. Anyway, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Terence Stamp have also been cast in the movie.

I think it's all perfectly cast actually. I'm so excited! Wish they'd just start filming already.

When I saw the headline for this, I immediately thought of Arkin for the Admiral, but I can see him as Ed Platt's replacement.
William Schallert, whom TV Land once called the hardest working man in Television, is still going at it, so maybe he should reprise his role as the Admiral. He's certainly at a more appropriate age to play it now (although it is a physical role, what with all the falling down).
I agree about Ann Hathaway. The role should be an equal to that of Max in all aspects, including age. But whoever heard of the male leads in movies playing opposite women of their own age? (Doesn't Harrison Ford have something to that effect in his contracts? LOL)

I just checked IMDb.com, and they list The Rock for the role of "Agent 23" but no character yet for Terence Stamp.
I would have cast The Rock as Hymie the Robot (maybe "Agent 23" is a way to keep that factoid hidden for awhile), and Stamp as Siegfried.
And for a great cameo, Peter Dinklage or Warwick Davis as Mr. Big of KAOS!

Wow. Anne Hathaway sure does seem sexy to me. Did you see Devil Wears Prada? Are you that picky?

I'll agree about Anne Hathaway as far as the age thing (although there is such a thing as makeup), but she was pretty sexy topless in "Brokeback Mountain". Maybe Joel was watching the boys and didn't notice? She also aged pretty realistically; although someone said Lureen proved the adage, "Texas women don't get older, they just get bigger and blonder hair".

Why do you have to go there, BC? I haven't seen Brokeback, but I'm sure Anne was sexy as hell in it. But "Anne Hathaway sexy" and "Barbara Feldon in 1965 sexy" are two completely different things.

I loved Barbara Feldon as Agent 99, but I think Anne Hathaway will be excellent in the part. In fact, she's one of the reasons I'll see the movie. Definitely not the only reason, or even a big reason, but I think she's sexy as hell and it's not 1965 any more.

I apologize if this shows up twice, but it didn't get there the first time using a password, so here's my second attempt:
